When Hannibal crossed the Alps to attack the Romans at Cannae, the Roman
equivalent of Homeland Security was caught completely unprepared. Even
though the Carthaginians had lost many of their North African troops,
almost all of their elephants, and many of their mules and horses, and
though Hannibal himself had lost an eye, the invading troops still managed
to send the Romans fleeing back to Rome — those that weren’t killed or
captured, at any rate.

But alas, poor Hannibal had his failings.

“Vincere scis, Hannibal, victoria uti nescis,” said his cavalry commander.
(“You know how to win, Hannibal, but you don’t know how to profit from the
victory.”)

Instead of gathering his forces and marching straight to Rome, Hannibal
dithered, negotiating, while Rome regrouped and raised new armies.
Eventually, their time came. The Punic invaders were put to rout.Carthage
was razed… and the land around the city salted and made infertile
forever. Rome went on to dominate the entire Mediterranean for another 700
years.

Hannibal’s mistake was a common one. The Confederacy made a similar error
when it failed to follow up its victory at Bull Run in 1861 with a massive
attack on Washington. It might have dictated the terms of an armistice;
instead, it waited for a negotiation that never came. Then, Gen. Robert E.
Lee made the mistake that sealed the fate of the Southern cause. He said
he thought his soldiers were “invincible” and sent them up Cemetery Ridge
to attack the Union forces, even though it had long been obvious that a
frontal charge across open space was a losing proposition.

“Remember the stone wall,” Stonewall Jackson used to say, referring to the
stone wall at Chancellorsville, where, in 1863, he learned the critical
lesson that a fortified position is almost impossible to take by direct
attack. In almost every battle of the War Between the States, it was the
defenders who were the winners. There was a very simple reason: Rifles had
become more accurate at longer range than they used to be. So important
was the lesson and so obvious were the consequences of disregarding it
that Gen. Longstreet dared to differ with his legendary commander. Only a
fool would attack up that hill, he warned Lee. Longstreet was right. The
Southerners who charged under Gen. Pickett might have been tough, but they
proved that they were still vincible.

Robert E. Lee may have been a legend, but as Gettysburg shows, there is
something about camp life that turns even the best men into blockheads. We
say that, mind you, in admiration, not contempt. After all, the world
needs good soldiers who don’t think too much, and a really good soldier
would rather die than think. Often he does.

The last thing you want in the enlisted mess is philosophers. They are
liable to begin asking questions. Imagine the reaction of a Russell, or a
Wittgenstein, or a Camus, had they been in the Wehrmacht in 1942 when the
German army advanced on Moscow:

“We’re going to march across the biggest land mass on Earth.we’re going to
fight the biggest army on Earth.we’re going to freeze our butts off in the
coldest, least hospitable place on the planet, across the widest front
line in history.with the Soviet Army in front and partisan guerrillas at
our rear.and we’re going to do this without enough fuel or supplies.led by
a bunch of fanatics, who are at least delirious, and probably criminally
insane…” Right.

No, you don’t want thinkers with guns in their hands. But at the top of
the chain of command, thinking might not be such a bad thing…if only it
were done right. But it never is. Put a man on a public stage and he gets
an almost irresistible urge to make a spectacle of himself. He thinks. Or
thinks he thinks. But his thoughts get all tangled up with his
amour-propre. The next thing you know, he is doing something, but
something so absurd that even the theater mice are tittering at him.

In contrast, a man in his own private life need not think too much. He can
get by on instinct and tradition…making his idle mistakes and suffering
its petty consequences. Then, after he is in the grave, people may
remember him for his kind remarks or the wart on his nose.or they may
not…and life goes on just as well without him.

Not so the public man. Seduced by the stage on which he struts, he
imagines he is a thinker…and an actor…on whom the planet depends. All
public spectacles begin with this delusion, segue into farce, and conclude
with a flourish in disaster.

And nowhere are those disasters in sharper focus than in military affairs,
where every vainglorious dimwit — from P.Q. Varus to George Armstrong
Custer — has left behind him a charred trail of corpses and burned-out
war chariots.

There was, for another instance, Lord Cardigan, who having bought his
commission in the British Army, was moored in the Black Sea enjoying life
aboard his private yacht — attended by a French chef — while his
soldiers shivered, starved, and died in misery in the Crimean War. Called
to action and never having seen the terrain, he took his light brigade of
cavalry on a mad dash in the wrong direction down into the “valley of
Death.” A thinking cavalryman might have pulled the plug on that
operation. Apparently, there were none. Instead, they all rode to their
deaths — except, of course, Lord Cardigan, who returned home to England a
national hero.

Then, there’s the Italian ace, Italo Balbo, who was given the command of
Italy’s forces in Libya in 1940. He flew to take charge.and was shot down
by his own troops.

A British general, whose name we don’t recall, thought it rather unmanly
to duck. Touring the trenches in WWI, his lieutenants urged him to put his
head down. No, said he, if we all go crouching around all the time, we’ll
never be able to fight the war, let alone win it. He had just finished his
sentence when a German marksman shot him in the head.

Of course, some commanders are simply mad. Confederate Gen. Richard S.
Ewell, who had a bald head and a beaked nose, believed he was a bird.
Reports circulated that he pecked at his food and made noises as if he
were chirping. The Prussian field marshal Leberecht von Blucher tiptoed
around his room, claiming the French had heated the floor. He also
believed that he had been raped by a French soldier and was pregnant with
an elephant.

But most military commanders the gods destroy without bothering to make
mad. We turn back to Publius Quinctilius Varus and Rome’s great defeat at
the hands of the Germans.

Varus’s father was a high-ranking Roman, holding the post of quaestor,
but, apparently, not a smart one. After the assassination of Caesar,
Sextus Varus chose to back the wrong side in the civil war that ensued,
aligning himself with Brutus and Cassius, Ceasar’s murderers. At the
Battle of Philippi in 42 B.C., Varus’s team was thrashed. It was Roman
tradition that the leaders of the losing squad committed suicide. Varus
turned to his slave and asked the man to kill him with his own sword. We
don’t know whether the servant was delighted or appalled. All we know is
that he did what was asked of him and Varus disappeared from history.

His son, P.Q., married carefully — that is to say, in a way that brought
him to Emperor Augustus’s notice. In fact, he married twice, each time
bringing himself a little closer to the imperial household. Given the
governorship of Syria, he came to it as a poor man to a rich province. He
left it as a rich man leaving a poor one. Longing for more glory, he saw
his opportunity east of the Rhine River, where the Germans had not quite
been brought into the Empire.

In the Romans’ view, the Germans were a wild, unruly, and uncivilized
group of tribes. When they weren’t getting drunk and fighting with each
other, they were just getting drunk. They were regarded much in the way as
Iraqis today are seen by senior American military leaders — as
incompetent and disorganized. The Romans, on the other hand, were well
organized, but their contempt for the barbarians.and their general
arrogance toward all subject peoples.made them prey to error.

Varus’s first mistake was that he trusted the young leader of the Cherusci
tribe, Arminius, who spoke Latin and had ambitions of his own. Arminius
told him of the Chauci — a tribe to the east of his own Cherusci, far
from the Roman fortresses along the Rhine. Varus couldn’t resist the
opportunity for glory. He gathered three legions together — along with
several cohorts of Germanic auxiliary troops — to put down the
rebellion.

His second mistake was not listening to Arminius’s own uncle, who warned
him of the trap.

And his third mistake was to take his troops through a narrow defile where
they could be easily ambushed.

Varus was probably riding along happily, imagining the triumphal march he
would make through Rome when he returned, when he first heard the
“baritus.” It was a sort of war cry, made by the Germans before a battle,
a kind of low moan produced by roaring in a deep voice against their own
shields.

It began at Kalkriese, near today’s Osnabruck, and is called the Battle of
the Teutoburg Forest. Varus was so confident that he had brought with him
a whole caravan of women, children, and supplies. The army was stretched
out along a narrow road through the forest. To make matters worse, it
rained. Roman archers found that their bows were almost useless. Foot
soldiers could not form up properly. All their training, tactics, and
careful administration were of no use.

Arminius had managed to bring together the Cherusci, Marsi, Chatti, and
Bructeri — all the local tribes — and set them on the Romans. They may
have been no match for the Romans on open ground.but here in the forest,
they were having a picnic. They wiped out the baggage train first. Women
and children were killed or taken as slaves. Then, they went to work on
the Roman soldiers. Soon, the auxiliaries not only deserted, but went over
to the enemy.

For several days, the legions held together — out of discipline and
desperation. They even managed to build impromptu fortifications. But they
had no way out. When it was clear their situation was hopeless, Varus must
have followed family tradition. He probably buried his sword in the ground
and fell upon it. The Germans picked him out among the dead, cut off his
head.and sent it to Rome. Arminius was later defeated by Roman forces sent
to get even, but Germany was never subdued.and never part of the Empire.

The High Price of Israel’s Hubris

If the country’s military hadn’t rejected a U.S. offer to supply it with “bunker buster” bombs four years ago, it might not be having as tough a time against Hizballah – or being criticized for its handling of the war

In 2002, the Pentagon offered to supply Israel with “bunker-buster” bombs, capable of punching deep into the enemy’s underground defenses. Israel’s air force chief at the time, Lt. Gen. Dan Halutz, — who, as Chief of Staff, is currently commanding Israel’s air, sea and land strikes in Lebanon — rejected Washington’s offer, claiming that Israel had its own superb weapons. But with the “bunker-busters”, says a senior Tel Aviv intelligence source, Israel could have knocked out most of Hizballah’s rocket-launchers and possibly brought the war to an early close.

Instead, as the war drags into a fifth week, Hizballah is still pounding Israel’s northern cities with over 150 rockets a day. Though Israeli intelligence determined early on exactly where most of those rockets were being fired from — launchers hidden in 38 underground bunkers, burrowed 6 yards down on rocky hilltops across southern Lebanon — Halutz’s vaunted Israeli-made “air fuel” bombs have failed to destroy them. So last month, a top intelligence source told TIME, Israel put in an urgent request for precision-guided, 5,000 lb “bunker-buster” bombs. The Bush Administration complied, but it will take several weeks for the bombs to be fitted onto Israeli jets; Israel has also requested an urgent delivery of short-range rockets armed with cluster bombs from the U.S., according to the New York Times. But by the time any of this advanced arsenal arrives, a United Nations cease-fire will probably be imposed banning Israeli air strikes. “If we’d had the bunker-busters in the first few days,” laments this senior intelligence officer, “We’d be in an entirely different situation today against Hizballah.”

Today’s ‘situation’ is not one that agrees with most Israelis. Promised a swift, knock-out punch against Hizballah’s Islamic militiamen, Israelis are now being told that in order to neutralize Hizballah — forget about destroying them — they must brace for a bloody ground attack in Lebanon that could cost hundreds of soldiers’ lives. Increasingly, Israelis are asking: how could a militia force of only 4,000 fighters withstand a prolonged beating by the mightiest army in the Middle East — and still keep pelting Israeli cities with rockets?

If a U.N.-sponsored cease-fire goes into effect — and diplomats suggested Friday that they were close to a truce deal backed by a 15,000 strong international force — the after-shock of the Lebanon war is expected to shake-up the top echelons of the Israeli military, and it may even threaten Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s coalition government. Israelis overwhelmingly supported Olmert’s initial decision to strike hard against Hizballah. But the latest opinion polls by Yediot Ahronot newspaper show a drop in the public’s confidence with Olmert, his war cabinet and with the generals.

That confidence nose-dived earlier this week after Olmert and his ministers began quarrelling furiously over the course of the war. A once decisive prime minister was looking dithery. A major ground offensive was twice postponed by Olmert, though there were reports Friday that Olmert had finally decided to go forward with the operation. The Israeli press reported scalding rows between Olmert and his foreign minister — who pressed for a diplomatic solution when Olmert was pondering an all-out attack — and between Olmert and the defense minister and his army generals, who wanted to land a major blow against Hizballah on Thursday when the prime minister was stricken with doubts over such a risky move. At the same time Halutz sidelined his northern commander, responsible for the day-to-day running of the ground war. Ma’ariv newspaper columnist Ben Caspit fumed: ” This campaign was conducted negligently, hesitantly, indecisively. When we needed to attack, we waited. When we should have waited, we attacked. ”

As Chief of Staff, Haltuz may end up taking most of the blame. A no-nonsense fighter pilot who was the favorite of former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon — to the extent that some insiders say Sharon was grooming Halutz, not Olmert, to replace him some day as prime minister — Halutz, 58, at first impressed Israelis with his Top Gun swagger and aviator glasses. Once asked how it felt to drop a bomb on people, he replied: ” I feel a light bump to the plane as a result of the bomb’s release. A second later and it’s gone, and that’s all. That is what I feel. ”

Waving aside the offer of American-made “bunker-busters” is only one example of Halutz’s famous hubris. In a remark that will surely haunt him during the inevitable rash of post-war inquiries, Halutz said on July 14th, “In this day and age, with all the technology we have, there is no reason to start sending ground troops in.” A month later, he was ready to order in thousands of troops as the only way to defeat Hizballlah. Granted, Haltuz made the comment after his air force managed to destroy most of Hizballah’s arsenal of long-range missiles, capable of reaching Tel Aviv, in the opening salvos of the conflict. Back then, it seemed only a matter of days, or hours, before an Israeli smart-bomb would find its way to the lair of Hizballah chief Hassan Nasrallah. That possibility now seems a longshot.

With tanks revving their engines and over 20,000 troops already inside Lebanon, Olmert has had good reason to be cautious about an expanded ground invasion. As of Friday, the war has cost 124 Israeli lives, 84 of them soldiers. The 1982 Lebanon war bogged Israeli forces down in Lebanon for 18 years and was a disaster. Olmert was told that a major thrust 14 miles north to the Litani river and beyond, as envisioned by Halutz and the other generals, could drag on for another six weeks and leave hundreds of Israeli soldiers dead. Worst of all, the generals told Olmert that they could only guarantee taking out “70%” of Hizballah’s rocket capacity. A cease-fire suddenly started looking good. On Thursday Olmert had decided to wait several days for a U.N. resolution, despite his generals’ urgings to roll the tanks, but a day later he seemed to have changed his mind once again.

Once the cease-fire starts, both sides will surely claim victory. Nasrallah will declare himself a new champion of the Arab world for having survived the Israeli onslaught and terrorized 1.5 million Israelis with his blindly flung rockets. (In Palestine’s West Bank, recordings of his speeches and ballads of Hizballah warriors are hot sellers.) The Israelis can argue they pushed back Hizballah from the border, killed hundreds of their fighters and replaced enemy militiamen along the border with regular Lebanese army troops and tough international forces. Israel may even be able to exchange its own Lebanese and Palestinian prisoners for two captive Israeli soldiers.( A third soldier was kidnapped by Palestinians militants Hamas, and a senior Hamas official told TIME that his release will depend on what Hizballah decides to do with its two Israeli hostages.) But many Israelis are worried that if they stop fighting now, they will have lost a weapon far more valuable than any “bunker-buster” — the Israeli army’s aura of invincibility. And for that loss in this Lebanese war, more than any other casualty, Olmert and his top generals may pay dearly.

“Belgian Nationalist Leader to Seek Asylum in Russia”

“The leader of Belgium’s far-right National Front said he was considering
seeking political asylum in Russia, the AFP news agency reports.

On Tuesday the Belgian appeals court also ordered Daniel Feret, the
61-year-old leader of Belgium’s French-speaking far-right party, to do 250
hours of community service helping foreigners integrate into Belgian
society.

Feret said in a statement he would, when he attends a conference in Russia on Monday “discuss conditions for obtaining political exile in Russia” which he described as “a democratic country in which freedom of expression still has meaning.”

Feret will be in Moscow for an international congress of nationalist
political parties hosted by firebrand Russian nationalist politician
Vladimir Zhirinovsky.

Feret faces 10 months in prison if he does not accept the ruling.

The court found Feret and associate Georges-Pierre Tonnelier guilty of
publishing pamphlets and electoral manifestoes which equated immigrants with criminals.

One of the pamphlets caricatured Africans as savages and another, published after the September 11 2001 terror attacks in the United States, equated Muslims with terrorists.

The court ruled that the pamphlets broke a 1981 law against xenophobic acts and remarks because they “encouraged hatred against foreigners” and constituted “grave attacks on democratic values”.”

Hi Alex,

I just heard on Stormfront about what has happened to VNN, I thought at
first that maybe the site was being updated and was down for that reason but then I heard about it being shut down and that you are/could be in trouble for something you said on goyfire! Personally I listened to goyfire because we have nothing like it over here in England and you simply cant say ANYTHING without being accused of being a hater, nazi, racist etc etc. So much so, that really when I think of americans having a constitution i also, at the same time, think how lucky you are to have it.

This concept is extremely important and should be stressed over and over again. You can hammer it home by giving specific examples from nearly any hymiewood production. In fact, you should start a Loxism in Hollywood or Loxism in the Movies entry at Sunlit Heights with examples from particular films along with description of the scenes, thus cataloging this kosher hatred of the white man. I’ll be more than happy to provide write ups regarding this issue. Most white men subconsciously sense this but are unable to put their finger on it. By pointing this out with specific examples, they will see the light and be able to spot it on their own in the future.

Lawyer says slain teen, friends were out to get suspect’s son in racial incident; teen’s dad denies it

Two families reeled Friday in the wake of a deadly dispute between teenage boys that ended with the shooting death of Daniel Cicciaro, 17, in a quiet Miller Place neighborhood.

As Cicciaro’s family prepared to bury him, they rejected claims by suspect John White’s lawyers, who said Cicciaro and four friends yelled racial epithets at White’s son, Aaron, while seeking a violent confrontation.

Aaron, 19, and John White, 53, are black, while Cicciaro and his friends were white and Hispanic.

“He wasn’t raised that way. Some of our best friends are African-American,” said his father, who is also named Daniel Cicciaro.

“That’s pathetic if they even go in that direction. Nobody used anything racial, and these kids are top-notch kids.”

The shooting happened after two carloads of boys, including Cicciaro, arrived at 11 p.m. Wednesday at the Whites’ Independence Way home.

The enraged boys had called to say they were coming, and were met on the driveway by John White, carrying a handgun, and Aaron White with a shotgun, Suffolk police said.

While arguing outside the house, Cicciaro, of Port Jefferson Station, was felled with one shot to the face on the edge of the driveway, police said.

The dispute had started earlier the same night when Aaron White was ejected from a Sound Beach party for threatening to rape and beat a girl who was there, police said.

Cicciaro and the other boys were trying to protect the woman from Aaron White’s threatened assault, Daniel Cicciaro said.

Meanwhile Friday, White’s family sought to make sense of how a diligent and caring father with no criminal background was caught up in a feud that landed him in jail charged with murder, said his lawyer, Daniel Driscoll of Bay Shore.

White’s family Friday declined to comment.

“This guy is as legitimate and straight as you can imagine,” Driscoll said. “He’s not only law-abiding, he’s lived an exemplary life. Twenty-five years on the same job [at a Brooklyn asphalt company]. Two kids in college. A nice home in a nice neighborhood.”

John and Aaron White feared for their lives as they awaited the arrival of carloads of enraged boys, Driscoll said.

“They were using the N-word, threatening him. They said, ‘We’re going to get there in 10 minutes.’ John White had all this in mind” as he waited at home for the boys to arrive, Driscoll said.

“Two carloads of people came to the house and blocked off the street. They were not there just to talk. They told him they were there to injure his son, though the exact language they used was stronger.”

Daniel Cicciaro, however, said his son was drawn into an ambush.

In a cell phone conversation with his son, Aaron White deliberately gave his home address to the boys who wanted to fight him, and told them they could “finish” the dispute if they came to the Miller Place house, Daniel Cicciaro said.

“My son was lured through cell phone conversations,” he said.

A wake for Daniel Cicciaro is planned for Sunday and Monday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. at the Casimir Funeral Home in Port Jefferson Station, with a funeral Tuesday.
