Famous Cases:
Pablo Varela, bookseller, was convicted of Holocaust denial and incitement to racial hatred
(in his writings), at the behest of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, SOS-Racismo Espana, two
Jewish communities, and the Spanish Liberal Jewish Movement. He was sentenced to five years
in prison and fined 720,000 pesetas, or about $5,000. His bookstore stock -- over 20,000
volumes and hundreds of tapes is to be destroyed by fire. (It had already been subject to
firebombings and its workers to physical assualts.) The Jews at the Simon Wiesenthal Center
also are trying to get Varela's history doctorate revoked.
