Freedom Of Speech, R.I.P.

Freedom of speech is dying an excruciating death. Watching it die is difficult enough, but knowing that, somehow, by my silence, I am complicit in the death, is unbearable. One thing is certain. I cannot stand by and do nothing. I cannot stand by and watch our freedoms die. I cannot stand by in tacit silence, while what's left of our freedom wriggles and squirms and gasps for air. There has got to be a mass resuscitation. There has got to be a way to breathe life back into our Bill of Rights. We are careening down a slippery slope into a disaster, the magnitude of which nobody has ever witnessed. You know I am right, don't you? You can feel it too, can't you?

How is this happening and when did it first begin? When did the first amendment wind up under the boot of fascism? When did "politically correct" become synonymous with censorship? When did the label "hate crime" become our new censoring device? When did "critic" become synonymous with "terrorist?" When did the ruling elite remove the word "free" from "free speech?"

1. Could you please introduce yourself to our readers? Please tell us something about your activities in Russia.

First of all, I would like to thank you, Mr. von Hoffmeister, for organizing this interview. Let us glorify the gods of our race. Let them protect our meeting. What can I shortly tell you about myself? My complete name is Pavel Vladimirovich Tulaev. I was born in Krasnodar (southern Russia) in 1959, and I was educated in Moscow. Now I am well known as a publisher (editor-in-chief) of THE ATHENAEUM, a Russian New Right international review. My personal life was not straight and easy. I lived in various countries and cities: Vienna, Sochi, Canberra, Seville, Utica. I started my career as a linguist and a poet. Then I made a doctorate in History and wrote some theses about Russia, Europe, Latin America and the USA. I have more than 100 publications in different languages and styles. The very important books are: "Understanding the Russian World," "Russia and Spain" (published only in part), "Veneti: Ancestors of Slavs" and four volumes by Anthony Sutton, the famous American conspirologist. 2. You are a Russian nationalist and a pan-Europeanist. In your opinion, how do these two seemingly divergent views correlate?

I used to be a Russian nationalist when we were fighting against the stupidities of the Communist regime. I always admired the great Russian history and culture. In 1993, I was invited to the USA to give lectures on Russian civilization. But now I understand clearly that any nationalism is not enough for our renaissance. Very often extreme nationalists of neighboring countries become opponents and even enemies. So we need to be more open and responsible for the White world as a whole organism. That's why I participate in the pan-European movement as vice-president of SYNERGIES EUROPEENES and as a member of the Slavic Committee in Russia. Everyone should care about his fatherland first and then about his race.

3. What do you think the prospects for German-Russian relations are at the moment?

Right now they are good and pretty close. President Putin, who speaks German fluently, meets often with Chancellor Schroeder to resolve bilateral problems. But one day these leaders will leave, and who can guarantee that the current course will be adhered to? Our peoples were always in contact throughout history - good or bad - and have a lot of common interests nowadays. Germany occupies old Slavic lands in the East. Russian culture, especially philosophy, was strongly influenced by German thinkers, such as Hegel, Nietzsche and Heidegger. The socialist movement had started in Germany (before Russia), though the leaders of the Third Reich learned from the experience of the USSR. After the victory in 1945 and a long period of Soviet occupation in the GDR, our government let your people reunite Germany. Please realize that it was a good gesture, a big gift and a political compromise. In the same way Germans should understand that modern Russia has become a divided nation. The very heart of the old Rus state has broken into three big pieces now: Great Russia, White Russia and the Ukraine (its historical name was Rus or Little Russia). If Germany wants to have a strategic partner in the East, it must leave the aggressive NATO alliance and support a friendly Russia. 4. I have heard that you are Buyan. Is it a Pagan name? What does it mean? What meaning can Paganism have in the modern White world?

Yes, my Pagan name is Buyan. It is the name of the legendary Russian mystical island, the sacred place of magic forces, like Ultima Thule for Germans. I received this important name through my initiation into the Pagan circle. Now it has become an official Heathen confession. We call it Rodnaya Vera (Native Faith). When I write some esoteric, neo-archaic or spiritual texts, I always use this name. Many of my close friends do the same. For example, my wife's Pagan name is Zoreslava. It means "Glory to the Dawn." We work and fight together for a Traditionalist and New Right alternative to the modern degeneration. We carefully study the ancient pre-Christian world, make Heathen reconstructions of rituals and festivals, publish Pagan books, magazines, newspapers and websites. You may call it Aryan or White Revolution, but please always stress the positive aspects of our movement. Do not repeat the dramatic mistakes of the 20th century. And let's start with ourselves. Let's be wise, educated and strong. Leave the ignorance to the fools. Let's be responsible for our nations, our race and common heritage.

5. What is your vision of the future of the White world?

This future is not optimistic. The modern world, in spite of its technological achievements, is going to hell. By the way, this term is an old Pagan one: Hades - in Greek, Ad - in Russian, Inferno - in Latin and Italian. It means the mortal sphere of the outside world. Our White race is infected by liberal ideals and capitalist standards. It is degenerating and degrading. Switch on the TV, look through the internet, listen to the pop music. What do you see? Stupid shows and non-stop advertising for millions of passive spectators. Transnational business needs you only as a consumer. You must pay, buy and cry of happiness! You are in a golden cell (prison) and under sweet occupation. The so-called Third World is following old religious traditions and is growing. The White world is making money and having fun. And it is dying. State-provoked terrorism will not resolve the problems. We need another way. We want White Revolution. An absolutely new alternative to this vampirism. We want genetic raising, cultural reveille and political organization. Our dream is an alliance of White nations, maybe a military block, maybe an international pact or even a confederation. Not at once, not in one day, but in a real and pragmatic way. Of course I know that there exists a strong global opposition to this honey hell. There are different forms of organized and leaderless resistance. We are a proper part of this world "reconquista." Our fight is our way of life. This is our way to be free, honest and proud. This is our way to Valhalla, to our native gods and ancestors, that we call Iriy and other people - paradise.

THREE children face being taken into care after their parents were jailed for stirring up racial hatred. Jeremy and Jacqueline Oakley both posted messages on a far Right wing website. A judge jailed them, despite a plea by a barrister to spare Mrs Oakley for the sake of their three children, two aged 14 and one 15.

The couple - who have previous convictions - live on Thorn Avenue in Thornhill, Dewsbury. They have recently split up and now live next door to one another. They pleaded guilty at Leeds Crown Court yesterday to stirring up racial hatred by publishing material on a website run by the far Right White Nationalist Party.

Jeremy Oakley, 41, used the pseudonym Blitzkrieg 88 and his wife, 34, the pseudonym English Rose to post the messages. Sentencing Oakley to 18 months' imprisonment and his wife to nine months Judge Ian Dobkin said: "I'm punishing you for what you did, not what you think. "The offence is the way you expressed your opinions on the internet. "When these opinions leave the privacy of you and your home and are propagated elsewhere, the evil this kind of offence could lead to becomes more real as time goes on. There is very strong public disquiet about such conduct and opinions." [Judges will go to any length to deny what they're doing. If the couple had agreed with jew Noel Ignatiev that the white race should be abolished, no notice would have been taken.]

Mrs Oakley's barrister, Richard Clews, said the couple had been together for 18 years and she had fallen under her husband's influence. He said that since the couple split up in May - with Oakley moving into the house next door - his client Oakley had made new friends.

He said the prosecution's case was that Mrs Oakley had posted one message on the website. He added: "It was a personal comment, not an exultation to others or a rallying cry. "It was deep in the website, in a chatroom where it was unlikely anyone abhorring such views would have been. "She needs education and rehabilitation, rather than punishment, and is ashamed of what she did. "There is no-one who can look after her children and if she loses her liberty they will have to be taken into care."

Judge Dobkin sentenced Jeremy Oakley first and he was taken to the cells before his wife was sentenced. She stood staring in the dock after the judge passed sentence, as if she did not take in she was going to jail. She then started to cry and said: "What about my kids? There's no-one to look after them. What are my kids going to do?" In the end she had to be led away by a dock officer. Mrs Oakley has previous convictions for threatening behaviour, possessing an offensive weapon and public order offences.

Barrister Michael Smith, for Jeremy Oakley, who has previous convictions for violence and criminal damage, said his client had posted the offensive message on the website after a night's drinking. "There is no suggestion that this led to any acts of violence or disorder," said Mr Smith. "He no longer has any connection with any extreme Right-wing group." Oakley had escaped a jail term last September after admitting sending a malicious text message to an undercover journalist who had exposed the activities of the BNP in Yorkshire in a BBC TV documentary called Secret Agent.

Oakley was given a two-year community rehabilitation order and had to pay £100 compensation to his victim after pleading guilty to sending an electronic communication with intent to cause distress. The message read: "Watch your mail you scum. Boom. From C18." C18 referred to Combat 18, an extreme far Right organisation.

Magistrates gave him a non-custodial sentence because of his remorse and guilty plea. Yesterday, prosecuting barrister Nicholas Lumley said Jacqueline Oakley had been organiser of the women's division for the White Nationalist Party.

He said police seized far Right leaflets and documents from the couple's house. He added that Oakley had been involved in violent far Right group Combat 18 in the 1990s and had been involved in street fights.

Free Land in the Heartland Draws Newcomers

By CALVIN WOODWARD ELLSWORTH, Kan. (AP) - Here in the heartland, the prairie homesteading tradition lives again. Land - that coveted, crowded, pricey possession in America's hot spots - can be had these days for nothing in a growing number of Great Plains communities. Sagging populations prompted economic planners to offer juicy incentives inspired by the land giveaways to settlers in the mid- to late 1800s. And so, in the middle of Kansas, Maribel Juarez has rediscovered the town of her El Salvadoran childhood.

In Ellsworth, just as in El Salvador's Atiquizaya in the old days, church bells chime. Freight trains clatter and whistle day and night. Everyone knows everyone else - and their business - and there's no fighting with traffic. "I found a place exactly like my hometown and it's in America," Juarez says with a broad smile. "To us, this is our promised land. We don't need anything else."

Lured by an offer of free property, Juarez, 44, and her husband, Madecadel, 46, came to Kansas from Vallejo, Calif., two months ago. They went from an apartment where they feared letting their daughter out on her bicycle to a nearly new home with a big lawn, oak floors and a sense of utter safety. More than a dozen communities in Kansas and Nebraska are giving away land or planning to do so as a way to staunch population declines and boost local economies.

Ellsworth's giveaway has had an impact, but not the one its creators expected. Anita Hoffhines, the economic development director who is the spark of the program, pictured newcomers snapping up the free lots and building their dream homes.

Instead, all the outsiders who have come to size up the properties, in many cases reserving them, ended up buying existing homes they saw when they tooled around town. So far, 18 families in two years have settled here that way and taken advantage of the second big incentive Ellsworth County offers - a down-payment grant of up to $3,000 for families with children.

The county gets a tangible benefit from its investment, beyond the boost of having more people around to shop. Each child who enters a local school attracts $6,000 a year in state aid. The 25 kids who have enrolled from the new families bring $150,000 annually to the education system, enough to pay for several teachers.

Hoffhines is the first to say places like Ellsworth are not for everyone. The one grocery store has a modest selection and uncompetitive prices. Fancy clothes are not to be found. "I drive 40 miles to get fresh salmon," she said. "If I want sushi, I'm not going to find it here."

One of the most common questions she gets from prospective settlers is where the nearest Wal-Mart is located. "Some people are just addicted to Wal-Mart," she said. They drive 50 minutes to Salina to get their fix, or make do with mail order or Internet shopping.

Apart from the Pizza Hut and Dairy Queen, this one-stoplight town is untouched by the big shopping and restaurant chains. People can choose between two dentists, two law firms and two old-time independent drug stores across the main street from each other. Stores close early, and there's nothing much happening on a Sunday.

On the other hand, Ellsworth offers some brick streets, a cappuccino bar in one of the antique stores, a nine-hole golf course, recreation center, a new medical center, a 24-hour gas station and convenience store, and an outdoor swimming pool with a slide. The county treasurer's office, which used to close for lunch, stays open now, thanks to a campaign pledge by the previous occupant of the office to end the noon break. In fact, life in general here "is pretty much in the open," says Hoffhines. "You can't hide," she said. "If you come to give to the community, you will be received. If you come to take, you won't."

The town now has 10 free lots available, each about one-third of an acre, and four more elsewhere in the county. Local families are eligible for the free lots, and two have built on them, but the down-payment aid is for newcomers only. Amy Eck, 31, came from Phillipsburg 130 miles away to take a job as managing editor of the local weekly, the Ellsworth County Independent. She and her husband realized it would take too long to build a new home on a free lot and it would be an iffy investment anyway.

"It just wasn't worth it," she said. But her son qualified the family for the down-payment grant, and she liked the community. "When I send my son to school, he doesn't have to enter a metal detector." Families get $1,500 for the first child and $750 each for others, to a $3,000 maximum.

Ellsworth's land program comes with strings to discourage indigents and substandard housing. Applicants must qualify for a mortgage, build a house of at least 1,000 square feet, pour a foundation, have a building contract within six months, break ground in a year, move in within two years and meet other conditions. That program brought the Juarezes to Kansas, but it was the place that ultimately sold them.

Madecadel Juarez, a hotel maintenance worker in California, lucked into a job in Ellsworth as a civil engineer, the profession he'd trained for before coming to the United States. He works a mile away and comes home for lunch, which he couldn't do in Vallejo. In a few months, the family switched from a city of 120,000 people to one of fewer than 3,000. Hispanics make up 16 percent of Vallejo's population, less than 4 percent of Ellsworth's. But Maribel felt no culture shock. "So peaceful," she said. "We just feel at home."

The remarks came only a couple of minutes after he said that the feud between the two that became public last weekend in Florida was a "dead issue."

"The problem is, he doesn't know how to deal with African-American people," Bradley said. "I think that's what's causing everything. It's a pattern of things that have been said -- things said off the cuff that I don't interpret as funny. It may be funny to him, but it's not funny to Milton Bradley. But I don't take offense to that because we all joke about race in here. Race is an issue with everything we do in here.

"Me being an African-American is the most important thing to me -- more important than baseball," said the 27-year-old center fielder, whose voice never went beyond his normal speaking level. "White people never want to see race -- with anything. But there's race involved in baseball. That's why there's less than 9% African-American representation in the game. I'm one of the few African-Americans that starts here."

Ed. Note: Kent got into it years ago with Barry Bonds, the steroid homerun king. Milton Bradley is the classic nigger: if he didn't have millions, he'd be in jail for shooting somebody. As OJ showed, even the millions aren't necessarily enough.

NCAA Will Let Florida State Use 'Seminoles'

The NCAA will allow Florida State to use its Seminoles nickname in postseason play, removing the school from a list of colleges with American Indian nicknames that were restricted by an NCAA decision earlier this month.

The NCAA said it was recognizing the relationship Florida State has long enjoyed with the Seminole Tribe of Florida, which assists the university with its pageantry and celebration of its culture and supports the school's use of its name.

"The staff review committee noted the unique relationship between the university and the Seminole Tribe of Florida as a significant factor," NCAA senior vice president Bernard Franklin said in a statement released Tuesday. "The decision of a namesake sovereign tribe, regarding when and how its name and imagery can be used, must be respected even when others may not agree."

Florida State president T.K. Wetherell had threatened to sue the NCAA immediately after its Aug. 5 announcement that the school's highly visible nickname, "Seminoles," was defined as "hostile and abusive" by a committee.

While many people this month are focused on the controversy surrounding the 40th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, I have another civil-rights-related 40th anniversary on my mind. On Aug. 11, 1965, the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles broke out in flames on the nation's television screens. Many cherish the memory as the moment when the militant became mainstream in a "fed-up" black America, replacing the nonviolent, gradualist efforts of old-guard civil rights leaders. The Watts riot indeed shaped modern black American history more decisively than the Voting Rights Act. The question is whether it was in a good way.

In comparison with the polite sleeve-tugging and forms of nonviolent protest typical of the earlier civil rights generation, the sea change in 1965 may seem at first glance to have been an overdue response to the injustice that black America had endured for so long. But after researching the riot and the policies established in its aftermath, I have come to a different conclusion. In teaching poor blacks that picturesque battle poses were an "authentic" substitute for constructive intentions, the "Burn, Baby, Burn" ethos ultimately did more harm than good to a people who had already been through more than enough.

Rocks Thrown at Border Patrol Chopper

YUMA, Ariz.

Illegal immigrants threw rocks at a Border Patrol helicopter, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing when one of the rocks damaged the rotor, the agency said. Neither the pilot nor the Border Patrol observer was injured. The A-Star helicopter was two miles west of the U.S. Port of Entry in Andrade, Calif., on Tuesday when a group of immigrants began throwing rocks at the aircraft. One baseball-sized rock gashed the rotor, forcing the pilot to land nearby, said Michael Gramley, spokesman for the Border Patrol sector based in Yuma, Ariz.

Gramley said he did not know how high the helicopter was hovering when it was struck, but he said it was being repaired and is expected back in service soon. After the incident, 17 people were apprehended for illegally crossing the border, and two of them were being investigated for smuggling. Ten immigrants evaded capture. The investigation into the rock-throwing was continuing.

A lawyer who helped launch major Holocaust litigation in the mid-1990s, has been hit with sanctions that will run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars for his handling of a lawsuit seeking recovery from an Austrian bank of the value of artwork looted by the Nazis.

Employing unusually harsh language, Southern District of New York Judge Shirley Wohl Kram assessed attorney fees against the lawyer, Edward D. Fagan, and also fined him $5,000, finding he had committed champerty and misled her.

It seems that, intentionally or not, or with a clear political motivation or not, that the governors of New Mexico and Arizona may have started the executive equivalent of "the wave".

Now, as we wait to see if Arnold, who governs the state most re-conquered, will join his western counterparts, there are Republicans in Virginia who are urging their governor to stand up and signal to the White House that they need emergency funds to help to cope with the hordes of illegals the Commonwealth is forced to take in.

Who among us wouldn't love to be a fly on the wall of the Oval Office today? [ Don't you always wonder what they say to each other when they don't use the evasive and nonsensical talking points that they spew to us irritating citizens?]

One [ this one] can only hope that more states declare their own invasion/colonization emergency - and soon.

It is far better a reaction that waving the white flag of surrender, as is the President.

The image of all fifty states declaring a state of emergency seems poetic justice for the President and the rest of the illegal alien lobby that hopes we will lean back, drink our Kool-Aid and simply adapt to occupation and chaos.

That Richardson and others on the far left expect us to accept their declarations of emergency because of Bush's intentionally un-secured borders as a signal that we need to implement an amnesty , pronto, may be the most hilarious and obvious mistake of the entire staged event so far.

Recanting the War

The neocons can't keep their troops in line

After a week or so of being backed into a corner by a mom with a few questions, George W. Bush is coming out fighting, we are told, with a new campaign to popularize the war. In a speech given on Monday to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, however, it seemed more like he was coming out flailing. Once again, we were told "Iraq is a central front in the war on terror," but the absurdity of this statement was only compounded by the widespread realization on the part of his audience that Iraq had nothing to do with al-Qaeda - before the war, that is. In the next breath, Bush took pains to remind us that the invasion and occupation of Iraq embedded terrorists where they weren't before:

"Terrorists like bin Laden and his ally, Zarqawi, are trying to turn Iraq into what Afghanistan was under the Taliban, a place where women are beaten, religious and ethnic minorities are executed, and terrorists have sanctuary to plot attacks against free people. Terrorists are trying to block the rise of democracy in Iraq, because they know a free Iraq will deal a decisive blow to their strategy to achieve absolute power. The Iraqi people lived for three decades under an absolute dictatorship, and they will not allow a new set of would-be tyrants to take control of their future."

Women being beaten? Maybe the president really doesn't know about this. Or this. That the rest of us do, however, only underscores how utterly removed from reality he is. It doesn't matter that he's venturing out into the heartland to make the case for war to the American people, because he never gets out of that bubble he's encased in - the one that doesn't permit him to see that women in Shi'ite Iraq are going to be worse off (in a narrowly legal sense, at any rate) - than they were under the Ba'athists. Religious and ethnic minorities aren't doing too well in the "new" Iraq, either: you don't want to be a Turkmen or an Arab in Kurdish Iraq, and in Basra, secularists, Christians, and Zoroastrians are having a tough time of it.

The complete ineffectuality of the president's strategy is recognized not only by his opponents, but by his friends - or, rather, those who were his friends, at least until rumors of a winding down of American involvement began to sweep Washington, and the neocons began to find themselves being politely but firmly shown the door. Now, suddenly, the former White House speechwriter is among his most acerbic critics:

"By now it should be clear that President Bush's words on the subject of Iraq have ceased connecting with the American public. His speech yesterday to the Veterans of Foreign Wars is the latest - and one of the most serious to date - manifestations of the problem. The polls tell us that the American public is losing heart. A substantial majority (56%) now say that the war is going either 'very badly' or 'moderately badly.' More than 50% now regard the war as a mistake. One-third want an immediate and total withdrawal. Maybe most fatefully: a plurality now say that they believe that the president deliberately misled the country into war."

And whose fault is that? Not the neocons' - of which Frum is the exemplar and chief enforcer - who plumbed [.pdf] for this war years prior to 9/11, and wrote the administration's talking points in the run-up to the invasion. Instead of taking any of the blame, Frum passes off responsibility solely to the president, who just isn't doing as good a job communicating as he ought to. But never fear. The author of the president's infamous "axis of evil" speech has a few suggestions:

"The president could have made news yesterday by itemizing the reasons to regard Iraq more positively than most journalists do. He could have ticked off some of the achievements daily posted on the centcom.mil site. (Here's the latest.) He could have teased details even out of the mainstream media. (Mickey Kaus the other day noted that the reliably dour Robin Wright of the Washington Post casually mentioned in the course of her latest down-beater that Iraq has gone on a car-buying boom that has put a million new cars on the road since liberation. Kaus: 'A "car-buying boom" - another shocking failure! Don't they know about global warming?')"

Is Frum saying the president ought to take on Mickey Kaus as a speechwriter? I'm not sure injecting a Kausian note of snarkiness is going to help sell this war. Nor will regaling Americans with stories of how the American military in Iraq helped a young Iraqi boy have surgery to repair the hole in his heart. Juxtaposed against the backdrop of Iraqi children as "collateral damage," with holes in their hearts inflicted not by disease but by stray American bullets, what's communicated is a doubly disturbing and oddly mixed message: an image of American soldiers as angels of mercy and dealers of death. As for the heartening news that some Iraqis are going on a car-buying spree, I wouldn't advertise that too insistently. After all, they're doing it with our money. Announcing that Ahmed Chalabi and his friends are all getting a brand-new Mercedes courtesy of the American taxpayers isn't going to thrill anyone outside the hallowed halls of the American Enterprise Institute and the editorial offices of National Review.

Heathen Traditions of the Pennsylvania Dutch Still Strong

The word "Dutch" refers to "Deutsch" (German), not the Netherlands, and the Pennsylvania Dutch originate in southwestern Germany. Their language, Pennsylvania Dutch (Pennsilfaani-Deitsch) is still spoken by up to a quarter million people, mainly in and around Lancaster County.

While the folk magic of the Pennsylvania Dutch is today seen mainly as a set of cultural folk customs, scholars have been able to trace much of the content to pre-Christian times. Pennsylvania folk magic is a syncretic Christo-pagan belief system expressed through the beautiful hex-signs seen on barns and in homes, and as a series of folksy aphorisms, folk tales and superstitions passed down orally from generation to generation. It is also syncretic in the sense that its practitioners do not consider it to be a religion, and are usually church-going Christians. But the men and women who practice the wisdom would have been considered witches at one point in European and even American history.

The "bible" of the Pennsylvania Dutch folk magic system is the book Pow-Wows, a compiled by John George Hoffman in 1820. Despite the name, this folk magic has nothing to do with American Indian religion. The symbolism, formulae and history of the customs are uniquely Germanic, and distinct from the Celtic-derived folk magic of much of the South.

One of the best-known products of the Pennsylvania folk magic system are the hex-signs, roundels brightly painted to ward against evil and bring good fortune. (Although many people associate the hex-signs with the better-known Amish and Mennonites, these "plain people" are generally puritanical and eschew folk magic.) Researchers have shown that the hex signs conceal protective runic charms and display colors and mythical shapes and fauna directly descended from Germanic heathenism. Recently there has been a from Whites outside of the Pennsylvania Dutch community proper to study and practice this Germanic form of White American folk magic and to appreciate a living aspect of our collective folk soul.

-- The Pennsylvania Dutch farmers created their own American brand of magic with their hex signs.

-- The use of graphic signs and incantation is similar to rune magic.

-- The incantations or spells are taken from grimoires or magic manuals.

-- A written blessing is called a "Himmelsbrief".

-- The hex sign is circular and divided into three zones: core self, inner world, outer world.

-- Geometrical shapes have different meanings: e.g. threefold pattern = spirituality.

-- Symbols used in hex signs include earth star (good things, harmony), tulip (faith, loyalty), heart, golden finch (good luck), eagle (strength and courage), oak leaf (masculinity), acorns (male sexuality), rain drops (nourishment), pomegranates (fertility), lightning bolt (breaking loose), grapes (female fertility), clover (sweetness).

-- Colors all have meanings: white = purity, innocence, red = love, vitality, freedom; black = death, lust; blue = spiritual strength; violet = dignity, power; yellow = divine love.

There are as many opinions about Edred Thorsson as there are readers of his books, and there are plenty of those. Rather than take up space in the reading list proper presenting these diverse and often conflicting viewpoints, I thought it best to banish the debate to it's own page.

There is no doubt that Edred Thorsson is one of the most prolific and widely-read authors on the subject of the runes. Thorsson is one of the few authors you will find listed in both the academic and mystical sections of this bibliography - his academic books are written under his real name, Stephen E. Flowers. Many academics seem unaware of this fact, condemning him under one name and citing him under the other. His academic credentials are considerable (he holds a Ph.D.), and his facts are generally accurate. It's his theories and opinions that tend to both inspire and infuriate.

My own personal opinion (for what it's worth) is that Thorsson's work is too heavily influenced by Eastern philosophies, ceremonial magic and the Armanan magicians (note that I have removed the offending 'N' word) to be of much use to anyone trying to reconstruct the ancient Norse Pagan traditions. I sincerely doubt that the Norse ever perceived their World-tree as a Qaballistic Tree of Life-type schematic, or conducted rituals resembling the Lesser Pentagram Banishing ritual to the extent that Thorsson's 'Hammer Rite' does.

ENVIRONMENTAL MUSINGS

Alex Linder penned a rather curious spintro on VNN's main page the other day. In it he took a direct hit at environmentalists and made some assertions contrary to the beliefs of mainstream White Nationalism. He writes:

Let's clear some rubbish: the earth is not alive; the things on the gassy rockball do not live in harmony; those who make these claims are interested in damaging you to obtain bizarre or impossible ends. Struggle and flux are the rules of this world, and harmony means a dead sabre-tooth tiger, a wolf domesticated into dog, a nigger dangling from a tree. "Live in harmony with nature," screams the crank. "Dominate nature, to the extent we can, and arrange it according to our priorities," says the sensible man. David Foreman, founder of Earth First!: "Phasing out the human race will solve every problem on earth, social and environmental." Has Foreman initiated the process in his own case? Why, no. The earth needs consultants, you see. To interpret to the broader world its creakings and drippings. The truth of the matter is that the earth is a stinkball, and god is about to hook us and set off to catch one of the giant catfish that lurk at the far end of the universe. Environmentalism is just another platform for morons to browbeat and moralize against the reasonable. However, the arguments of the god-stuf't are weak themselves. They love to site some Petafied mind about humans and slugs, whatz the diff? Like a hump-nosed kike citing Sheehan and WN saying the same thing, the godly think to cite is to refute. The problem is that there is no basis for saying that humans are more important than slugs. The argument is correct. I prefer humans prevail, but there is no natural basis to pretend whatever gave rise to all this gives a fig.

Now I am by no means a "tree hugger" and I recognize as much as Alex that environmentalists often go to extremes in their misplaced zealotry. Often they defeat their own purposes, such as happened with a devastating forest fire we had in our nearby mountains a few years ago. Due to a wilderness act passed a year or two before, a vast area of the National Forest land was made inaccessible to vehicles and thus firefighters were prevented from entering. As a result, the fire caused much more damage over a much wider area than it otherwise would - due to this "environmental" legislation.

No, nature is not always perfect, but there is a certain ecological harmony and balance which man can interfere with only at his peril. Such phenomena as the Oklahoma dust bowl of the 1930s and the more recent increase in global warming (Yes it is real. The only "scientists" disputing its occurrence are on the payrolls of large corporations.) attest to harmful effects man can have on the environment. And, yes, overpopulation is perhaps the biggest cause of pollution and other environmental problems.

Yes, I think there are too many people on this planet. The current figure is somewhere around six billion and on a course to rise to nine billion before the end of this century. This would be disastrous.. Obviously, 90% or more of these people are non-White, a figure which will only increase due to the disparity in birthrates. Prior to the 20th Century, the third world populations of Africa and Asia were kept in check by disease. With the introduction of Western medicine, the nigger and shitskin populations exploded to the point where they now threaten White man's very existence. This is, of course, another example of misplaced Christian altruism. Now I know the last thing Alex wants is more niggers on the planet, but that is exactly the implication when he says "I prefer humans prevail." If White humans are to prevail, I believe it is imperative that we do try to drastically reduce the human population.

It is also a quality of life issue. I have a friend who was born before WWII and he remembers Southern California when there were orange groves and rancheros instead of the wall-to-wall freeways and crowded housing developments we see today. The air was also clean then, without the perpetual smog which now envelops the Los Angeles basin. Yes, man is capable of creating beauty, as in the cathedrals of Europe and the likes of the Taj Mahal, but more often in his attempt to "dominate nature" he creates a dehumanifying ugliness.

White Nationalists from Teddy Roosevelt to David Duke (and countless others in between such as Adolf Hitler) have recognized our need to protect and (if need be) restore our natural environment. While I realize the excesses promulgated by such extreme left wing groups as PETA and Earth First, we must for the sake of our souls strive to protect our natural world.

Hung Jury in Baltimore Mexican Child Murders

The jury deliberating the verdict of a 25 day long trial concerning two Mexican undocumented immigrants accused of decapitating three child relatives is hung and unable to reach a verdict. The families of the accused, Policarpio Espinoza, 23, and Adan Canela, 18, as well as the parents of the murdered children have maintained that the accused are innocent and that the horrific murders were anti-Mexican hate crimes.

Timothy M. Dixon, a former Baltimore police lieutenant and now an attorney defending Policarpio Espinoza, accused detectives of the Baltimore Police Department of "manufacturing" evidence in order to "frame" the two Mexican defendants in his closing statement. Anti-immigrant hysteria and especially against Mexicans has contributed to why Policarpio and Adan, neither who is able to speak the English language, were arrested for the crimes.

Late this morning a jury consisting of 12 Afro-Americans, four men and women, told Baltimore Judge Thomas Ward that they are hopelessly divided and can not reach a verdict. Judge Ward ordered the jury to continue trying. If the inability to reach a verdict persists, a mistrial may be declared by the court. In that case it would be at the discretion of the prosecution to re-try or drop the case.

California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has created a task force with teeth to resume enforcement of California tax and labor law against businesses that employ workers -- nearly all of them aliens, most of them illegal -- at unlawful pay and conditions.

Schwarzenegger's new Economic and Employment Enforcement Coalition will conduct 100 workplace raids this week, and, while they will not be able to enforce federal immigration laws, will directly target the business interests largely responsible for the federal government's indifference to illegal immigration. Victoria Bradshaw and Jose Millan, who led vigorous labor law enforcement against businesses that profited from immigrant labor a decade ago under Governor Pete Wilson, will lead the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency, a key part of the coalition; the enforcement efforts of officials like Bradshaw and Millan were largely stymied under Wilson's successor Gray Davis, who, as leftist journalist Robert Scheer notes, served the interests of big business as well as liberal Democrats.

Schwarzenegger says that the EEEO's goal is to "shut down the underground" economy. Whether that is possible or not, regardless of the underfunded project's shortcomings (including its disregard of workers' immigration status), striking the illegal alien problem at its root is imperative, and after years of neglect, the Schwarzenegger initiative is good news.

White People Discovered in Michigan: Professor Organizes Emergency Workshop

The Grand Rapids Press reports that, according to 2000 Census data, of the 4,013 people living in the city of Lowell, Michigan, 97.5 percent are White. Worse, of the 5,219 people living in nearby Lowell Township, 98 percent are White.

As if that weren't bad enough, 96 percent of the students and 99 percent of the teachers are also White!

The report made no mention of student achievement scores in Lowell but it's safe to assume that without the benefits Diversity brings to education, White students are probably struggling to master the basic skills such as English and mathematics.

The report also failed to mention crime statistics in Lowell, but again, without the benefits that Diversity brings to a community...

What's the Government doing to help?

Well not very much, apparently. So far there are no reports of Hmong tribes being airlifted to Lowell. Nor Somalis. Not even a single Mestizo caravan in sight to help out. It would seem the Government has abandoned Lowell to deal with its Whiteness all by itself.

So what can Lowell do about this White Blight and its sure to follow "racism"?

"Plenty", says John Lee, director of Michigan State University's multiethnic counseling center, who spoke to about two dozen community leaders who gathered at a five hour diversity workshop titled, "The Role of White People in Combating Racism."

"White people can combat racism by confronting it," Lee said, "by refusing to revert to stereotyping and challenging others when they do." He said they can also recognize and work to change institutional policies and procedures that segregate races, such as in education, health, real estate and laws.

"Children of other races should see more teachers who aren't white and all children should be given the opportunity to interact with others from diverse ethnic backgrounds," he said.

The Grand Rapids Press also reported that Lowell teachers and staff were to attend a similar presentation - "We want to prepare our students for the broader world and help them understand and appreciate diversity," Superintendent Shari Miller said.

Translation: they want to "cure our children of Whiteness" and prepare them to work as serfs on the Global Corporate Plantation.

Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see how reading scores improve and crime statistics plummet as Lowell slowly but surely cures its Whiteness problem.

Mama used to laugh a lot about Grandma finding the robe and hood of my Grandfather tucked away in a trunk in the attic. I still remember the, almost annual, retelling of the discovery and how they had always wondered about the lynchings that had taken place back in those days. It seemed like Grandpa was always gone on those nights, but until Grandma found the evidence, she swore she didn't have a clue.

Everyone I knew was racist in the 1950's. Segregation wasn't questioned, it just was. It wasn't questioned, that is, until some of the politicians started pushing to end it. But by the time the Sixties rolled around, I was questioning a lot of things. Somehow, the story of a Grandfather, who I never knew, donning a sheet and doling out horrible terrors and death to innocent people just didn't seem very funny to me. Somehow, I just wasn't sure that I shared the same values as my family. Somehow, I just felt that it was wrong.

The times were turbulent and chaotic but there was a certain exhilaration in that chaos. The excitement of change was in the very air that you breathed. It was contagious. It was a great time to be young and a great time to be alive.

Coming from racist beginnings, there are many incidents during my youth and as a young woman that served to formulate my view of the world and of humankind. The discussions around our dinner table, however, pale in comparison to the three plus years that I spent living with those in the American Nazi Party and various other groups, and the two years after that I spent hiding from them. And while that experience shaped much of what I finally became, holding the bludgeoned and dying body of a seventeen-year-old mixed race boy in my arms as he drew his last breath, determined my anti-racist activities for what would be my eternity.

Writing articles, joining demonstrations, tracking the actions of hate groups, and standing firm in the face of racism, bigotry, and hate has been an integral part of my life for a very long time but with the popularity of the internet, it has been my passion since first going online in 1998. During the first year, most of everything that I did took the form of research and documenting.

In 1998, I had done a little research into Ben Klassen's Church of the Creator but had not put a lot of emphasis on it as it appeared to be pretty quirky and cult-like. Yet, I was concerned about the number of young skinheads who seemed to be attracted to it and the violence that the members had already displayed. Toward the end of that year, however, the group flew into my radar once more as I had heard about Matthew Hale, the young leader of the, now renamed, World Church of the Creator passing the Illinois Bar Exam and his application for a license being initially refused.

That was a pretty active time for the racist right. Stormfront was in full force and growing, the National Alliance appeared almost invincible, and some of the other groups seemed to be picking up in membership numbers. The internet was turning into a haven for haters and they were running amok with their new-found technology. I had put together a little discussion group on MSN called "Citizens Against Hate," and we were constantly plagued by net-Nazi's posting their racist rhetoric on our boards. During all of this, I acquired a partner in Roh Larin who was to become one of my very dearest of friends. We were shut down twice by MSN, only to rebuild. After the third rebuilding of that group, Roh decided it was time to move our group to the World Wide Web and to question the practices of MSN which seemed to create a safe haven for racists. We were very successful in cleaning up the groups on MSN and within a year we were becoming quite popular on the internet.

In July of 1999, Matt Hale lost his appeal for a law license and Benjamin Smith, an adherent of the World Church of the Creator, went on a shooting spree taking the lives of two and wounding nine others. We were all stunned and outraged. But the real outrage came when Matthew Hale mourned the loss of a "white man," and showed no emotion or remorse over the victims Smith left behind. I knew within my heart of hearts that Matthew Hale was somehow responsible for the actions of Benjamin Smith, either directly or indirectly. I also knew that I would not rest until Matthew Hale was neutralized.

I began researching everything I could find about the beginnings of this "religion" of hate and of Matt Hale. I followed his every move and his every word. Prior to rallies or speaking engagements Citizens Against Hate sent out information sheets to local authorities, civic leaders, and the press along with suggestions on how to combat the message of hate that Matt Hale was bringing to their communities. As Matt Hale stood on the steps of the State Capitol in Topeka, Kansas and addressed the Governor's decision to declare that day "Embrace Diversity Day" it was evident that we were making an impact on Hale.

I began to build a database of "Creators." Through clues and information that they would post on various message boards and through emails, and private conversations, I started to put names, locations, and even faces with the various screen names. When something was said that bordered on the illegal, I would turn the information over to law-enforcement. I was committed to preventing another act of violence from the rank and file of this insidious group.

In the Fall of 2002, I met Tony Willow. Tony lived in East Peoria and had been following Matthew Hale and his local activities for quite some time. And Tony was tenacious. Together, we were able to capture the true essence of Matt Hale and his Creators. We forged an alliance and vowed to see the World Church of the Creator put to rest.

I had already devoted a large section of Citizens Against Hate to the WCOTC, something that gave Matt Hale and his followers a great deal of angst. With Tony Willow on board we managed to infiltrate the online groups and chat rooms that were frequented by Creators. Using various personas, Tony and I managed to harvest information and to thwart several incidents of violence. Using a variety of screen names and pseudonyms, Tony and I not only gathered inside information, but were able to interview those in the highest echelon of the organization as well as Matt Hale, himself. But, most importantly, we were able to keep Matthew Hale in our sights.

When the Trademark case, which was the catalyst for Hale's future incarceration, began to go badly, we knew that it was just a matter of time before Hale or his followers would react and we doubled our efforts. And others came forth to help. That help came in the form of former and current WCOTC members, law-enforcement officials from every level, and other anti-racist activists around the country.

Soon Hale was arrested, and we could exhale...once. Even with Matt Hale behind bars, we knew it wasn't over. There was still the trial and after that the sentencing. His followers were still there and, unfortunately, there were still acts of violence which continue to this day.

Knowing that there are those who say that one person cannot make a difference, I must disagree. One person can do many things in this fight against the malevolent evil that is proffered by people like Matt Hale. Soon, that one person will meet another and together they will become doubly effective and their efforts will draw others into the fold. There are far too many groups of people out there who believe as Matt Hale and who intend to further their agenda of hate by any means necessary. If no one stands up, they will someday succeed.

Being that I lived in the same town as Matthew Hale and his so called "church" I was subjected to the non-stop media coverage of the Benjamin Smith shooting spree in July of 1999. I was horrified, I had no idea that I lived not 5 minutes away from this hate monger. So much for him being "famous" in East Peoria right? This was the very first time I had ever heard about Hale or his "church." Back then, I wish I hadn't. Not because I regret what I'm doing now, but because that is what everyone does, they stick their head in the sand and brush it under the rug for someone else to clean up later. I had every intention of standing up to Hale by attending the rally march to his home, but I didn't. I had applied to hatewatch.com to monitor them online but was never contacted by them and I never followed up. Well folks, that doesn't work anymore.

My wake up call came on September 11, 2001 even though I didn't know to what degree until later. I, like millions of others, sat and cried watching the events unfold before us on television. How? How can people hate so much? What did the people in the two towers, Pentagon, and the four planes ever personally do to them? What did they gain from carrying out those acts of sheer insanity? Those questions may never be fully answered, but they should still be asked.

Now the events of 9-11 left a lot of people wanting to do something. But what? What could we do? We could donate to the victims families, hold candle light vigils and the like, but what does that really do? Well, for starters it helps the healing process for ourselves, and starts the forgetting process as well. This is something that needs to be changed. You just can't throw money at a problem or burn a candle or two then walk away and wait until something else happens then repeat the process. What needs to be done is to stand up to this hate, confront it head on and don't EVER back down. This is exactly what I did in June of 2002.

While searching the attorney's section in the yellow pages a name jumped out at me. Matthew Hale. I sat back in my chair and thought to myself, "Didn't that Smith guy go on a shooting spree because Hale didn't get a license to practice law?" I mulled that around in my mind for a few weeks and finally decided that I needed to find out. Well, you guessed it, no license. Now this is not rocket science folks, anyone in their right mind would question the legality of him listing himself as an attorney. But who do I ask? Enter the internet. Since you have to be a member of the bar association to practice law I decided to check out their website. I never really did find the exact information I was seeking but I did find the email address for the ARDC. (Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission) So off went my question to which they replied.

"In Illinois, a person who falsely represents him or herself to be an attorney has committed a criminal offense. Such matters are under the jurisdiction of County State's Attorney's Offices."

Just as I had suspected, you can't.

This was a pivotal moment for me. What should I do? What can I do? What do I HAVE to do? My inaction in 1999 came to the surface, I should have done something then but didn't. This was a mistake I was bound to correct. Little did I realize how involved I would become. Little did I realize the direction my life was about to take.

Being the mother of four children (you read that right, guys), I never dreamed that I would be delving undercover, speaking to federal agents, and working with an anti-racist organization to bring the most notorious and reprehensible racist in America to justice. But, that is precisely where all of this led.

At first I just watched them from a distance on the internet, but the more I read, the more outraged I became. When my complaints went un-answered via the local States Attorney's Office regarding Hale listing himself as an attorney I decided right then and there that I'd had enough and something needed to be done. Hale's announcement that he was running for city Commissioner just drove the importance home with me. I would bet 95% of the people in East Peoria have not one clue as to the content of their now defunct website. Did they know how they praised the murder of Daniel Pearl, the journalist who was beheaded in Pakistan? Doubtful.

The first time I saw a "Vote Hale" sign, well, lets just say it signed sealed and delivered Matthew Hale's fate in dealing with me.

I continued monitoring their website and the more I read, the more concerned I became. How is it that people can threaten others online and there be no consequence? What were the laws regarding this? I had not a clue. So in an attempt to get a better understanding of the legal process I enrolled in a paralegal training program which has become invaluable. I'm no expert, or an attorney like Hale STILL claims to be, but I now know the laws a little better and the research skills I learned played an important role in the writing of this book.

Since I was new to the anti-racist community, hell I didn't even view myself as an anti-racist at the time, I just considered myself as being a concerned citizen. I went seeking others who shared the same core beliefs, and find them I did. But one group stood out from the rest. Citizens Against Hate. They were at the time barking up the same tree as I was. Matthew Hale. I had found my place.

With Nicole Nichols' experience and guidance, I delved even deeper in their online world of hate. I registered with several forum message boards under the assumed name Casey Pratt but most of the racist world knows me by my screen name Katbat. I built a profile for Katbat complete with a made-up life and family. I got to know her well, and entered their realm as a fabricated racist and was a welcomed and soon trusted member of their world. How trusted? You will not believe it. Yep guys, you've been hoodwinked, snookered, and had the wool pulled over your eyes for YEARS!! Yes I am retiring Katbat, she did her job well. She played along, gave a few a shoulder to cry on, gave advice, all the while documenting everything. Every step, every post, every lie. But I warn those out there who might think that I'm done. I've only begun. Who am I now? Time will tell.

I will say this, they picked the wrong gals to mess with. They're now dealing with "the undercover mothers" of the anti-racist world. We are the ones in the crowd who you least suspect as an anti-racist. We're the ones who found it so easy to hide right under your noses. Were the ones who attended court hearings, trials and rallies undetected even though you were sitting or standing right next to us. We don't wear bandanas, shave our heads or have body piercings. We don't shout obscenities or engage in physical confrontations. We are simply, two little women, dedicated to making this world a better place to live.

I wish to give credit where credit is due. I would not have been able to do what I do without Nicole, she has been the rock I have leaned on in times of grief and glee. Her advice has been invaluable and I'm glad we finally, after almost 3 years of conversing online, have met in person. That meeting will forever live on in the writing of this book. Our shared belief that nobody should have to fear being different, being of another race, or of just being in the wrong place at the wrong time and have to be victimized by the likes of Matthew Hale and his racist teachings. We stand as one person in stating to the world "enough is enough."

Terrorism is often of the domestic variety. And it is the domestic variety that will destroy us from within. Those who advocate overthrow of our government and violence against others simply because of their race, ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation are a malignancy, an aberration of all those who are good and decent. And like with any cancer, the treatment must be invasive and aggressive.

The fight is not over. There are still those who must be tracked and watched and reported. There are new groups and new individuals who promise to spawn another Matt Hale. And there is still the team of Nicole Nichols and Tony Willow who refuse to allow them to get even a toehold in this world of ours. As they continue to hide behind their mantra of "Free Speech," we will take "Free Press" into their world and expose their very souls or lack thereof.

But apparently there was no objection to this grossly inflated number before 1989 from Holohoaxers. What statistical principles allowed them to neatly separate spurious Polish deaths from authentic Jewish ones? With a wave of the hand and a puff of smoke, Jews keep altering that story as needed...

Hitchens Backs Down

Just to remind you, before you read his letter to CounterPunch, here's what I wrote about Christopher Hitchens in my CounterPunch Diary last weekend.

You can tell in five-minutes channel surfing how Cindy Sheehan frightens the pro-war crowd. One bereaved mom from Vacaville, camped outside Bush's home in Crawford, reproaching the vacationing President for sending her son to a pointless death in Iraq has got the hellhounds of the right barking in venomous unison.

Christopher Hitchens attacked Cindy Sheehan, of course. Called her a LaRouchie! Why? No reason given. He obviously reckons "LaRouchie" is one of those let-her-deny-it slurs, like "anti-Semite". Let's suppose Hitchens was writing in similarly nasty terms about Hitchens. He'd probably remember that in 1999 Edward Jay Epstein publicly recalled a dinner in the Royalton Hotel in New York where Epstein said Hitchens had doubted the Holocaust was quite what it's cracked up to be. In Epstein's memory Hitchens belittled the idea that six million Jews died, said the number was much less.

So, under Hitchens' rules of polemical engagement, was does that make Hitchens? A holocaust denier, a guy who has Faurisson and David Irving's books under his pillow. A Jew hater, or if you believe his sudden discovery (privately denied by his own brother on at least one occasion) at a mature age that his mother was Jewish a Jewish self-hater. Of course Hitchens revels in Cindy Sheehan's denial that she said in an email that her son died in a war for Israel. Hitchens writes that this denial makes her "a shifty fantasist". What would Hitchens, who's an on-the-record admirer ("a great historian") of the work of Nazi chronicler David Irving say about Hitchens' shifty denial of Epstein's recollection? What fun he would have with the witnesses the panic-stricken Hitchens, well aware that "holocaust denier" is not part of the resume of a Vanity Fair columnist, hastily mustered for his defense, a woman and a man present at that famous dinner in the Royalton. One his close friend, Anna Wintour, the present editor of Vogue and the other, Brian McNally, a longtime friend and business associate.

What a truly disgusting sack of shit Hitchens is. A guy who called Sid Blumenthal one of his best friends and then tried to have him thrown into prison for perjury; a guy who waited till his friend Edward Said was on his death bed before attacking him in the Atlantic Monthly; a guy who knows perfectly well the role Israel plays in US policy but who does not scruple to flail Cindy Sheehan as a LaRouchie and anti-Semite because, maybe, she dared mention the word Israel. She lost a son? Hitchens (who should perhaps be careful on the topic of sending children off to die) says that's of scant account, and no reason why we should take her seriously. Then he brays about the horrors let loose in Iraq if the troops come home, with no mention of how the invasion he worked for has already unleashed them.

Now for Hitchens' letter, with my point-by-point comments in red.

To CounterPunch:

The last time I can remember having contact with Alexander Cockburn was a little while ago, when I wrote him a note to encourage his defiance of all those who employed the innuendo of "anti-Semite" against him. This was a slander that was often used against both of us in the days when we defended the first intifadeh in the pages of The Nation and elsewhere.

So I'm a touch alarmed to see him so much disconcerted, by the realisation that Cindy Sheehan is a flake, as to try and turn this same hose of abuse on me. But a few swift points, if I may.

Extended search in the archives elicits no trace of this supportive letter. No matter. Let's assume Hitchens sent it. It merely highlights his hypocrisy and opportunism in trying to smear Cindy Sheehan on this very charge. And why does he write that I think Sheehan is "a flake", when I obviously don't?

1) Edward J. Epstein himself gave the names of Anna Wintour and Brian McNally as the only witnesses he could recall, to a statement that I never made. And indeed, they were the only other guests I could remember at a dinner-table that he attempted to crash. So their affirmative statements on my behalf seemed to decide the matter.

On this point let me express my confidence in two things: Edward Jay Epstein's powers of recollection and the loyalty to their pal Hitchens of both Wintour and McNally. As for Hitchens' views on the Holocaust, last week one of the most adoring of his former claque, Dennis Perrin, publicly recalled Hitchens talking to him some years ago about the Holocaust: "Take the claim that gassed Jews were turned into soap and lampshades. 'Stalinist fiction, my dear boy,' he said with a smile."

2) The same allegation surfaced a few years later, in the mouth of Henry Kissinger, and it has crossed my mind that Epstein may have been the foul-mouthed whisperer in that case also. Be that as it may, anyone with the patience to visit my website can read the ensuing correspondence between my lawyers and Henry Kissinger's lawyers. They withdrew the allegation and promised not to repeat it. Cockburn's standards are more relaxed: any old stick will do.

There's no need for dramatic evocation of a"foul-mouthed whisperer". When Epstein recalled Hitchens at the Royalton questioning the Six Million Dead, it was well covered in the press. Kissinger reads newspapers, same as other people. When he smeared Hitchens as a holocaust denier Hitchens got a good libel lawyer to write a threatening letter to Kissinger's lawyers. Kissinger's lawyers blinked, which was lucky for Hitchens who would have faced years of discovery and sworn depositions and mountainous legal bills. Of course these days Hitchens and Kissinger are on the same side, so they should shake hands and agree to forget all past unpleasantness. As for "relaxed' standards, let me remind Hitchens that I prefaced my remarks about him with the sentence "Let's suppose Hitchens was writing in similarly nasty terms about Hitchens", as he did about Cindy Sheehan. Now that he's felt its sting, maybe he should think twice about giving others the Hitchens treatment.

3) My long account of my view of, and experience of, David Irving is to be found in my latest collection, entitled Love, Poverty and War and published by Nation Books.

Who cares about long essays? In terms of the "Hitchens treatment", his lauding of Irving as "a great historian" is the phrase that counts.

4) My account of the sordid discoveries I made about my former friend Sidney Blumenthal was printed at tedious length in the Atlantic Monthly when his own misleading memoir was published.

Nothing was more ludicrous that Hitchens' post hoc efforts to lend a shimmer of moral principle to the squalid business of trying to get one of his closest friends in Washington thrown into prison for perjury.

No, I take that back. There WAS something more ludicrous, namely Hitchens' hope that Sid Blumenthal would forgive him and they could be friends again. Not long after he signed the affidavit designed to put Blumenthal behind bars, Hitchens showed up at one Georgetown party and proclaimed loudly to a reporter that Blumenthal had given him the suspicion of a nod that might well have been friendly. Of course Blumenthal thought then what he thinks now: that Hitchens was and is a grade A dirtbag.

5) So was my review of the 25th anniversary re-edition of Edward Said's Orientalism; a review determined by the book's date of publication and not by the rhythms of Edward's leukaemia. I had in the preceding years published a long disagreement with him in Salmagundi - that was on the Middle East - and another in my book on George Orwell. Both of these he disliked but was cordial and gruff about. I sent him an early copy of my review of Orientalism.

No one ordered Hitchens to write about Said's re-edition as Edward went into his final decline. It was at the time when Hitchens was burnishing his credentials as the hammer of Islam, an activity he obviously reckoned to be far more important than an old friendship.

6) I have no idea where Cockburn derives his knowledge of my brother's opinion, and I don't have fraternal relations as close as he does, but I could prove by the birth and marriage certificates that my brother gave me that our matrilineal side is Jewish. Why I should have to do this in an exchange with Cockburn is beyond me. My brother is a Christian fundamentalist, a supporter of "intelligent design" theory, a strong opponent of Blair and Bush in Iraq, and a member of Pat Buchanan's editorial advisory board at the American Conservative. He is, perhaps paradoxically, a strong pro-Zionist. But possibly he doesn't wish to be Jewish. That's his right.

You have to run awfully fast to keep up with the memory shifts and ideological gyrations of one Hitchens brother, so maybe the other is the same way. P. Hitchens certainly did tell a friend of mine a few years ago that C. Hitchens was talking rot about their mother.

7) In a recent effusion in the Huffington Post, Cindy Sheehan repeats the lie that her letter to ABC News Nightline was doctored, and says that a colleague of hers inserted the offending words in furtherance of his own "anti-Semitic" agenda. If she regards her own words as anti-Jewish, it's not up to me to correct her. I have not said that she is anti-Jewish, only that she shows asinister ineptness in handling the wild idea of a PNAC/JINSA pro-Sharon secret government in the United States. All I could do - see my latest Slate column and its sidebar - was to prove that her denial of her original words was 100% false. But perhaps to a "Mom", all things are pardonable. Cockburn wasn't always this mushy.

Gee! Hitchens attacks Cindy Sheehan for "paranoid anti-Zionism" and makes sure he gets her name in the same paragraph as David Duke'. Then he says piously "I have not said that she is anti-Jewish".

8) On consideration, I would take back the word "LaRouchie", which I applied not to her but to the words she said she didn't utter (but did). I was looking for a general phrase that united a pseudo-Left rhetoric with a rightist one. It is David Duke and Patrick Buchanan, as much as CounterPunch, who speak so hotly about her "groundswell". But let us by all means guard against guilt by association - even when the association is apparently welcome, or incited.

Six hundred and twenty nine words into a seven hundred and eighty-two word letter Hitchens addresses the very first point I raised, slipping us the news that he takes it back. Don't you just love the way he manages to squeeze Duke's name in again, before inveighing against "guilt by association"! And what's this about "welcome, or incited"? Is Hitchens trying to hint that Sheehan welcomed Duke's support?

In a way, Cockburn has the courage of his convictions (as well as, see above, the cowardice of them). I dare say he is annoyed to find "Cindy" crumbling under the first tough question she was asked. And he is welcome to describe me as a "sack of shit", as well as to smear excrement all over the walls of his nursery. But the above remain the facts.

Someone forwarded me an email he'd sent to Hitchens about the London bombings, along with Hitchens' thoughtful response, to the effect that the e-mailer was "puke-covered". I thought of calling Hitchens puke-covered, but in the end opted for sack of shit, on the grounds that the phrase evoked the core personality, rather than merely its superficial aspects.

I was surprised to see how many people wrote to CounterPunch after my remarks about Hitchens and his attack on Sheehan. Normally one can reckon that at least a couple of old Hitchens loyalists on the left side of the spectrum - not the scum he currently runs with - will try to defend the man. Not this time. Nary a pro-Hitchens email dropped into our inbox. With that Sheehan piece I reckon he lost the last of his former fans. Here, pure and crude, was Hitchens as White House hatchet man (no doubt getting his usual marching orders from Cheney aide Kevin Kellums), marching shoulder to shoulder with Limbaugh and O'Reilly, smearing a courageous and articulate woman.

There's no useful debate to be had with Hitchens. The man's been shipwrecked by reality, but on his fantasy Titanic Commodore Hitchens still paces the bridge, swearing against all the evidence that his ship's on course. He urged a war which has plunged a country, Iraq, ever deeper into death and ruin. How long will he go on saying the attack was worth it and that America should stay the course. On "staying the course" the people of Iraq gave their view in the elections, which they hoped would spell swift American departure. Of course Saddam Hussein was a bloodthirsty tyrant who brought misery and death to the Iraqi people. What will it take beyond the present 100,000 dead Iraqis for Hitchens and those like him to concede that between Saddam or invasion and American occupation, the former, indubitably horrible, was the preferable option? 500,000 dead, a million, two million? And at what point will the hammer of "Islamo-fascism" concede that no greater boost was ever given to Islamic fundamentalism in Iraq than the American attack. Of course Hitchens has got too much invested in this war ever to concede any of this. I'm sure that he went about the dirty business of sliming Cindy Sheehan without the slightest twinge.

Confirmation hearings concerning conservative judge John Roberts' nomination for U.S. Supreme Court justice begin on September 6, 2005.

We want to remind readers that many, if not most, of the political organizations which are opposing Roberts' nomination to the Supreme Court were founded by Jewish people, e.g. the group People for the American Way, which was founded by TV producer Norman Lear.

Jews, as a people, also heavily fund liberal political organizations in America [1]. In fact, you might say that the Jews built the political Left in America, starting especially with president F. D. Roosevelt's "New Deal" in the 1930s and continuing forward from there.

According to the DOE's report The Condition of Education 2005, as of two years ago the racial and ethnic makeup of America's public primary and secondary schools had risen to 42 percent nonwhite. Two years ago in the West (defined in the report as California, the other Pacific states, and the Rocky Mountain states, in other words well over half the U.S. land mass) white pupils had shrunk to a minority, 46 percent of the total. As The Condition of Education 2005 blithely notes, pupil numbers are soaring, thanks to immigration and to births among immigrants (the key factor in a 25 percent rise in the U.S. birth rate since the mid-1970s, with the public school enrollment reaching 48.2 million in 2004 and projected to hit 50 million in 2014 -- with the current "majority minority" enrollment in the West leading the way).

It's not exactly a secret these days that college life isn't what it used to be. Gone are the days when learned divines would lecture students on the evils of atheism and free thought. But if the old religion has long since been banished from ivied halls, the faith that has taken its place is no less dogmatic.

I refer, of course, to the religion of anti-racism, or the cult of multiculturalism, or whatever you want to call the poison that is now regularly injected into the minds of young people these days.

On my first day of college, I received formal instruction in the new religion. The university administrators who managed our freshman orientation thought it would be a good idea to show us a video on the Matthew Shepard murder, followed by a lecture from a supposed expert on "hate."

I don't remember much of the video or the lecture. But when our honored guest finally finished his lengthy harangue, he asked everyone in the audience to stand up. He then asked all of the women in the room to sit down, followed by all of the blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and so on until all of the "protected classes" had taken their seats.

"If you think hate crimes don't matter," he sobbed, "think again. After all, the only people left standing are a bunch of white guys." He then reached into his pocket and took out a thimble. After everyone in the audience had been given their own thimble, he said that if we ever felt the urge to hate, "take this thimble, and fill it with love." As if all of this were not enough, we were then sent back to our dorms to break up into focus groups so that we could have a "dialogue" on how to fight "hate."

The leader of our group was a lady with close-cropped hair and a degree in Women's Studies. Although we all tried to be polite at first, it did not take long before the meeting pretty much fell apart. When our group leader suggested that we confront our friends whenever they use "offensive" language or tell "insensitive" jokes, one of the many white guys in the room stood up and said that the "confrontation" she had in mind was not only a good way to look ridiculous in front of your friends but also a "good way to get your ass kicked."

A few moments later another white guy said that he didn't appreciate how he and all his kind were singled out during the presentation. The meeting stopped short of becoming a shouting match, but it didn't last much longer after these bombshells hit the floor.

Of course, once our "dialogue" was finished, the real discussion could begin. Most of the white guys on my floor (myself included) crowded into the hallway and let out a collective sigh of relief. Everyone was glad the ordeal was over, and soon everyone was ranting to each other about how insulting and ridiculous they thought the whole thing was.

I would say that that night I probably heard more "offensive" language and listened to more "insensitive" jokes than at any other time in my life. Thus, in a way, our freshman orientation did end up becoming a bonding experience -- but not in the way that the university administration had intended.

At the time I didn't think much about race or immigration, or about how they were related to the humiliation I was made to endure. I was a fairly conventional Republican and was content to support President Bush in pretty much anything he did. All of that began to change, however, when Bush announced his amnesty plan. After reading Pat Buchanan's searing indictment, I did some web surfing on immigration and soon enough I stumbled upon VDARE.COM.

It's probably not much of an exaggeration to say that this website saved my life. The more I read, the more I felt like I was falling down the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland. I had always been cynical, but even I was unprepared to find out just how criminally irresponsible the people running this country really are -- as story after story on VDARE.COM made painfully clear.

I decided to take action. I started debating immigration enthusiasts. I told liberals about the impact of immigration on the poor and the environment. I explained to libertarians about how open borders would only swell the underclass, and hence the federal government. Of course, falling wages and urban sprawl were not the only things that I read about on VDARE.COM. Steve Sailer's frank discussion of racial differences obliterated whatever egalitarianism still imprisoned me. Sam Francis's powerful and penetrating mind quickly converted me to paleoconservatism.

I wanted to share these revelations. But I knew I would have to tread carefully. There are few institutions as repressive as universities. Enforcing racial right-think always seems to be their top priority. Moreover, many in my generation have been so thoroughly brainwashed that they have difficulty even thinking about an issue tinged with the ultimate taboo of race. Peter Brimelow's recent baffled reception at Davidson College is a case in point.

Nevertheless, I went out to spread heresy inside the belly of the beast. I began by trying to explain to some of my close friends, ever so carefully, exactly what the country's shifting demographics mean.

I did have a few instant converts. But others took much longer to face the facts. It isn't always easy for people to abandon an entire worldview, especially to exchange it for one that is much grimmer. Young Republicans accustomed to being on the winning side are hard to win over to a movement that rarely scores a victory. It is harder still to convince them that many of the leaders, magazines, newspapers, and organizations that they grew up admiring are really the enemies of all they hold dear.

The plain fact is that some people simply do not want to believe. Despite the evidence around them, they do not want to admit to themselves that they are losing their country, that it is becoming a land of barbed wire fences and bodyguards, a Blade Runner world where a few fabulously wealthy people live in luxury while the great mass of the population live in desperation.

They simply prefer to believe the fairy tales about how immigrants will assimilate and how we will all some how "get along." Sometimes an ugly truth is no match for a beautiful lie. Yet I don't think that anyone will forget the things that I tell them. I suspect that as they grow older and start paying their own bills they'll come around.

Indeed, many of them already have. Because of my efforts, there are about a dozen more people as committed to immigration reform as I am (some of them read VDARE.COM even more than I do!) and a larger number who are much more aware and sympathetic than they ever were before meeting me.

Some are helping to spread the word. A friend of mine gave Buchanan's Death of the West to a friend of his, and apparently the book changed his friend's life. Another friend of mine wants a signed copy of Alien Nation. (Mr. Brimelow, do you think you can oblige?)

I only distribute Sam Francis and Steve Sailer to those I can trust. Even so, the ranks, though invisible, are growing. While I started out virtually alone, I now have a number of close confidants who understand full well what is happening to America -- and the West. None of them have any love for President Bush.

One thing's for sure, this "bunch of white guys" isn't going quietly.

A New Order Rising

Yesterday, St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Southeast Rockford held its 24th Annual Polish Fest. (Mike Wiser of the Rockford Register Star has a good write-up here.) As we have for five of the past six years, my family and I spent several hours at the festival, starting with the 10:00 A.M. Mass, a Novus Ordo liturgy partly in Polish and partly in English.

This is not one of the infamous "Polka Masses" that ultratraditionalists always number among the post-Vatican II abuses, but a standard Novus Ordo, reverently conducted, with the readings and homily in Polish and English, traditional Polish hymns (with each verse sung first in Polish, then in English), and a Mass setting that uses traditional Polish melodies for the Gloria, Sanctus, Pater Noster, Agnus Dei, etc. To the non-Pole, the music may seem a touch too sweet and Romantic; but I'm half-Polish, so it doesn't bother me at all.

St. Stan's is an interesting parish, hanging on in a neighborhood that has long been marginal at best, only a few blocks away from Marinelli Field (soon to be the former home of the Rockford Riverhawks Frontier League baseball franchise). Unlike St. Anthony of Padua Church, across the river and up a hill on the west side of town, St. Stan's is (I believe) not technically an ethnic parish but still a geographical one. (Membership in St. Anthony's is open to all in Rockford Diocese of Italian descent.) In practice, however, St. Stan's is still the Polish parish, long after the neighborhood around it has become largely (though not completely) de-Polonified.

Established in 1912 by Polish immigrants who overshot Chicago by about 70 miles, St. Stan's has been served for many years by Franciscan priests from both Chicago and Poland. Over the years, the pendulum has swung somewhat away from the church's Polish roots, and I remember, three or four years ago, thinking that things had gone so far that St. Stan's might not survive, and not simply as a Polish parish.

But immigration, both from the Polish community in Chicago and from Poland herself, has changed that. Yesterday's festival was the largest we've attended, and, while the food offerings were the same as they've always been -- kielbasa, fresh or smoked, with or without kapusta (the milder Polish version of sauerkraut, cooked for hours until creamy with mushrooms and pork); Polish beef (thin slices of roast beef simmered in a mushroom-and-onion gravy); pierogi (Polish dumplings made with sweet cheese, sauerkraut and mushroom, beef with onions and carrots, and savory cheese and potato); and various pastries -- they were all a cut above previous years in quality and flavor. The number of people speaking Polish on the festival grounds, while dancing to polka bands from Chicago and Wisconsin, was not inconsiderable.

Even more noticeable was the change in makeup of those attending Mass, where the balance is shifting decisively from third-, fourth-, and fifth-generation Polish-Americans to those born in Poland and their children. The bulletin is now bilingual (and no, the second language isn't Spanish), and the execrable Gather "hymnals" are nowhere to be found, replaced by a Polish lectionary and hymnal published in 1998 by the Catholic University of Lublin, Poland. (And no, the Polish hymnal does not contain Polish translations of Marty Haugen songs -- believe me, I checked -- but traditional hymns, Polish and otherwise.) And this fall, St. Stan's is reviving its Polish-language school.

The opening procession included beautiful handmade banners, with Polish inscriptions, of the men's Holy Name Society, the women's Altar Rosary Society, and a Divine Mercy Society. Young girls and boys dressed in traditional costume joined the procession as well, and the offertory included traditional offerings of baked (leavened) bread, flowers, and other fruit of the earth, as well as the unleavened hosts and the wine.

The previous pastor, Fr. John Mikula, a Polish-American Franciscan, is retiring, and the new pastor, installed just a few weeks ago, is a relatively young (he was born in 1968) Franciscan from Poland, Fr. Piotr Sarnicki, who has actually risen fairly high up in his chapter's leadership and had previously served a Franciscan church in Bratislava, Slovakia. He was joined by a priest visiting from Poland, whom he introduced as "my first pastor -- and my first master." He and the other Polish Franciscans now stationed at St. Stan's are decidedly masculine -- tall, well built, with deep voices and close-cropped hair. Later, when they joined the crowds in the 83-degree weather on the black tarmac, they didn't strip to their clerics but continued to wear the blacker-than-black robes of Conventual Franciscans of the Order of Friars Minor.

Since we only attend Mass at St. Stan's once per year, I cannot say whether the changes we observed in the conduct of the Mass have been in the works for some time or have been put in place by Fr. Sarnicki (though I suspect the latter). Yes, St. Stan's has altar girls; Bishop Thomas Doran, despite his indisputable orthodoxy (he is without a doubt one of the best Catholic bishops in the United States), has chosen to allow them, though it is diocesan policy that girls and boys cannot serve at the same Mass. At the consecration, the altar servers knelt at the front of the altar, backs to the congregation, in essentially the same position where altar servers are during the consecration in the Tridentine Mass. During the Pater Noster, less than a third of the congregation held hands -- a pleasant surprise. Perhaps the most interesting change was when Fr. Sarnicki began the Creed with the words "I believe . . . " (the correct translation of Credo) instead of the standard Novus Ordo "We believe . . . " (I believe that this change has been mandated throughout the English-speaking, but I don't believe it has been implemented yet.)

Small changes, to be sure, and even the most reverent Novus Ordo cannot be compared with the Tridentine Mass or the Divine Liturgy. And while I think that a "reform of the reform" (a phrase that originated, I believe, with Cardinal Ratzinger when he was at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith) is doomed to failure if it is regarded as the end in itself, I am hopeful that Pope Benedict has something else in mind. Small steps in the direction of reverence and beauty can make people hungry for more, and if, God willing, Pope Benedict makes the Tridentine Mass more widely available (even if only by instructing his brother bishops that requests for the indult should not, under ordinary circumstances, be denied), congregations such as the one at St. Stan's, already returning to their own national traditions, may be ready to return more fully to their spiritual ones as well.

"Bulletproof house builders looking shaky," says TheStreet. From the look of the charts, they are not just shaky but bleeding. New house sales rose again last month. But existing house sales fell in July, after posting a record of 7.35 million in June. Inventories of unsold houses are at a 17-year high.

Our guess is that the inventories and the price of oil are finally catching up with the house market. To the old line - "they're not making any more of it" - we reply with a headline we saw in Vancouver recently: "Condos, Condos, Condos!" Builders were putting up condos all over the place, and putting up houses on nearly every stretch of bare land they can get their hands on. Even in downtown, historic Annapolis we saw a stretch of luxury accommodations under construction across the street from St. John's college. (More on the convocation...below... In Annapolis, every word gets an extra 'e' on it whether it needs it or not, so the condos will probably be sold as 'historic condoes.') All these extra units are bound to depress prices.

So is gasoline at nearly $3 a gallon. After they've filled up the strategic storage tanks in their SUVs consumers have less money to spend on other things - including housing.

And so, perhaps, we have finally reached the "Beginning of the end for real estate," as the NY POST put it.

What a run it has been. The Center for Economic and policy Research reports that the housing market added $5 trillion in 'bubble wealth' to the American economy, an amount equal to $70,000 for a family of four. That is the fraudulent money that has sustained Americans at a standard of living they cannot really afford. It is the source of the illusion that the U.S. economy is growing and healthy. It was psuedo-wealth, an asset that really didn't exist. Too bad so many people spent it.

"House party, finally over?" asks the Financial Times.

We don't know the answer. Maybe it is over today. Maybe it will be over tomorrow. Our advice to readers: don't be the last ones to leave.

Here's a brief excerpt from the first Leuchter Report in 1988 so that we can hear from this "sinister" individual by the name of Fred Leuchter. Btw, Fred's title for it was "A Report on the Alleged Execution Gas Chambers at Auschwitz, Birkenau and Majdanek, Poland". This small excerpt alone demonstrates that the "Holocaust" story is a Big Lie.

It should be noted tht the official Auschwitz State Museum guidebook says that the building physically remains in the same condition as it was on liberation day on January 27, 1945.

There are 4 roof vents and 1 heater flue in the morgue area. The flue is open, showing no evidence of ever having been closed. The roof vents were not gasketed and new wood indicated they had recently been rebuilt. The walls and ceiling are stucco and the floor is poured concrete. The floor area is 844 sq. ft. The ceiling is beamed and on the floor one can see where the air raid shelter walls were removed. The lighting was not, and is not now, explosion-proof. (note: Zyklon B is extremely flammable -MH) There are floor drains in the floor of the chamber which connect into the main camp drain and sewer system. Assuming a 9 sq. ft. area per person to allow for gas circulation, which is nevertheless very tight, a maximum of 94 people could fit into this room at one time. It has been reported that this room could hold up to 600 persons.

The alleged execution gas chamber is, as stated earlier, not designed to be used in such a manner. There is no evidence of an exhaust system or fan of any type in this structure. The venting system for the alleged gas chamber consisted simply of four (4) square roof vents exhausting less than two (2) feet from the surface of the roof. Ventilating HCN gas in this manner would undoubtedly result in the the poison gas reaching the confines of the SS hospital a short distance across the road, with patients and support personnel being killed. Because of the fact that the building has no sealant to prevent leakage, no gasketed doors to prevent gas reaching the crematory, drains that would permit gas to reach every building in the camp, no heating system (note: Zyklon B needs to be used at higher than average room temperature for both safety and for it to work, greater than 79 degrees Fahrenheit -MH), no circulatory system, no exhaust system or venting stack, no gas distribution system, constant dampness, no circulation due to the number of people [allegedly] in the chamber, and no way of satisfactorily introducing the Zyklon B material, it would be sheer suicide to attempt to utilize this morgue as an execution chamber. The results would be an explosion or leaks gassing the entire camp.

Sounds likes a really irrational and unobjective "hater" to me.

THE REAL MOTIVE BEHIND THE "DEPARTMENT OF GLOBAL ANTI-SEMITISM"

On October 16, 2004 President Bush signed into law the Global Anti-Semitism Review Act. It establishes a special department within the U.S. State Department to monitor global anti-Semitism, reporting annually to Congress.

This is more "Hate Crimes" legislation, orchestrated by the international Jewish religious, educational, and fraternal organization, B'nai B'rith, and its Anti-Defamation League. The new "Department of Global Anti-Semitism" is designed to make critics of Israel not only into "anti-Semites" but ultimately into "domestic terrorists."

But first, what is anti-Semitism? Simple: It is the racist belief that Jews, because of heredity, are evil, greedy, corrupting, subversive, degenerate, etc. Hitler believed this. So do the KKK and certain "Christian identity" and white supremacist groups.

Such dehumanization of Jews is evil, un-Christian, un-American.

On the other hand, if the actions of individual Jews, Jewish institutions, Jewish religious or secular leaders, or the nation Israel have been evil, then vehement criticism is not anti-Semitic. It is courageous and laudable. Certainly, the Biblical prophets, including Christ, engaged in vitriolic criticism of the sinful nation Israel and its false leaders. No one considers them anti-Semitic.

TWISTED DEFINITIONS OF "ANTI-SEMITISM"

However, in its "Report on Global Anti-Semitism" and "Global Anti-Semitism Report," the U.S. State Department ignores the above perspectives. Here is a list of beliefs or activities the U.S. government now considers anti-Semitic:

1. Any assertion "that the Jewish community controls government, the media, international business and the financial world" is anti-Semitic.

2. "Strong anti-Israel sentiment" is anti-Semitic.

3. "Virulent criticism" of Israel's leaders, past or present, is anti-Semitic. According to the State Department, anti-Semitism occurs when a swastika is portrayed in a cartoon decrying the behavior of a past or present Zionist leader. Thus, a cartoon that includes a swastika to criticize Ariel Sharon's brutal 2002 invasion of the West Bank, raining "hell-fire" missiles on hapless Palestinian men, women and children, is anti-Semitic. Similarly, when the word "Zionazi" is used to describe Sharon's saturation bombing in Lebanon in 1982 (killing 17,500 innocent refugees), it is also "anti-Semitic."

4. Criticism of the Jewish religion or its religious leaders or literature (especially the Talmud and Kabbalah) is anti-Semitic.

5. Criticism of the U.S. government and Congress for being under undue influence by the Jewish-Zionist community (including AIPAC) is anti-Semitic.

6. Criticism of the Jewish-Zionist community for promoting globalism (the "New World Order") is anti-Semitic.

7. Blaming Jewish leaders and their followers for inciting the Roman crucifixion of Christ is anti-Semitic.

8. Diminishing the "six million" figure of Holocaust victims is anti-Semitic.

9. Calling Israel a "racist" state is anti-Semitic.

10. Asserting that there exists a "Zionist Conspiracy" is anti-Semitic.

11. Claiming that Jews and their leaders created the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia is anti-Semitic.

12. Making "derogatory statements about Jewish persons" is anti-Semitic.

13. Denying spiritually disobedient Jews the biblical right to re-occupy Palestine is anti-Semitic.

14. Alleging that Mossad was behind the 9/11 attack is anti-Semitic.

ANTI-SEMITISM IS A "HATE CRIME"

In the Global Anti-Semitism Report, State Department spokespersons Ambassador Edward O'Donnell and the head of the office of global anti-Semitism, Ambassador Michael B. Kozak, defend the State Department's definitions. O'Donnell's statement that he wants to "end all anti-Semitism and other hate crimes" reveals that he considers anti-Semitism a hate crime. Presumably, he would like such a "crime" to be punished.

These State Department reports repeatedly equate "strong, anti-Israel sentiment" and criticism of matters Jewish with "hate." They give no recognition to the possibility that such criticism might be sincerely motivated not by hate but by moral indignation or even love for the Jewish people.

The Report on Global Anti-Semitism repeatedly calls for passage, both nationally and internationally, of "hate crime" legislation. These laws, the brainchild of B'nai B'rith/ADL, also have as their ultimate goal making it a "hate crime" to criticize Jews, matters Jewish, or the state of Israel.

The Report on Global Anti-Semitism reeks with B'nai B'rith/ADL logic, phraseology, and evidence of their incredible worldwide organizational and statistic-gathering capacities. It contains thirty-three pages of minute documentation of "anti-Semitic incidents" in fifty-eight countries of the world, documentation which only B'nai B'rith/ADL, with its offices in more than fifty countries, could compile or even be that vitally interested in. Without a doubt, as with hate laws, this Global Anti-Semitism Review Act is their creation.

CRITICISM-FREE ZONE FOR JEWS

Thus, the Department of Anti-Semitism, applauded and advised by B'nai B'rith/ADL, is working to create a worldwide "criticism-free zone" for Jews in the "New World Order" that is coming. This report ignores whether criticisms of matters Jewish are true. What must be defended are the sensitivities of the Jewish people! Consequently, relating such unflattering realities as the anti-Christian, anti-Gentile contents of the Talmud and Kabbalah, Jewish origins of bolshevism, Jewish dominance of Hollywood and the media, Jewish control of Congress through AIPAC, Zionist atrocities and abrasiveness in the Middle East is anti-Semitic. It is "hate." It does not matter that such facts can be easily and extensively documented, often from impeccable Jewish sources such as the Encyclopedia Judaica.

All such anti-Semitism, this report says, is a "scourge," an "intolerable burden," which "for an increasingly interdependent world.must be ended."

On the other hand, according to the U.S. State Department, there does exist some possibility that "objective criticism" of Israel and its leaders can be tolerated - that is, just as long as such criticism does not "cross the line" and become "strong anti-Israel sentiment" and "virulent." Such criticism should not "demonize" Jews, Jewish religious or political leaders, or the state of Israel.

However, what may be considered "virulence" or "demonization" by Zionists may be seen as nothing more than salty truth-telling by critics of Israel. Hypocritically, the State Department itself is not above "demonizing" strong critics of Israel in the most "virulent" terms as a "plague" and "scourge" on mankind!

TURNING "ANTI-SEMITISM" INTO "DOMESTIC TERRORISM"

The State Department's twisted definition of anti-Semitism provides exponential opportunities to persecute Bible-believing Christians, anti-war activists, Moslems, as well as publishers and broadcasters in the years ahead. In fact, by turning "strong" criticism of the American/Zionist coalition into "anti-Semitism and other hate crimes," the State Department opens the door to eventual characterization of those who criticize Israel as not only anti-Semites but also as "domestic terrorists."

Here's how it can be done:

Today, those who raise funds in America to support America's and Israel's terrorist enemies are arrested as "domestic terrorists." But what if articulate Americans provided something else, potentially even more valuable to Israel's enemies: "strong criticism" of Israel? Such could weaken Israel morally in the sight of the world, giving justification to the claims of her terrorist enemies. Should they also be punished?

As the Second World War was beginning in 1939, Charles Lindberg was publicly critical of international Jews for inveigling America into a war to destroy Hitler. Lindberg believed that Hitler should be allowed to do what he wanted to do most, move east and destroy "Jewish Communism" in Russia.

In 1944, 30 Americans, who agreed with Lindberg, were arrested for the crime of "sedition," weakening America's resolve in the fight against fascism. Later investigation under the Freedom of Information Act revealed that the ADL, attempting to equate criticism of international Jews with Nazism, had entirely created the FBI case.

Records revealed that the ADL was "only warming up" by pursuing sedition convictions against 30 innocent Americans. Their ultimate ambition was to imprison prominent critics of evil Jewish leadership, especially Charles Lindberg. Fortunately, ADL's attempt to transform 30 critics of international Jews into "Nazis" failed when the judge died and the case was dissolved.

Today, America and Israel are allies in the "war on terror." Tomorrow, especially if the war on terror intensifies and America and Israel cooperate even more closely, criticism of America's ally in the war on terrorism may be construed as "aiding and abetting the enemy." Such "strong criticism" or anti-Semitism may be seen as not only weakening Israel, but America itself.

Turning millions of Americans into anti-Semites for criticizing Israel is thus a transition toward ADL's ultimate goal: making such persons "enemies of the war on terror," i.e., "domestic terrorists."

They then can be prosecuted under Homeland Security laws.

CANADA: ALREADY MAKING "ANTI-SEMITES" INTO "DOMESTIC TERRORISTS"

In Canada, we are seeing exactly this happen. Ernst Zundel is a Holocaust revisionist who doubts that a full six million Jews were deliberately murdered by the Nazis, largely by gassing. He asserts that untold numbers of Jews in German internment camps, especially in the last years of the war, died not in gas chambers, but as a result of massive, well-documented typhus epidemics, which also killed countless Poles, Gypsies, Russians, etc. Yet in Canada, thanks to ADL/B'nai B'rith, it is a "hate crime" to lesson to any degree the six million figure of Holocaust dead, or that most of them died in gas chambers. Such diminishment is anti-Semitism, a "hate crime" punishable by harsh fines and imprisonment. Several years ago Zundel was deported from his home in Tennessee back to Canada to spend more than two years in solitary confinement in a Canadian prison. He was then deported back to his native Germany where he remains in prison.

Under what charge have Canadian authorities been holding him?

You guessed it. He is a "terrorist threat!"

So it will be for millions of Americans tomorrow if ADL/B'nai B'rith have their way and the Department of Anti-Semitism's twisted definitions of anti-Semitism are allowed to stand.

The Department of Global Anti-Semitism is informing the world who the "domestic terrorists" of tomorrow will be.

If it were her property being destroyed, she would feel the pain of losing what her property represents: hard work and sacrifice: her nation--even her life!

It has been the evil idea that property is not worth losing a life to protect which has done the most to put our lives at risk, because it was the rational idea that a thief could lose his life trying to steal your property that kept you and your loved ones -- and your community -- safe.

After Marxist-/socialist-/feminist-driven legislation and Supreme Court decisions deemed property not worth losing a life over (liberal/activist courts during the Sixties and Seventies), criminals were emboldened to try taking your property from you (this contributed to skyrocketing crime rates), knowing that you could be sued and/or jailed for harming thieves while they took possession of your property (recall the thief who had fallen through the roof of a store he was trying to access, and had recovered damages from the store owner for his injuries!).

So your Marxist-driven government had - in fact - invited criminals to seize your property, which radically increased the number of incidents of criminals killing those property owners who dared to resist, or looked at them in the wrong way (recall the property owners who had been jailed for injuring a criminal with unequal force!).

Such laxity in the rule of law is a powerful signal to invaders that whitey isn't protecting his borders or his own people. If criminals receive such deference from liberal judges and legislators, so will migrants. And so they began to rush in and take your nation (recall the CBS report on Illegal immigration in the late Nineties: "They Want What You Have").

If we had had the legal protection to kill thieves, we'd have seen theft and murder rates plunge to pre-Fifties levels; a reason-driven time when your government viewed your property as your life. And we'd have seen illegal immigration plunge to a trickle.

That Land Is Your Land

Arlo Guthrie [right] remembers his boyhood Hebrew tutor as "a sweet guy, a nice guy." Every week for an hour or so, the young rabbi would travel to the Guthrie's home in Queens to teach Torah to the boy and his younger brother and sister. When he turned 13 in 1960, Arlo showed off some of what he had learned at his Bar Mitzvah, an event attended by his famous but ailing father, the legendary folksinger Woody Guthrie.

It was many years later that Arlo Guthrie heard the name of his rabbi again. By this time, Meir Kahane was no longer the gentle teacher who would visit the Guthries in Howard Beach each week. To the adult Arlo, this Kahane seemed unrecognizable. Kahane had become a firebrand, a charismatic public speaker, a political leader, and -- in the eyes of many -- a Jewish racist.

The unlikely story of Arlo Guthrie and Meir Kahane is one of two roads crossing briefly, then diverging sharply. Following in his father's footsteps, Arlo Guthrie became a respected folksinger ("Alice's Restaurant," "Coming into Los Angeles"), a prominent member of the Woodstock Generation, and a longtime peace activist. Kahane became nothing less than one of the most polarizing figures in modern Jewish history.

The founder of the Jewish Defense League, the Brooklyn-born Kahane is perhaps better known as the leader of Israel's radical Kach party. In his many articles, speeches, and books, Kahane advocated the forcible expulsion of all Arabs from Israel, the annexation of the West Bank and Gaza territories, and the unrestricted building of Jewish settlements. His was an uncompromising hard line: "When Israel liberated [the West Bank and Gaza] in 1967, the normal, sane thing to have done would have been to drive the scum out," he wrote in May 1989, going on to explain, "The Arabs are the deadly enemy of the Jewish state, who would bring on us a slow Auschwitz -- not with gas, but with knives and hatchets."

Kahane won election to the Knesset in 1984 but was later banned from political activity in Israel because of alleged subversive activity. He was assassinated in New York in 1990 by an Egyptian-born American who was later linked to a terrorist cell that carried out the World Trade Center bombing in 1993. His son, Binyamin Zev Kahane, was murdered with his wife in Israel in December 2000.

Although few people realize it, Arlo and his siblings were raised Jewish by their mother, Marjorie Mazia, Woody Guthrie's wife of 22 years. Guthrie and Mazia had met in New York in the early 1940s, when she was a dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company and he was a rising young singer and writer of protest songs and odes to the struggles of people in the Oklahoma and Texas Dustbowls. The couple moved to Coney Island in 1942 (they married three years later), and lived in a heavily Jewish neighborhood across the street from Marjorie's parents, Isadore and Aliza Greenblatt, a well-known Yiddish poet. After the birth of their three children -- Arlo, brother Joadie, and sister Nora -- the Guthries moved from Brooklyn to Howard Beach, a middle-class section of Queens.

Arlo Guthrie describes his childhood "as a typical Jewish upbringing for the time," though the family was never formally associated with a synagogue. While his father's health was often uncertain -- Woody Guthrie eventually died from Huntington's disease, a degenerative nervous-system disorder, in 1967 -- the family frequently visited Marjorie's parents for Shabbat dinners and holiday celebrations. The children played games and met friends at what Arlo remembers as "a Jewish Y."

At the urging of her parents, who had briefly emigrated to Israel and returned, Marjorie sought out a rabbi to provide religious instruction for her young children. Around 1958, she found Kahane, then in his mid-twenties and only a few years out of yeshiva in Brooklyn. "My memory of him is really not that good," recalls Arlo, now 56. "All I really remember was him coming to our house. He was a sweet guy, but not really all that enthusiastic about teaching us. I guess it was something he had to do." In fact, despite Kahane's instruction, Arlo never learned to speak or read Hebrew.

Some years later -- Arlo isn't sure when -- he heard Kahane giving one of his typically inflammatory speeches. He was stunned. "I thought it was just so crazy," he said. "I couldn't believe it. I thought, that's not the nice guy I knew." Today, he says, the joke in his family "is that [Kahane] is my fault. He seemed like such a nice guy before he met me!"

Guthrie has spent many of his adult years exploring religion and spiritual themes. He has studied Christianity, Buddhism, and Hinduism, and operates the Guthrie Center and Foundation, an interfaith worship and educational organization in Great Barrington, Massachusetts ("It's basically bring your own God," he says.) While Kahane was a peripheral figure to him, he observes of his one-time mentor, "I'm at the opposite end of the political spectrum from him. ... It seemed to me he became so embittered. When you become so angry, you lose the ability to overcome your enemies because your heart closes up. It's a common mistake we all make. The position of our teachers and leaders often becomes Us against Them. Then you find yourself in the never-ending cycles of violence that we're in today. It won't stop until we stop following people who are charismatic, but are saying the wrong things."

Arlo Guthrie's brief encounters with Meir Kahane weren't the only unusual collaboration that took place in his family during those years. As it happened, Woody Guthrie and his mother-in-law, Aliza Greenblatt, had begun discussing and exchanging their work some years earlier. Unlikely as it sounds, the Okie balladeer and the Yiddish poet had much in common. Both were bound by common social concerns -- hatred of fascism, love of working people, identification with the oppressed. In addition to reading and discussing her poems with him, Greenblatt exposed Guthrie to Jewish history; he also studied Torah (although Arlo suspects that he did so mainly to impress his future father-in-law). From these conversations and readings, Arlo Guthrie says his father wrote "barrels" of Jewish-themed songs, on everything from Hanukah to the Holocaust. Arlo intends to reclaim a bit of this family history. Working in collaboration with his sister Nora and the musical group the Klezmatics, Guthrie will release an album of his father's Jewish songs sometime in 2004.

Subject: Bloomberg on Metzitzah B'peh

Controversial Circumcision Rite Becomes Issue in Mayoral Race

The controversy over a disputed circumcision ritual could affect the mayor's race in New York City, as some members of the Hasidic community are promising to protest any restrictions placed on the mohel in question.

Rabbi Yitzchok Fischer has been the subject of an investigation by the city's health department since three infants tested positive for herpes simplex, one of whom later died. At issue is whether Fischer transmitted the virus to the infants via direct oral suction of the circumcision wound -- a method known as metzitzah b'peh, a traditional ritual still prevalent in many Orthodox communities.

Since the investigation was first revealed in February, the department has obtained a court-issued temporary restraining order "consented to by the mohel" that "prevents him from performing the metzitzah b'peh," according to a lawyer heading the city's legal action on the case. The attorney added that the city has been unsuccessful in compelling Fischer to provide a blood sample as yet.

The health department and Mayor Michael Bloomberg have stated repeatedly at meetings with ultra-Orthodox leaders that a general ban on the practice is not in the cards. One such meeting, with 22 Hasidic rabbis, took place August 11 at City Hall.

Rabbi Hillel Weinberg of the Central Rabbinical Congress, a Satmar organization, attended the meeting and told the Forward that Bloomberg "says that he's not considering" a ban on the practice. However, Weinberg added, the Satmar community would consider any restriction placed on Fischer to be a ban and would cause a reaction that could hurt Bloomberg at the polls in the upcoming election.

Weinberg said that his community has met with all four Democratic mayoral candidates to discuss the issue, but none have made any promises about what they would do about the issue if elected.

One Democratic candidate, Rep. Anthony Weiner, who represents ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods in Brooklyn, told the Forward, "It is not the place of the department of health to be deciding on a religious practice." Weiner added, "I am troubled, based on the facts of this case, about whether or not the city has overreached here."

None of the other Democratic candidates contacted by the Forward would comment on the administration's approach.

Rabbi David Zwiebel, government affairs representative for ultra-Orthodox organization Agudath Israel of America, said that his group has "stated that we think there is something not right about the city making this final determination without allowing Rabbi Fischer and his experts full access to the investigatory data."

Zwiebel also said that the city is seeking to replace its temporary restraining order with a permanent one. A city official declined to comment on this claim, saying it "involves ongoing legal issues."

While Zwiebel raised questions about the city's action, it stopped short of the Satmar leaders' demand that Fischer's actions not be restricted in any way no matter what evidence the city has compiled against him.

The split reflectsa growing divide between Agudath Israel, the organization that is often seen as the primary representative of the ultra-Orthodox community, and some of the community's Hasidic members, who deny that the organization adequately represents their interests. While the Agudath Israel officially represents several Hasidic sects, the largest (Satmar) and the most well known (Chabad-Lubavitch) are not a part of the organization.

Neither Zwiebel nor any other Agudath Israel representative was invited to the August 11 meeting between Bloomberg and Satmar rabbis. Agudath Israel-affiliated rabbis had their own meeting with the mayor several months ago.

In general, Zwiebel said that for decades, the strongly anti-Zionist Satmar community has been critical of Agudath Israel for its acceptance of Israel. He added that some segments of the ultra-Orthodox community that require metzitzah b'peh might feel that Agudath Israel "does not represent their interests" because the organization includes some groups that do not require the ritual.

Zwiebel described the Satmar community as "a growing force" that "sometimes pursues issues through their own advocates and their own method."

"We don't have a problem with that," Zwiebel said.

The issue of regulating some or all ritual circumcisers as a means of preventing herpes is a complicated issue, since an estimated 90% of the American population carries the antibodies for the virus and it is hard -- perhaps impossible -- to predict which individuals are more likely than others to spread it. Some groups, including the Modern Orthodox-dominated Rabbinical Council of America, have recommended using a sterile tube and gloves to avoid direct oral contact -- but that option has been rejected by Hasidic sects and by other ultra-Orthodox communities as religiously unacceptable.

Research conducted for a specialist BBC sound unit claims that the traditional cockney accent is being chased out of its home in the East End of London by young people who copy the voices of Bangladeshi immigrants.

True Cockneys are said to have been born within earshot of the "Bow bells" referring to the church of St Mary Le-Bow, Cheapside. Research centred this area has shown that a new hybrid patois is being used by the minority white school children who mimic their Bangladeshi classmates who are in the majority in almost every school in the area.

Sue Fox, a socio-linguist at Queen Mary College, University of London, carried out the research for the BBC Voices project.

"The majority of young people of school age are of Bangladeshi origin and this has had tremendous impact on the dialect," she said. "Young people are using a variety of English which we might say is Bangladeshi-accented. Some adolescents of white British origin are also using these features."

Girls are said to be less susceptible to the accent shift, which includes referring to slippers as "skets", trainers as "creps" and using the word "nang" to suggest "good".

Experts suggest that a similar phenomenon is taking place across the country, leading to Caribbean-Scouse in Liverpool and Cardiff-Hindi in Wales.

Not dead, just transplanted

Some linguists dispute that the accent is not yet "brown bread". Dr Laura Wright, senior lecturer in English language at Cambridge University, said it was shifting to outlying towns and boroughs. Our own research shows that it is alive and well in the Medway towns and in south Essex where large numbers of white-flighters have moved and settled. One resident in Dagenham told our website reporter that he moved his entire family away from his old "gaff" to get away from the "Fergals". He added that all his old "chinas" were doing the same and he said it was all the fault of that Tony Blair who is a right "merchant"!

In an August 16, 2005 report, Mr. Sazhin writes that over the past week two men from the Caucasus have been set upon by a group of youths in separate attacks, both of which have taken place at the same open air market. One victim remains in the hospital; police are investigating both assaults.

Mr. Sazhin adds that racist and antisemitic graffiti have become more common in the city this summer, and that leaflets of the extremist nationalist Russian Liberation Front have been distributed for the first time in the city.

Krasnodar Skinheads Kill One of the Their Own

Two neo-Nazi students at the Krasnodar Agro-University have been charged with murdering one of their comrades for insufficient zeal, according to an August 16, 2005 article in the local newspaper "Krasnodarskie Izvestiya" and an August 17, 2005 article in the local paper "Kuban Segodnya." The 19 year old student was accused by his comrades of losing interest in the local neo-Nazi movement because he stopped attending neo-Nazi concerts and meetings of the local chapter of Russian National Unity. When he dismissed these accusations with a laugh, the two neo-Nazis beat him severely. The victim, identified in the reports only as Andrey, then went home to his village outside the city, where he began to feel ill and later died of internal injuries.

One of the attackers reportedly has a criminal record-he received a two year suspended sentence for his participation in an act of mass vandalism directed at Armenian tombstones in 2002.

Arrests Made in Volgograd Foreign Student Dorm Fire Bombing

Two 17 year olds have been charged with throwing a Molotov cocktail into a dormitory housing Indian students in Volgograd, Russia last month, according to an August 20, 2005 article in the local newspaper Gorodskie Vesti. The students have been charged with "hooliganism" for the firebombing, which luckily caused no injuries. Both suspects have confessed to the crime, which they claim had nothing to do with ethnic hatred. A local police official stated that the youths have no ties to skinhead groups, but added, somewhat cryptically, that "their outward appearance would confirm" that they are in fact neo-Nazis.

Zimbabwe Experiences Exodus of Whites

Fewer than 50,000 whites remain in authoritarian governed Zimbabwe, down from a peak of nearly 300,000 under white rule, according to recent census data published Monday.

The number of white Zimbabweans has continued to drop since the census was conducted in August 2002 amid the seizure of thousands of white-owned commercial farms for redistribution to black Zimbabweans, analysts said. Some independent experts estimate fewer than 30,000 whites remain.

The so-called fast-track land reform, coupled with years of drought, has crippled Zimbabwe's agriculture-based economy. Inflation and unemployment have soared and an estimated four million people are in need of food aid in what was once a regional breadbasket.

Initial results of the 2002 census published in December that year showed that 3 million to 4 million Zimbabweans had fled the country as economic refugees, bringing the total population down to below 12 million.

Adding to the problem has been widespread allegations of human rights abuses leveled as President Robert Mugabe's authoritarian government. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice recently labeled Zimbabwe an outpost of tyranny, while world governments and human rights groups have accused his party of rigging elections, repressing opponents and driving agriculture to the brink of collapse.

A detailed analysis of the results of the latest census was completed recently and published Monday in the state-owned Herald newspaper. Among the findings were that whites numbered just 46,743 in 2002, The Herald reported. Nearly 10,000 of them were over the age of 65, and less than 9,000 were under 15. The white population peaked at 293,000 in 1974. White rule ended six years later.

Other African nations, including Mozambique and Nigeria, have welcomed Zimbabwe's experienced white farmers in the hopes they can help boost commercial agricultural production. But Zimbabwe officials have appeared undisturbed by the dwindling population. Didymus Mutasa, now head of the country's feared Central Intelligence Organization, told the British Broadcasting Corp. at the time of the census that he would be happy to see Zimbabwe's population halved.

"We would be better off with only 6 million people, with our own people who supported the liberation struggle. We don't want all these extra people," he said. Last week, Finance Minister Herbert Murerwa slashed spending on health and education even further to fund the reconstruction of homes and businesses destroyed in a widely condemned slum clearance campaign.

MEXICO CITY -- The corrupt influence of drug traffickers, long a problem in Mexico's police forces, has been spreading into the top federal investigative agency, the country's attorney general acknowledged Wednesday. "We are starting to have a problem with corruption and penetration" inside the Federal Agency of Investigation, known as the AFI, Daniel Cabeza de Vaca Cabeza told a Senate commission. Cabeza de Vaca also said that more than 820 people have been killed in Mexico in recent months in drug trafficking-related incidents.

AFI, which is responsible for drug-trafficking investigations, was created in 2001 partly because of rampant corruption in a predecessor operation, the Federal Judicial Police -- which itself had been created several years earlier to root out corruption in a still-earlier agency.

Several AFI agents have being detained on drug trafficking charges in recent years, but officials say that the agency is relatively clean. The government also depends heavily on the military to attack drug gangs. In March, prosecutors charged a former head of the AFI office in the Caribbean state of Quintana Roo with protecting drug traffickers. In recent weeks, a judge in the nearby State of Mexico has ordered the arrests of several AFI agents, one of them a high-ranking officer, accused by prosecutors of trying to extort money from a former president's brother.

WHO'D be one of you, eh chaps? Let's be honest, your CV these days is hardly enviable. Outperformed by girls at school, emasculated by women at home and at work, shockingly dislocated from your emotions and the hapless joke figure in endless TV commercials and sitcoms whose message is that females rule and men are fools.

Well wise up, because apparently it's time to say enough is enough; the ridicule of men must stop. The pendulum of power has swung too far into the female corner and you must stand up and assert your right to masculinity. Stop apologising for it, be comfortable with it, but while you're at it try to embrace a few female traits such as compromise, communication and learning to multitask.

It is called M-ness and it is The Future of Men -- at least according to one particular woman who has written a book with just this title. Marian Salzman, with her co- authors Ira Matathia and Ann O'Reilly, is the American trendspotter who coined the term "meterosexual" to describe a certain breed of straight, sensitive, modern men who see nothing wrong with exfoliating and going to see a weepy film. Now she has come up with another concept to which all males must apparently subscribe if they wish to reclaim "their space, their sense of worth and even themselves".

Indeed, she believes the revolution is already under way and that this is the "dawning of the Age of M-ness".

What's that being shouted from the bar of the Ferret and Firkin? "What a load of bollocks"? Undeniably there will be plenty of men who will laugh into their pints at the very idea. But Salzman, an executive vice-president at the advertising agency J. Walter Thompson, has serious points to make about where men go from here. Society has changed for ever, she says, so males must adapt if they are to reassert themselves in a world increasingly defined and dominated by femininity.

It is not just men who are fed up with male-bashing. Research shows that women, too, want men to assert themselves as confident, vital, masculine partners. They want "real" men back. But because we will never return to 1950s patriarchy -- the genie cannot be put back in the bottle, thank God -- men must redefine masculinity to accommodate who they are today. They must find, says Salzman, their own personal version of manliness.

"What has happened to men over the past 30 or so years is that they have moved from defining the world . . . to having their world defined by women," says Salzman, 45. "Men have been the butt of the joke for too long. TV is the snapshot of our everyday lives . . . there are men making jokes about men, women making jokes about men but not men making jokes about women because that would be politically incorrect.

"We used to worry about teenage girls losing their voice . . . but now I'm feeling very worried for 15-year-old boys. Where do they feel they fit in any more?" She believes the young working-class male is most demoralised in the new, female-orientated society, having, outside sport, few strong role models to admire.

Michael Buerk, the veteran BBC newsreader, echoes these sentiments in the current issue of the Radio Times. He asserts that life is now lived according to women's rules, that traditional male traits of "reticence, stoicism and single-mindedness" have been marginalised, that men have been reduced to little more than "sperm donors".

The TV programme Queer Eye for the Straight Guy emblemises the problem.

"It is basically saying that no straight man knows how to dress himself," says Salzman. "So at the top you have women and the next most refined individual after that is a gay man -- and at the bottom of the pecking order you have a straight man.

It was supposed to be a storybook tale of young refugees triumphing against all odds. But an alarming number of Sudan's "Lost Boys" have spiraled into alcohol abuse, crime and even fratricide. What went wrong?

Aug. 16, 2005 | PHOENIX -- When Joseph Abil arrived in Dallas in 1995, he represented the first wave of extraordinary refugees, mostly young men, who became known to the world as the "Lost Boys of Sudan." Abil, 20 years old at the time, had fled civil war in his native country that wiped out his village. He survived a perilous migration across Africa, endless hunger, and harsh conditions in a refugee camp in Kenya. When he settled in Texas, with the help of the United States government, he was finally free to lead a life of hope and promise.

But life in America presented Abil with struggles and dangers of a different kind. In 1997, feeling isolated, he moved to Phoenix, where other refugees from his Sudanese community had been resettled. He lived alone in an apartment and worked as a stock clerk at a Fry's supermarket. Although Abil took medication for mental health problems, his friend Martin Abucha said Abil had no trouble holding down a job.

Early this year, Abil stopped going to work. One afternoon in February, he left his apartment and headed for the I-17 freeway, miles from where he lived, and started wandering north along the median during rush hour. A highway patrol officer approached Abil, and according to a report from Arizona state officials, Abil grew "agitated" and refused to move off the median to a safe location. The officer fired a Taser at Abil, who retaliated by throwing "baseball-sized rocks" at him. Pulling out a handgun, the officer fired three shots at Abil. The refugee who triumphed over years of hardship in Africa fell dead on the Arizona freeway.

Since the late 1990s, the Lost Boys have made headlines around the world. In 2001, their sojourn was hailed as a remarkable success story on "60 Minutes II." "In Sudan, thousands of Lost Boys fought off dangers we can barely imagine, and are now, happily, flying off to the United States," reported CBS correspondent Bob Simon. In a second story that aired the following January, Simon said of the Lost Boys' lives in America: "There were dark moments. There were bound to be, but they passed." A Kansas City man, featured in the show, said of one Lost Boy he mentored, "He's living the American dream. He's already got a job; he's self-sufficient. You've taken someone literally, almost literally, in the Stone Age and dropped him into a modern civilization, saying after four months you're on your own, and he is, and he's fine."

Many of Abil's "brothers," as the Lost Boys call each other, have indeed made better lives here. They are earning high school diplomas, attending community colleges and universities, and holding down a variety of jobs, typically low-paying ones. Today, nearly 4,000 Lost Boys call America home.

Last December, Arizona's Deng Majok Chol, 27, became the first Lost Boy to graduate from a major U.S. college, Arizona State University, with a double major in political science and economics. In February of this year, People magazine profiled three Lost Boys who had returned to the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya to help their brothers still stuck there. "In less than five years," reported the magazine, "they transformed from wide-eyed immigrants who had never seen a kitchen freezer to young men working their way through college in San Diego."

But for an alarming number of Lost Boys, their journey to America has taken a much darker turn -- into unemployment, alcohol abuse, petty crime, murder and suicide. Unresolved cultural differences, rock-level IQs, and a lack of support, training and education have led them to fall through the cracks of the social and legal system. Many Lost Boys, advocates and researchers say, suffer from some degree of trauma-related mental illness, most notably post-traumatic stress disorder. Others say they're no different from other niggers.

"We want our Lost Boys happy, polite and grateful -- and during the first couple of honeymoon years, that's what we saw," says Ann Wheat, co-founder of the Arizona Lost Boys Center in Phoenix. The center, which opened in 2003, offers more than 400 Lost Boys a place to gather, speak with career counselors, and get legal and medical advice. "But we do the Lost Boys and ourselves a huge disservice by perpetuating a one-dimensional image of them. If they were all models of emotional health, we might as well conclude that war is good for children, save our time and resources, and all go home." Wheat, who also works as a supervisor for Phoenix's city parks, says that reports of troubling incidents around the country often reach the center through the Lost Boys' own word-of-mouth network. Lately, she says, "It has started to feel like an epidemic."

v The Lost Boys were victims of a brutal civil war in the south of Sudan that began more than two decades ago. The Arizona center's current outreach coordinator, Jany Deng, 26, landed in Phoenix in 1995; he and his blood brother Simon were two of the first four Lost Boys to arrive in Arizona. Their saga had begun 10 years before.

While herding cattle in 1985, Jany and other boys from his village witnessed the destruction of their homes by government-backed Islamic militias. They took off running, beginning a multiyear exodus that spanned East Africa and countries around the globe. Many of their parents were murdered and their sisters raped, enslaved and killed. (As a result, there are fewer Lost Girls.)

For years, tens of thousands of Lost Boys walked more than 1,000 miles across East Africa, thousands dying of starvation, disease, and militia and animal attacks. Jany and his group first went east to Ethiopia, where Jany was reunited with Simon, who had made it there with another group of Lost Boys. But when civil war flared up in 1990, they fled back to Sudan. They returned to nothing: Their family and village were gone. Eventually they trekked to Kenya, winding up in the Dadaab refugee camp. After a year in Dadaab, they were among the first few relocated to the United States.

In the 2003 documentary film "Lost Boys of Sudan," one Lost Boy expresses the shared perception, while in the Kakuma refugee camp, of what it will be like to leave for America: "This journey is like you are going to heaven."

When Jany and Simon arrived in Arizona, Jany, then age 16, was sent to live with a foster family; Simon, 23, shared an apartment with two older boys. It was a pattern that continued from coast to coast as more of them came; the minors were resettled with families, while older Lost Boys were placed in dingy apartments, often cramped together, in rough city neighborhoods or on the outskirts of towns.

In Phoenix, Jany attended school, made friends and joined the track team; Simon couldn't keep a job. He told Jany that "people looked at him different and made comments." By the spring of 1997, Simon had grown despondent. He wanted to bring his girlfriend from Dadaab to Arizona, but to no avail. He had no money or job prospects. According to Jany, Simon began to speak of suicide.

On Apr. 10, 1997, Simon bought a 9MM rifle and rode a city bus toward the Catholic Social Services office building in North Phoenix. He got off the bus, took the rifle out of its box and fired it in the parking lot of a Circle K convenience store before heading to the office. A police helicopter and officers responded as Simon entered Catholic Social Services at lunchtime. Once inside, Simon looked for his caseworkers and, according to the police report, began firing his gun in the air. No one was hurt. The police arrived at the building and Simon shot at Officer Terrence Kobza. Kobza returned fire and killed Simon with a bullet in the arm and another in the chest.

Today, Jany still hasn't made peace with Simon's death. "Why here?" he asks. "He could have died over there. I could have died over there," he says of Africa, his words breaking into a stutter. "The way it happened, it was not a good way."

Local news and police reports from the past eight years, along with accounts from advocates and Lost Boys themselves, reveal a trail of tragic events.

In August 2001 in Boston, Daniel Majok Kachuol, 19, was charged with assault and rape, just six months after his arrival. In September 2002 in Rochester, Minn., Christofar Atak, 31, ran in front of a police car in the street, shouting, "I want to die!" Under disputed circumstances, a police officer ended up shooting Atak point-blank in the back. Atak, who survived, had a blood-alcohol level that indicated he was severely intoxicated. That same month, Phillip Ajack Cham, 33, entered an immigration office in Houston demanding to be repatriated to Sudan; he grabbed a gun from a guard, firing it and threatening suicide before being subdued by officers.

In April 2004 in Fargo, N.D., Chol Deng Chol, 25 -- considered "one of the most promising students we've seen in a long time" by a mentor at North Dakota State University -- was charged with the rapes of two teenage girls after a night of drinking. In Atlanta that summer, Ajuong Manuer, 21, died following an alcohol-fueled fight -- over $10 -- with fellow Lost Boy Mayen Biar Diing, 25. And in May 2005 in Seattle, Kero Riiny Giir, 27, stabbed to death an ex-girlfriend, Lost Girl Roda Bec, 16, for being "rude" to him, as he would later tell police. After fleeing the scene, Giir had jumped off a highway overpass in an apparent suicide attempt.

"We have a lot of angry Lost Boys, and it has not been brought to the attention of the community," says John Aza, 40, director of the Southern Sudanese Resettlement Program in Tucson. Aza left Sudan in 1996 and is currently earning a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Arizona. He does not count himself among the Lost Boys, though he is close with the community. At the end of July, Aza visited six Lost Boys who had been released from jail -- some arrested for driving while intoxicated, two for arguing with police officers after a fight in a club. For Lost Boys who lack jobs and community support, and who have a hard time adapting to American culture, says Aza, alcohol is often "the nearest comfort."

"A lot of Lost Boys have been picked up for DUIs," Wheat says. "It appears to be a growing problem in the Sudanese community, but it's something that's kept a dark secret. They don't deal with it. We could start an AA meeting at the center and nobody would come."

Advocates across the country, including from large enclaves in Atlanta and Jacksonville, Fla., express serious concerns about publicizing the Lost Boys' problems. They say the refugee community is extremely sensitive about them, while some fear a backlash could undermine fundraising, scholarships and the ability to enlist volunteers and mentors. Wheat also worries that news of dark-skinned refugees falling into violent crime won't be well received, especially in America's post-Sept. 11 political climate.

But shining a light on the troubling cases could be critical to helping the refugees, says Apuk Ayuel, who serves as deputy spokeswoman for the newly established Lost Boys and Girls of Sudan, a nonprofit support group based in Los Angeles. Ayuel, 24, fled Sudan with her mother and arrived in Houston in 1996. She currently studies political science at the University of Texas at Arlington. "It seems like the way it's depicted is that every single Lost Boy has gone through -- that their situation is all equal, that all of them are getting educations," she says. "But there are a lot of people who are falling through the cracks. Their deeper stories are not being told."

Some of those stories involve dozens of Lost Boys who have been victimized themselves. Violent crime -- often in racially charged circumstances -- including assault, robbery and murder, has led to the deaths of at least four Lost Boys. They have also been involved in a rash of car accidents. Many Lost Boys saw their first cars just a few years ago and so have little driving experience; according to Wheat, more than two dozen had serious accidents in Arizona alone in 2004, including two fatalities.

Wheat says she knows of at least a dozen around the country who've attempted suicide.

While the details of various tragic cases remain murky, researchers see at least one clear thread tying them all together: trauma-related mental illness, mostly left untreated. David Berceli is a trauma therapist and founder of Trauma Recovery Assessment and Prevention Services who worked in Sudan between 2001 and 2004. Berceli, who counseled a group at the Arizona Lost Boys Center in July on post-traumatic stress disorder, says he's troubled, but not surprised by the pattern of incidents. "With people who have been put through years of life-and-death experiences, untreated fear and anger can develop into hatred and rage," he says. "It becomes an uncontrollable energy."

In June, Dr. Paul Geltman, a professor of pediatrics at the Boston University School of Medicine, published a study measuring the assimilation and well-being of 304 Lost Boys who arrived as minors in the U.S. from late 2000 to early 2001. While many fared relatively well, the study concludes that 20 percent of them suffer from PTSD.

Geltman says the rate of PTSD does not necessarily go beyond "what would be expected" of a traumatized refugee population. At the same time, he adds, he finds it remarkable that the prevalence of PTSD isn't higher. "I'd love the opportunity to do a large assessment of the older Lost Boys for comparison," he says. He notes that the problems of the older Lost Boys are probably "much greater" and would amount to greater levels of dysfunction, considering they've received less attention and support, and fewer services, than the minors. But even the minors, Geltman says, have not necessarily received the mental health help they've needed. As a result, his report concludes, the Lost Boys face lasting difficulties in being integrated into U.S. society.

Advocates, including Sudanese who have become leaders among the refugee community, share that view. According to Ayuel, many of the Lost Boys still suffer nightmares about the horrors they witnessed and endured. "They're normal most of the time, but they'll have the same nightmares over and over," she says. "There are some people in the community of Lost Boys and Girls who will say, 'Yeah, they're a little crazy.'" Ayuel says therapy is a concept as foreign to the Sudanese natives as refrigerators and fast-food restaurants once were. In fact, therapy is taboo to them.

Peter Deng (no relation to Jany; the name Deng means "rain" and is common in Sudan) found his way to Phoenix in 2001. When he arrived, he recalls, "I was thinking about food." During his nine years in a refugee camp in Kenya, he ate food provided by American relief agencies. "So I was thinking that America is a good country," he says. "Maybe if I go there I will make money; I will go to school."

In his first year in Phoenix, Peter was beaten up, carjacked and wrongly accused of fathering a child. He was fined $1,200 for driving without a license or insurance, which he had no idea he needed. He learned about the U.S. court system when he had to file a restraining order against a former girlfriend, who threatened him by saying, "You are just a refugee here in America. I can kill you." These days, Peter rarely goes out in public, especially at night, and he says he fears going to jail. "If I go to public places, the mall or a club, somebody might hurt me for that," he says, seated inside the Arizona center one afternoon.

Peter has received important assistance from the center, which helped him find a job as a file clerk for a company that sells concert tickets. Located across the street from the state capitol in a dodgy part of downtown Phoenix, the center shares a parking lot with a plastics recycling plant. Sudanese folk art and black-and-white portraits of Lost Boys at the Kakuma refugee camp add touches of familiarity to a place that offers help with foreign struggles like disconnected phone lines, eviction notices and shopping for groceries and clothes. (Lost Boys in Phoenix, according to Wheat, have been bilked for thousands of dollars by disreputable companies.) The center has partnered with Target, PetSmart, Phoenix's Sky Harbor airport and other businesses to arrange some 150 jobs for Lost Boys.

Peter earns $8.50 an hour in his clerk job, and works on his skills at the center's computer lab in his spare time. He watches a lot of television and movies, citing "Rush Hour" as a favorite film. Like many of his brothers, he says he wants to earn enough money to move back home to Sudan, find his missing family, marry and help rebuild the war-ravaged country. For now, Peter remains a homebody, struggling to make it day to day in Phoenix.

Jany, the center's outreach coordinator, shares Peter's ambitions, as do a great majority of their brothers, of helping to rebuild Sudan. These days, of course, the country faces a grave crisis in the western region of Darfur, where genocide at the hands of the notorious government-backed Janjaweed militias has created a new generation of physically and psychologically brutalized refugees. To date, the U.S. government has not formally resettled any of them here.

Jany points out that the prospect for peace darkened considerably on July 30, when longtime southern Sudanese rebel leader and newly elected Vice President John Garang died in a helicopter crash, plunging the country's fragile peace into an unknown future -- and hitting the Lost Boys community across America with a new wave of grief and fear. "It's a huge blow," Jany says. He adds that many Sudanese people don't believe Garang's death was an accident, and fears that the Sudanese regime is going to kill more of his community's leaders back home. "It's on everybody's mind," Jany says.

The plight of his fellow refugees in America also continues to weigh heavily on him. Jany, who plans to graduate next May from Arizona State University with a bachelor's degree in social work, says he loves his work counseling his brothers and helping them to find and keep jobs. But cultural differences, he acknowledges, continue to exacerbate the Lost Boys' problems. In Sudan, he says, young people don't trust police, who regularly kill civilians. "We were taught to fight our own battles," Jany says. So it's no surprise, he continues, that many Lost Boys in America are wary of police and governmental authorities.

Some Lost Boys also have had trouble adjusting to American sexual mores. Unfamiliar with America's system of dating, Jany says, the younger men sometimes mistake friendliness for sexual interest, and so being rejected by women can stoke feelings of frustration and alienation, and even lead to violence.

Eight years after his brother's death, Jany keeps his spirits up by immersing himself in his work at the center. He is also a marathon runner, which he calls his passion and "getaway thing" -- he has qualified for next year's Boston Marathon. He says he's so busy taking care of everyone else that he sometimes doesn't look after himself enough. Jany seldom has the energy to make it through his homework after a full day of school and work. He has suffered from anemia; he collapsed last January while running a marathon.

Last December, he fell asleep behind the wheel of his car. The car flipped over three times and was totaled, but luckily Jany managed to escape without a scratch. Lately, he says, his grades have started to slip and he sometimes feels dizzy -- yet, his own training aside, he says he isn't sure what else he should do. "I'm abusing myself," he says, smiling, when asked if he thinks he might suffer from PTSD.

Aydin Bal, a researcher and doctoral candidate at Arizona State University who has worked extensively with Arizona's Lost Boys, affirms that the upbeat image of this remarkable group of survivors is authentic. In spite of a harrowing past, he says, they remain determined to fit in and succeed in America. "They have shown an enormous amount of resiliency," Bal says. "Of course they are not trying to find food or drinking water now," he says. "But they are still trying to find their past, their memory."

Unfortunately, support services for the Lost Boys are drying up. According to Wheat, if the Arizona center can't raise $250,000 before a core grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services expires on Sept. 30, the doors will close. Several Lost Boys organizations in other U.S. cities are also strapped for funds. In 2002, the federal government's Office of Refugee Resettlement cut general mental health funding, previously about $2.8 million per year, from its budget.

In the meantime, some Lost Boys in America who struggled the most with fear and grief reverted to the one way of escape they knew best. Earlier this year, a 23-year-old Lost Boy, diagnosed with schizophrenia and convinced that people wanted to kill him, disappeared from his home in Syracuse. By June, he'd wandered more than 2,100 miles to Mexico City. And then there was Abil, the Lost Boy who was shot and killed on the Arizona freeway. "After all the miles he walked in Africa to escape hell, he returned to walking," Wheat says. "I wonder where he was heading. I wonder if he knew."

A Texas fisherman caught a shark instead of catfish at a local lake and now he and scientists are wondering how the shark survived in freshwater. The San Antonio Express-News reports Jet Smith found the 36-inch Atlantic sharpnose shark Sunday morning. It had already died.

The shark typically lives in saltwater, hundreds of miles from Medina Lake where it was caught.

Scott Nunez, a physiologist and assistant professor of marine science at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute at Port Aransas, said he can't understand how the shark could make it to Medina Lake. That shark, he said, would be dead within minutes of entering freshwater.

Diver Missing After Australia Shark Attack

A marine researcher was missing and presumed dead Wednesday after he was attacked by a shark off a popular beach near the southern Australian city of Adelaide, police said.

Two researchers from Adelaide University were diving to collect cuttlefish eggs when the shark attacked. Two other people in the research team's boat saw the shark coming and managed to haul one diver to safety, but they could not prevent the second from being attacked about 1 1/4 miles off Glenelg Beach just after 4 p.m.

"As far as determining the species of shark, it's very likely that, other than a bronze whaler shark, the great white shark is really the only large predatory shark that's capable of actually taking a diver," he told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio.

The feared species is common in the cold waters off Australia's southern coast and also was blamed for a fatal attack on an 18-year-old surfer at a beach near Glenelg in December.

The last fatal shark attack in Australian waters was reported in March, when a 20-foot great white shark tore a man in half, killing him instantly as he snorkeled off the west coast.

"These different proportions of men and women with high IQ scores are clearly worth speaking of and may go some way to explaining the greater numbers of men achieving distinctions of various kinds for which a high IQ is required, such as chess grandmasters, Fields medallists for mathematics, Nobel prizewinners and the like," he said.

The researchers acknowledge that women now outnumber men at every level of educational achievement, with the sole exception of PhD level, and conclude that the IQ difference cannot sufficiently explain gender inequalities in the workplace - where men still grossly outnumber women at the highest levels. The paper will argue that there is evidence that at the same level of IQ women are able to "achieve more" than men, "possibly because they are more conscientious and better adapted to sustained periods of hard work". And it will cite a previous study has concluded that IQs in the region of 125 are adequate to "ascend to all levels in the labour market".

"The small male advantage in IQ is, therefore, likely to be of most significance for tasks of high complexity," said Dr Irwing.

Professor Lynn has been accused of racism over his theories and has also been criticised for receiving funding from the New York-based Pioneer Fund, which was said to have had Nazi connections in the 1930s. He also forecast that genetic engineering combined with natural trends would turn the advanced and the developing countries into two worlds - one a stable, rich society of intelligent individuals, the other populated by people of low IQ and beset by poverty and famine.

PROVO - Brian Rust prefers a natural high over anything he would get from a beer keg. So the Brigham Young University senior is proud his school has retained its rank as the nation's top "stone cold sober school."

Rust can appreciate another kudo for BYU as well.

This year, the Provo school owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints also ranked as having the "most religious students," according to the latest Princeton Review survey. "Being stone cold sober and the most religious mean BYU has a family atmosphere," the father of a 3-month-old daughter said.

Rust says his involvement in the arts allows him to get a different kind of high. "We're drunk on life," added sophomore Ellen Bryan of Florida. "You don't have to be drunk to have fun." BYU's rankings and those of other colleges and universities are in the 2006 edition of The Princeton Review's "The Best 361 Colleges," which hit bookstores this week. The report evaluates lifestyles on college campuses, ranking schools for their partying atmospheres, fraternity and sorority scenes and fan support for sports teams.

Recently, the small city of Provo, Utah, acquired a big distinction: According to a study published this month, it is the most conservative city in America.

Based on the voting patterns of 237 major urban centers across the country, researchers at the left-leaning Bay Area Center for Voting Research determined that Provo had the highest proportion of voters who supported George Bush or other conservative candidates.

Though a voting pattern may not be absolute proof of a city's fundamental character, Provo is clearly a different kind of place than the liberal, Jewish bastions of New York, Boston and Los Angeles: 88.5% of its 100,000 residents identify as white; its major employer is the Mormon-run Brigham Young University, and last fall, when liberal filmmaker Michael Moore was invited to speak at nearby Utah Valley State College, alumnae threatened to cancel their donations to the school.

In search of the newly identified rare species -- the Provo liberal -- the Forward went looking in an obvious place: the Jewish community. After calls to several rabbis and the Jewish community center in nearby Salt Lake City, our hunch was confirmed. Most of Provo's Jews are left leaning. The hitch: There only seem to be about a dozen of them.

"The only Jewish life in Provo that I know of is my own," said Jean Yael Allen, 57, who converted to Judaism from Mormonism after moving to New York City in the 1970s.

Although Utah as a whole is home to an estimated 3,500 to 4,000 Jews, about 80% live in Salt Lake City, with most of the remainder in nearby Ogden or Park City, the ski town that hosts the Sundance Film Festival. The state's earliest Jews arrived during the 19th century as gold miners, fur traders or itinerant merchants, according to Eileen Hallet Stone, author of "A Homeland in the West: Utah Jews Remember," and the few families who settled in outposts like Provo did so for economic reasons, e.g., owning a store. Today, only a handful of Jews live in Provo, or work there, mainly for Brigham Young University or at one of several technology firms.

Salt Lake City has been growing in diversity and Jewish life in recent years; Mormons now make up less than half the city's population. The current mayor, Rocky Anderson, is a Democrat, and the city has several synagogues and a JCC that opened in 2001. Jews familiar with Provo said it remains a place where they are a tiny and, in some ways, isolated minority.

It's "hardcore Mormon territory," said Alvin Segelman, a retired scientist who moved in 1990 from Piscataway, N.J., to Orem, Provo's next-door neighbor, to take a position with a manufacturer of herbal supplements. "I think I have about a dozen Books of Mormon here that were given to me when I came out. Most people that I met in the beginning had never met a Jewish person." Segelman added that some members of the Mormon Church even tried to convert him and his wife. "After a couple of years when it became apparent to these people around here that we weren't going to convert," he said, "the relationships cooled very quickly."

But along with this tension, Hallet Stone said, is a profound respect that Mormons traditionally have for the Jewish religion, and their sense of a sacred bond with the Jews. According to church theology, the Mormons are descended from a lost tribe of Israel.

"I grew up with the belief that... the Jews are our cousins," agreed Allen, the woman who converted from Mormonism to Judaism. "I had a sister that joined the Episcopal Church and that was much harder for [my family]."

Allen, who converted as a college student at New York University, returned to Provo nearly three years ago to care for her ailing mother, but over the last few years, she said, she has had only a handful of informal encounters with other Jews in the area, such as the time she chatted in the coffee shop with a Jewish man who was married to a Mormon, or when she ran into a group of Israelis at the mall. She spends the Sabbath in Salt Lake City.

Nancy White, 61, who grew up in the only Jewish family in Provo during the post-war era, said she has fond memories of a bucolic childhood in small-town America. Her father, Philip Perlman, ran a scrap-metal business and was the first non-Mormon elected to Provo's city council. She herself had "great friends" there and was elected president of a high school sorority.

Still, White said, people didn't understand her religion, and seemed content with an unspoken "don't ask, don't tell" policy about Judaism. The day after she graduated from high school, her father moved the entire family to Salt Lake City so that she could meet a nice Jewish boy. She met him in synagogue. He was from Brooklyn.

Surgeon says deport illegal immigrants after treatment

BURLEY - A Burley surgeon wants Mini-Cassia to put some teeth in indigent medical programs in both counties - teeth that would bite illegal aliens who seek medical help but never return for follow-up care or pay for the service.

Dr. Joseph Petersen told Minidoka County commissioners Monday that both hospitals, Cassia Regional Medical Center and Minidoka Memorial Hospital, should require illegal aliens to be deported once they are either healed or released from hospital care. He said this would mean a reduction of serious injuries left without follow-up in both counties.

"These people come in after they've gotten into a drunken brawl and get emergency treatment, then we never see them again," Petersen said. "It ends up on the county indigent rolls when no one gets paid, and we need to follow up on the injuries, too."

Petersen suggested that any emergency case resulting from drunkenness or fights require the victim to provide proof of legal status and a name of an employer.

"I know we have HIPPA, but the fact of the matter is that when someone comes in with a knife wound, that is a felony and there is no such thing as rights to privacy in such situations," Petersen said.

"We need to have those who are in the country illegally know that if they aren't willing to have their cases followed up, then the option will be to be deported back to Mexico once they've been treated and are ready to leave the hospital."

County Clerk Duane Smith said the hospital has not been willing to crack down on document issues because of their status as a service organization, but Petersen said illegal activities should be reported.

He suggested the counties once again attempt to take the issue to the Legislature. A bill posed last year would have placed liability on employers for a worker's legal status violations, but it was killed before it got through committee.

Commissioner Marvin Bingham said he thought it was because the idea of placing liability on farmers was unpopular.

"I don't think it's a good idea to do that because then those people won't get any treatment and we'll end up having them in the emergency rooms in worse condition," Commissioner Dan Stapelman said.

Petersen said he thought such a plan would send them elsewhere to Twin Falls, Jerome or American Falls, for treatment if they know they may get deported by seeking care at the local hospitals.

Petersen said he was not concerned about a status issue in every case, but expressly when fights or other illegal activity are associated with the injuries.

Commissioners agreed the issue could be discussed during the counties' next combined meeting.

President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela hit back vigorously at calls by an ally of President George Bush for his assassination by offering cheap petrol to the poor of the US at a time of soaring fuel prices. In a typically robust response to remarks by the US televangelist Pat Robertson, Mr Chávez compared his detractors to the "rather mad dogs with rabies" from Cervantes' Don Quixote, and unveiled his plans to use Venezuela's energy reserves as a political tool.

"We want to sell gasoline and heating fuel directly to poor communities in the United States," he said.

Mr Robertson's remarks have threatened to inflame tension between the US and one of its main oil suppliers. Yesterday the religious broadcaster apologised for his remarks. "Is it right to call for assassination? No, and I apologise for that statement. I spoke in frustration that we should accommodate the man who thinks the US is out to kill him," he said.

In a TV broadcast on Monday, he said: "If he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it." Yesterday Mr Robertson initially said his comments had been misinterpreted, but went on to add that kidnapping Mr Chávez might be a better idea. "I said our special forces could take him out. Take him out could be a number of things, including kidnapping."

The Bush administration tried to distance itself from Mr Robertson's views without upsetting the large Christian fundamentalist wing which the veteran evangelist represents. A State Department spokesman said assassination was not part of government policy. "He's a private citizen," Donald Rumsfeld, the defence secretary, said of Mr Robertson. "Private citizens say all kinds of things all the time. If they're not agitating against the jewline, we don't care."

San Diego attorney James McElroy -- known for his iconoclastic quest to help an atheist remove the Mt. Soledad War Veterans Memorial cross overlooking the Pacific Ocean and his litigious attacks on pro-lifers -- is also board chairman of the Montgomery, Ala.-based Southern Poverty Law Center, which recently won a lawsuit resulting in the transfer of an Arizona ranch from its American owner to two Salvadoran illegal aliens.

Camp Thunderbird, a 70-acre ranch located in Douglas, Ariz., about two miles from the Mexican border and formerly owned by Ranch Rescue as a training ground for Americans to help provide security for border-area ranchers, was turned over last week to trespassers Fatima Leiva and Edwin Mancía.

According to a press release on the Southern Poverty Law Center website, "In April the Center obtained a pair of judgments totaling $1 million against [Casey] Nethercott and Torre John 'Jack' Foote, another Ranch Rescue member. Those awards came six months after a $350,000 judgment in the same case and coincide with a $100,000 out-of-court settlement with Texas rancher Joe Sutton. Sutton had invited the anti-immigration group to his property to repel Latinos who regularly cross his land."

According to the New York Times, Mancía and Leiva were caught on Sutton's Hebbronville, Tex., ranch "in March 2003 by Mr. Nethercott and other members of Ranch Rescue. The two immigrants later accused Mr. Nethercott of threatening them and of hitting Mr. Mancía with a pistol, charges that Mr. Nethercott denied. The immigrants also said the group gave them cookies, water and a blanket and let them go after an hour or so.

"The Salvadorans testified against Mr. Nethercott when he was tried by Texas prosecutors. The jury deadlocked on a charge of pistol-whipping but convicted Mr. Nethercott, who had previously served time in California for assault, of gun possession, which is illegal for a felon. He is now serving a five-year sentence in a Texas prison."

The article quotes Southern Poverty Law Center co-founder Morris Dees as saying, "Certainly it's poetic justice that these undocumented workers own this land." The case has sparked outrage throughout the United States, including recent tirades by nationally syndicated radio talk-show host Michael Savage and others. McElroy has chaired the SPLC board since 2003. He describes his initial meeting with Dees this way:

"By sheer coincidence, Morris Dees was in San Diego working on the Tom Metzger case," recalls McElroy, referring to the Center's landmark lawsuit against Metzger and his hate group, White Aryan Resistance (WAR). "I heard he was in the same office building where I was working. I wanted to introduce myself to him, so I strolled down and said hello. I told him, 'I know this is a Portland case, but if you need any help in San Diego, let me know.'"

McElroy's bio on the SPLC website continues:

Dees was in San Diego to take Metzger's deposition in the case that ultimately resulted in a $12.5 million judgment against Metzger and WAR. The Center filed the suit on behalf of the family of Mulugeta Seraw, an Ethiopian student killed in 1988 by a Portland, Ore., skinhead gang trained in WAR's methods. ...

In the weeks and years after that meeting, McElroy's role in the Metzger case grew. When the case was over, he assumed responsibility for seizing Metzger's assets and making sure they got to Seraw's family, including his son, Henock, in Ethiopia. In the end, the funds from the settlement ensured Henock would have an American education, paid for by Tom Metzger.

In 1996, McElroy joined the Center's board of directors. Four years later, he assisted the Center in Keenan vs. Aryan Nations in Idaho, which resulted in a $6.3 million judgment against the Aryan Nations and its founder, Richard Butler. In 2003, he was elected board chairman."

An Illinois native and graduate of the Catholic University of San Diego Law School, McElroy is well-known in San Diego pro-life circles for targeting Christians who minister to abortion-minded women in front of Planned Parenthood abortion clinics, for thwarting efforts to compel the abortion giant to report suspected cases of child sexual molestation and for threatening to financially bankrupt pro-life attorneys.

During an April 1999 speech at the University of San Diego, Dees praised McElroy, calling him "a very courageous lawyer here in this town." Dees also recalled his receipt of an honorary doctorate of law from the school a few years earlier and praised the university for its "strong religious base." USD permits "gay pride" groups on campus and regularly hosts heterodox pro-homosexual and pro-abortion-rights speakers.

McElroy's Southern Poverty Law Center biography states he "has also worked with Planned Parenthood and other family planning clinics to protect patients, staff and doctors from violence. In 1994, Lt. Governor Leo McCarthy appointed McElroy to the State Commission on the Prevention of Hate Violence. He has testified before various congressional committees on hate-crimes legislation, taught courses to lawyers on how to prosecute civil hate-crimes cases and has published a collection of judgments in civil rights cases.

"McElroy has received many awards for his work. In 1994, the Anti-Defamation League recognized his pro bono work by giving him its National Civil Rights Achievement Award. In 1995, he received the Margaret Sanger Award given by Planned Parenthood for his work on behalf of women's rights."

Another San Diego abortion provider, the now-defunct Womancare Health Center, "recognized McElroy in 1996 for 'outstanding work in protecting the rights of women,' and in 2004, the San Diego County Bar Association recognized McElroy as its Outstanding Attorney of the Year."

More recently, McElroy has gained national attention by assisting atheist Philip Paulson in his lawsuit to remove the Mt. Soledad Cross, a 43-foot high, 52-year-old cross overlooking the Pacific Ocean dedicated to American soldiers who fought and died for the United States during the Korean War.

After 15 years of adverse court rulings, more than 75 percent of San Diegans who came to the polls last month voted to keep the Mt. Soledad Cross as it is, where it is. Yet, before and since that vote, McElroy has made several attempts to thwart the will of the people. In June, he filed a lawsuit against five San Diego-area personalities and backers of the cross initiative, including well-known radio talk-show hosts Roger Hedgecock and Rick Roberts, over the proposed wording of the ballot initiative.

Just days before the historical vote, McElroy also sought -- and won -- a judicial decision to change the ballot majority from a simple majority to a super two-thirds majority. The voters passed the initiative overwhelmingly, exceeding the higher threshold sought by McElroy. Despite this victory, additional state and federal court cases brought by the ACLU attorney challenging the constitutionality of the cross and the July 26 ballot measure are scheduled to be heard in October.

Like much of the United States at the time, racial tensions in James McElroy's Illinois hometown ran high during the civil rights era. Many of his friends and family were either neutral or hostile to the Civil Rights Movement, leaving McElroy, now chairman of the Center's board of directors, to look to figures like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Julian Bond and the Freedom Riders for inspiration.

That inspiration led to a number of early activist efforts for McElroy. Many of his friends turned against him one day in high school when he decided to join dozens of his fellow students in a walkout to protest a racial incident at the school. He carried that activism to the University of Illinois, where he was known for engaging members of the Ku Klux Klan in debates at a campus bar.

Ultimately, it was the early inspiration from the foot soldiers of the Civil Rights Movement and their pursuit of justice and equality that led McElroy to a career in law. It also led to his eventual relationship with the Center, which began almost by accident 15 years ago in a San Diego office building.

In addition to his work for the Center, McElroy has spent more than 25 years taking on civil rights cases in San Diego.

In 2000, the University of San Diego law school graduate successfully represented a black Camp Pendleton Marine brutally beaten and left a quadriplegic by white supremacists. The case ended in a $1.2 million settlement against some defendants and a $9 million verdict against the main perpetrator.

McElroy has also worked with Planned Parenthood and other family planning clinics to protect patients, staff and doctors from violence. In 1994, Lt. Governor Leo McCarthy appointed McElroy to the State Commission on the Prevention of Hate Violence. He has testified before various congressional committees on hate crimes legislation, taught courses to lawyers on how to prosecute civil hate crimes cases and has published on the collection of judgments in civil rights cases.

"I am a very lucky lawyer in that I get to do a lot of cases that are of great public interest and of great personal interest to me and my staff," says McElroy. "But it seems the more interesting and more important they are, the more likely they are to be pro bono cases. I tell other lawyers that must be an inverse relationship between how much you get paid and the satisfaction you get from handling a particular case."

McElroy has received many awards for his work. In 1994, the Anti-Defamation League recognized his pro bono work by giving him its National Civil Rights Achievement Award. In 1995, he received the Margaret Sanger Award given by Planned Parenthood for his work on behalf of women's rights.

Womancare Health Center recognized McElroy in 1996 for "outstanding work in protecting the rights of women," and in 2004, the San Diego County Bar Association recognized McElroy as its Outstanding Attorney of the Year.

We are writing to strongly urge that the authorities in Belarus take urgent steps to address the problem of anti-Semitism. We do so following the horrifying news that on Tuesday, August 16th, the memorial in Minsk to Jewish victims of the Holocaust -- known as the "Yama" memorial -- was attacked and defaced by vandals.

This is the third time that the "Yama" memorial has been targeted by anti-Semitic thugs. Moreover, in the last two years, there have been several instances of vandals defacing and damaging Jewish sites, including cemeteries and memorials. We are not aware that any of the individuals involved in carrying out these acts have been either fined or jailed.

It is imperative that the authorities in Belarus make clear that such appalling acts are not manifestations of anti-social hooliganism, but are rather the work of anti-Semites who aim to intimidate the small Jewish community in Belarus. The authorities must also ensure that those responsible for the vandalism of the "Yama" memorial, and for any other attacks on Jews or Jewish property, are prosecuted for their crimes.

According to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center is a driving force behind the churches' anti-Israel divestment campaigns, actively promoting divestment through speakers and documents that provide a blueprint for churches to use divestment as a tool to pressure Israel.

"The Sabeel Center has long played a behind-the-scenes role in encouraging churches to adopt divestment as a tool to pressure Israel," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "Leaders of the mainline Protestant denominations have routinely welcomed Sabeel leaders as guests at conventions and national meetings, and the influence of Sabeel in advocating for divestment is indisputable, however out of sync their rhetoric is with the people in the pews. Sabeel is the engine that is driving the divestment campaign."

Earlier this year, the Sabeel Center released "A Call for Morally Responsible Investment: A Nonviolent Response to the Occupation" (April 2005). The document offers Protestant leadership a handbook on the justification and implementation of a divestment from Israel plan.

"The Sabeel document artfully claims morality and responsibility for its irresponsible and amoral accusations against Israel," said Rabbi Gary Bretton-Granatoor, ADL Director of Interfaith Affairs. "It completely ignores the efforts Israel has made to attain peace, and fails to recognize the terrorism and violence perpetrated by Palestinians aimed at destroying the State of Israel."

India: Illuminati Media as Culture Killer

When the first American music videos and popular TV shows began appearing in Indian homes in the early 1990s thanks to satellite and cable, many pundits predicted Indian society would never be the same. For the first time, young Indian women saw a regular dose of sexy, scantily clad divas shimmying. Female viewers also saw independent, successful women -- think Ally McBeal -- and fun, sensitive guys a la Friends. Sex and divorce were openly discussed in these TV imports and couples kissed passionately -- then still a taboo in Indian TV shows and movies.

Indeed, the impact on younger generations of Indian women has been profound. Whereas Indian women traditionally have been submissive to parents and husbands and valued frugality and modesty, a number of sociological studies show that young Indian females now prize financial independence, freedom to decide when to marry and have children, and glamorous careers (see BW, 8/22/05, "A Thousand Chinese Desires Bloom").

TOMORROW'S BUYERS. "A generation back, women would sacrifice themselves and believed in saving," says Nisha Singhania, senior strategic planning director of Grey Worldwide India. "Today, it is spend, spend, spend. It is O.K. for a woman to want something for herself, and people will accept it if she goes out into a man's world making a statement."

Because today's young women are the key consumer group of tomorrow, these shifts have big implications for marketing companies. And the trends come out clearly in two recent studies by Grey Global Group. One study examined 3,400 unmarried women aged 19-22 of different income and social levels. Altogether, the project involved 40 focus groups in five large metro areas and five smaller cities.

In some cases, the researchers lived with the women for a while to study them more closely. The researchers supplemented this data with interviews of journalists, teachers, and psychologists.

Among the findings:

-- Guilt-free materialism. Fifty-one percent of young single women in major metro areas say it's necessary to have a big house and big car to be happy. In smaller cities, 86% agreed with this statement. "This shows that the less women have, the greater are their aspirations," says Singhania.

One woman interviewed was making just $200 a year but said she wants to own a jet plane. "A typical comment in recent interviews was, 'I want money, fame and success,'" says Singhania.

-- Parental ties. Traditionally, parents regarded girls as somebody else's future property. They arranged marriages for their daughters, and then the daughters would go away and take care of their in-laws, so parents needed and doted on sons. "As a girl, you never spoke to your parents. They spoke to you," Singhania says.

But today's young women are rebelling against that. Sixty-seven percent say they plan to take care of their parents into their old age -- and that means they need money.

Unilever (NYSE:UL - News) played on that sentiment with a recent controversial -- but successful -- ad for its Fair and Lovely line of beauty products. A daughter came home and found that her parents had no sugar for coffee because they couldn't afford it. She became an airline hostess after using the Fair and Lovely products to make her beautiful. She then visited her parents and took them to a first-class restaurant.

-- Marital freedom. Now many women say they'll marry when ready -- not when their parents decide to marry them off. Sixty-five percent say dating is essential, and they also want to become financially independent before they marry. More than three-quarters -- 76% -- say they want to maintain that independence afterward. Sixty percent say they'll decide how to spend their own salaries.

What's more, 76% say they'll decide when to have children. "They now regard this as the woman's decision completely," observes Singhania. In big metro areas, 24% say they never want children, and that number reaches 40% in smaller cities.

-- Individualism. Female role models in Indian culture used to personify perfection, Singhania says. Now, 62% of girls say it's O.K. if they have faults and that people see them. "They don't want to be seen as Mrs. Perfect," she says. "Popular characters are Phoebe of Friends and Ally McBeal. They like women who commit blunders."

-- Careerism. A decade ago, most young women saw themselves as housewives. After that, most said they wanted to be teachers or doctors. "If they had a profession at all, it had to be a noble cause," Singhania says. "Now, it is about glamour, money, and fame."

A surprising 45% of young single females say they would like to be journalists. Singhania says that's largely because prominent female journalists, especially TV reporters, are seen as very glamorous.

Another 39% say they would like to be managers, 38% are interested in design, and 20% think they want to be teachers. Interestingly, 13% say they would like to be in the military. The percentage of those saying they want to be a full-time housewife was minuscule.

-- Modern husbands. "The relationship with the husband used to be one of awe," Singhania says. "Now, women want a partner and a relationship of equals. They want to marry a man like Greg of Dharma and Greg or Chandler of Friends." A recent Whirlpool (NYSE:WHR - News) ad shows a man washing the family clothes before his wife comes home from work, while a Samsung home-appliance ad shows a husband and wife cooking together.

For Indian society, the changes in young women's outlook on life is revolutionary. For marketers, they offer interesting new opportunities to exploit.

A Jewish group has filed a complaint to the University of Ottawa against one of its professors after the discovery of content on his website that blames Jews for the terrorist attacks on the United States, and claims the numbers who died at Auschwitz are exaggerated.

The website, http://www.globalresearch.ca, also reprints articles from other writers that accuse Jews of controlling the U.S. media and masterminding the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Other postings suggest Israel, the U.S. and Britain are the real perpetrators of the recent attacks on London.

The site, which is not hosted by the university, is run by Michel Chossudovsky, a controversial left-leaning economist, and came to the attention of B'nai Brith Canada after public complaints to the advocacy group and the Citizen.

"The material on the site is full of wild conspiracy theories that go so far as to accuse Israel, America and Britain of being behind the recent terrorist bombings in London," said Frank Dimant, executive vice-president of B'nai Brith Canada. "They echo the age-old anti-Semitic expressions that abound in the Arab world, which blame the Jews for everything from 9/11 to the more recent tsunami disaster."

The organization singles out a discussion forum, moderated by Mr. Chossudovsky, that features a subject heading called "Some Articles On The Truth of the Holocaust." The messages have titles such as "Jewish Lies of Omission (about the 'Holocaust')," "Jewish Hate Responsible For Largest Mass Killing at Dachau," and "Did Jews Frame the Arabs for 9/11?"

Another posting suggests the number of Jews who died at Auschwitz during the Second World War is inflated.

None of the postings is written by Mr. Chossudovsky himself.

Under Canadian law, website owners can be liable for material they knowingly post, even if they haven't produced it themselves.

"I know this isn't his own writing, but he's certainly got a responsibility for the website, which, I checked, is registered in his name," said Anita Bromberg, B'nai Brith's legal counsel and human rights co-ordinator.

The site identifies Mr. Chossudovsky as the director of the Centre for Research on Globalization and editor of globalresearch.ca. His wife, Micheline Ladouceur, is listed as associate editor. They manages the site out of Montreal.

The site does not mention Mr. Chossudovsky's position at the university, nor does his website at the U of O refer to globalresearch.ca. However, an Internet search of Mr. Chossudovsky's name shows he is listed as an adviser for a Swedish-based group called the Transnational Foundation for Peace and Future Research. Its website contains a biography of Mr. Chossudovsky, his contact information at the U of O and a link to globalresearch.ca.

When reached in South Korea, where he is on a research trip, Mr. Chossudovsky said the offending messages were removed from the forum after he was made aware of them by the Citizen.

But as of late yesterday, some of the postings remain on the site. A discussion thread about 9/11, contained a message that casts doubt on the Auschwitz death count. Other postings under a forum on globalization have titles such as "The Hilarious Auschwitz Story" and "The HolyCo$t Lie is Finished."

Mr. Chossudovsky indicated that despite monitoring the forum "periodically," he did not know about the inflammatory messages, even though they had been posted since March. He added that while he has received complaints before about offensive content on the site, the volume of messages on the forum makes it difficult for him to control what is posted.

"We don't choose the articles that go up, and when we see that there are texts which are racist or hateful, we do, to the best of our abilities, try to remove them."

Mr. Chossudovsky described himself as being of Jewish descent, and said he has relatives who were Holocaust victims. "I'm the first person to withdraw any kind of hate material directed against the Jewish people."

He went on to defend the reprinted articles that have also sparked complaints, saying they are legitimate commentary representing views that are "anti-Zionist, not anti-Semitic."

"It's an analysis of Israeli policy which we don't support," said Mr. Chossudovsky, an antiwar commentator and an outspoken critic of U.S. and Israeli policies.

He also noted the site contains a disclaimer saying the articles posted don't necessarily reflect his views as editor.

Jewish students at the University of Ottawa said they have so far received no complaints about the site, but maintain Mr. Chossudovsky has not gone far enough to ensure the website is free of material they consider offensive.

"As an organizer of the site, especially if he is of Jewish descent and his family has gone through the atrocities of the Holocaust, he should take a more active interest in what is posted and published on the site," said Nicole Advocat, an executive member of the university's Jewish Students Association.

Ms. Advocat, a second-year international relations major, worries other students will stumble on to the site.

"Students will come here looking for research information on the topic of globalization. I know as a globalization student, I'm often looking for different sites that can help me find articles and relevant information. And for students who aren't educated about the Holocaust, they could look at this information and say, 'This is the truth.' "

Ms. Bromberg said despite Mr. Chossudovsky's efforts to distance the website from the university, there is a chance students could happen upon it.

"The bottom line is, he is a professor at a leading university, which gives him credibility. ... It worries me what students, who may be very ill-equipped, face. He has an obligation as a professor towards the young minds he teaches."

B'nai Brith is monitoring the website closely, and putting pressure on the U of O to act. "His connection with the university might put some responsibility on the university to hold him to a certain standard of acceptable civil discourse," said Ms. Bromberg.

A U of O spokesman said the university has not yet received a complaint from B'nai Brith, and is not prepared to intervene. "Until we're approached, it's something that we just don't see a role for us to be involved in," said Bob LeDrew.

A specialist in globalization and the economics of developing countries, Mr. Chossudovsky, 59, has a reputation for producing radical critiques often out of step with the views of his colleagues.

Since 1968, when he left his native Switzerland to take a position at the U of O, Mr. Chossudovsky has produced research that keeps him on the margins of mainstream academia, but wins praise from anti-establishment intellectuals such as Noam Chomsky.

While he is rarely quoted in mainstream academic journals, Mr. Chossudovsky is a popular figure among anti-globalization activists, and is widely quoted in newspapers. He writes regularly for the French-language monthly Le Monde diplomatique, and his books, published by a small printing house in Britain, have been translated into 11 languages.

Students who take his courses rave about his unorthodox views, going so far as to dub him "Canada's Chomsky."

More recently, Mr. Chossudovsky's research has turned his attention to terrorism. He has written articles accusing the U.S. of plotting to conquer the world with Britain and Israel, and suggesting Osama bin Laden is a CIA asset.

A forthcoming book entitled America's "War on Terrorism" In the Wake of 9/11 is described on globalresearch.ca as an expose that "blows away the smokescreen, put up by the mainstream media, that 9/11 was an 'intelligence failure.' "

But even sympathetic colleagues familiar with his work admit they are uncomfortable with many of his ideas.

"Among people who work on terrorism, there certainly is not much that resembles his work," said Michael Dartnell, a political scientist at York University. "The thing that disturbs me about what he's doing is there is a conspiratorial element to it. And I can't prove or disprove it."

Nonetheless, added Mr. Dartnell, Mr. Chossudovsky's ideas reflect a public sentiment that is suspicious of the motives of government.

"He wants, probably for very sincere reasons, to formulate a substantive critique of what the U.S. government is doing. I'm just not really clear that he's successful in doing that."
