A MISSION to airlift some members of the Zimbabwean Jewish community to Israel is alleged to have been launched by the Jewish Agency, according to a report published in the Jewish Chronicle.

“Staff have spoken individually to every member of the 350-strong community and are believed to be making arrangements for their removal at short notice,” reports the paper.

The details of the airlift are said to be a closely guarded secret. Zimbabwe and Israel have close diplomatic ties although there is no Jewish embassy in the country.

“This weekend a rabbi will fly to Britain from South-Africa to raise funds to support the operation, the cost of which could run into hundreds of thousands of dollars,” reports the weekly newspaper.

Rabbi Moshe Silberhaft, the spiritual leader of African communities outside South Africa, said some of the older members of the Zimbabwe community were reluctant to leave, as they feel safe in the country.

He is reported as saying: “It is important to understand that this is the remnant of a once very strong community that numbered 7,500 people in its prime. Those who chose to stay feel loyal to their staff who depend on them, afraid of the struggle to adjust in a new place and really don’t want to leave.”

Ofer Dahan, the Jewish Agency’s senior envoy to southern Africa, said members of the Jewish Community were scheduled to “leave Zimbabwe soon” but did not elaborate elaborate.

According to the paper, “One prominent member of the community there, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that despite the food shortage, people feel safe.

He is reported as saying, “In terms of personal security, they feel protected. So I can understand why they are not in a rush to leave.”

Zimbabwe currently boasts three synagogues: two in Harare and one in Bulawayo with one remaining Jewish school in Harare also has one remaining Jewish school.

Hempstead, NY – An elderly Long Island dentist said he was attacked by the businessman who’s a key figure in the Israeli corruption investigation after his patient “snapped” over an argument about his tooth tab.
“The subject of money came up. I wasn’t paid for my part,” Dr. Leonard Barashick said about Morris Talansky, the star witness against Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. “One thing led to another and he just snapped, as homicidal maniacs do.”
Talansky, 75, was a no-show in Hempstead court on charges he assaulted Barashick. The judge told Talansky’s lawyer that if his client did not show up for his pending trial, he would issue an arrest warrant.
Talansky has recently testified in Israel that he gave at least $150,000 in cash to Olmert, but insisted they were not bribes.
Barashick, 84, said he worked on Talansky’s teeth for decades. He claims the relationship soured on July 5 after Talansky refused to pay for dental work and “threatened to kill me” in phone messages.
The dentist said Talansky was at one time a kind and gentle family man who helped sick people. But once he got involved with Israeli politicians and big shots, he allegedly became arrogant.
“I would call him a philanderer, a liar,” as well as a thief, said Barashick, who also claims Talansky cheated him out of $200,000 “in an insurance scheme.” He was never charged with any such scheme.
“He shoved a steel chair into me so hard it almost cost me amputation of both lower legs,” Barashick said. “I saw him pick up his fist that was as big as a kosher ham. He had me up against the wall.”
Four men in his dentist’s office in Baldwin managed to stop the attack, Barashick said.
After Talansky was arrested, the charges were reduced from felony assault to third-degree assault, a misdemeanor – because the four witnesses declined to back up Barashick’s story.
Nassau County First District Court Judge William O’Brien asked Talansky’s criminal lawyer, Anthony Collelouri, why his client did not show up for a court appearance.
Collelouri said that his client had flown back to Israel for a family wedding but was also aiding prosecutors in the Olmert case.
“How did I not hear about this . . . this intrigue?” O’Brien asked Collelouri.
After court Collelouri said that Barashick was making it all up. “He’s a very nice man who is anything but violent. He’s grandfatherly.”

Two young men attacked a Jew in a Volzhsky, Russia (Volgograd region) cafe, according to a June 18, 2008 report by the web site Jewish.ru. Oleg Polonksy, age 40, went to the cafe to eat dinner, but when he placed his keys on the table, the two men sitting nearby noticed that he had a Star of David key chain. They approached him and asked, “are you a Jew?” to which he answered in the affirmative and was savagely beaten. Mr. Polonsky is currently in the hospital recovering from his injuries. The head of the local Jewish community has appealed to the city’s mayor to oversee the investigation of the crime. Police so far have not detained any suspects.

One Catholic not afraid to name the jew: Father Tadeusz Rydzyk

WARSAW (AFP-EJP)—A Polish prosecutor has dropped a probe into allegations of anti-Semitism against a Catholic priest who slammed moves to return Jewish properties lost during World War II.

Father Tadeusz Rydzyk’s comments “did not contain elements prohibited by the law”, according to a prosecutor’s statement published Friday by several Polish dailies.

Polish law prohibits the public incitement of racial hatred, such as anti-Semitism.

Rydzyk created and heads the Catholic-nationalist Radio Maryja — known for comments with an anti-Semitic, nationalist and anti-European tone — a media school, the Nasz Dziennik (Our Daily) and the Trwam (I Endure) television station in Torun, northern Poland.

In July 2007 Polish media published a recording of Rydzyk made by students during a course at the Torun media school. In this record, he slammed Polish President Lech Kaczynski for giving in to Jewish demands for compensation for property lost after the Holocaust. The priest suggested Jews wanted to strip Poland of billions of dollars.

“You know the issue is for Poland to give (Jews) 65 billion dollars. They’ll come and will say give me that coat. Take off those trousers! Give those shoes!” Rydzyk told the students.

He also said that the Jedwabne case – a pogrom of Jews in 1941 which was established by the Polish National Institute of Remembrance as being committed by Poles, and not by Nazis as was previously believed – was used by Jews to extort 65 billion dollars from Poland. The lecture was taped in secret.

Following the publication of the records in the weekly magazine Wprost, 17 people lodged complaints with Torun’s prosecutors, demanding legal action against Rydzyk.

Israel’s ambassador to Poland David Peleg called the comments “the worst case of anti-Jewish language” Poland has seen since an anti-Semitic campaign in 1968 that drove thousands of Jews to flee the country.

Established by Rydzyk 17 years ago, Radio Maryja has more than three million, mostly elderly, regular listeners and enjoyed considerable political clout under the 2005-2007 conservative Law and Justice (PiS) government masterminded by President Kaczynski’s identical twin brother Jaroslaw.

Radio Maryja has been criticised by parts of Poland’s Catholic hierarchy.

Last year, Father Rydzyk was reprimanded by Pope Bendict XVI over the anti-Semitic broadcasts. Rome ordered Poland’s bishops to set up a watchdog body for the radio, but it apparently has had little impact and the Church has faced criticism for failing to bring Rydzyk under control.
