It has come to my attention through email friends of mine that one of your San Francisco Chronicle writers, Kim Severson, recently wrote an article about how there were "too many whites" dining out in some of San Francisco's finest restaurants.

Because I live in Alabama, and some of our cities and towns are predominantly black, I would suggest that Kim eat out at one of the finer restaurants in our cities and towns, and then rephrase her article to reflect her eating experience here.

Now, as a side thought, let me see: We have African-American and Hispanic graduation parties. There is a major magazine entitled "Ebony"; and a really dumb TV show, Beavis and Butthead, that had 2 white teenage characters in lead roles.

Suppose we had a "white" graduation party; a magazine entitled "White"; and 2 African Americans or Hispanics as the lead roles in Beavis and Butthead. What do you suppose headlines would read then?

Kim, get a life! People like you are who keep the fires of racism burning! Too bad your food was so bad you had to focus on those around you rather than enjoy your meal.

How the hell can a company be an "Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer committed to diversity" and not have any regard for race, color, etc?? I see these types of postings everywhere. That posting might be what they say, but this is what they mean:

Dear Cat Lady,

I am glad you found the movie to be such an inspiring spectacle for Aryans. NOW READ THE BOOKS! If there is anything you could recommend to your audience beyond seeing the movie, it should be just that. The books provide a very thoroughly Aryan weltanschaaung, rich both in detail and scope which are far superior to the flick. Dr. Tolkien was a master scholar in old Norse and Saxon mythology and language and his synthesis of our ancestral dreams and values into his version of "Middle Earth" (Midgard to the Norse) was a tool no less powerful in the revival of our Race than Mein Kampf. Reading both of these books as a youth fortified me against the onslaught of the jewish darkness. Tolkien's work is a MUST to those who propose to lead our Race out of the chains placed on them by the Sauron of jewery!

I will omit any detailed objections I have to Peter Jackson's muddling of Tolkien's plot or characters. It is there and those of you who are familiar with his work are aware of it. I suppose we should all just be glad that a poisonous kike like Spielburg didn't ruin it all for us. Well Dr. Tolkien certainly isn't the kike's bag. Over 20 years ago, one such little orc, Ralph Bakshi, tried to cash in on TLOTR with one of his cartoons but it was so dreadful that he lost money on the initial release. Jews literally don't have the neural structure for appreciating Aryan subtleties.

Your interpretation of orkish symbology is a trifle naive. It would be more accurate to say that Sauron and his One Ring represent jewery proper. Orcs represent races ruined by long contamination by jewery more than jewery itself. This is made clear both in the books in several places and movie, where Saruman gives a brief synopsis of the matter. (which is not in the originals but was a good departure for the sake of explanation.) Wiggers certainly are orkish enough and some of them are going to be incorrigible.

The One Ring is the true essence of judaism, representing the monotheist egomaniacal jew demon-god, Yahweh. The Three represent our traditional Aryan triune gods such as Odin-Thor-Freyr or Indra-Brahma-Agni for examples. Just as Sauron the jew forged his One to master the Three, so too did jews like Saul of Tarsus forge the false dogma of christianity to control our Three. The Three might be good enough by themselves but so long as the One exists, the Shadow of jewery can take shape again and should the Dark Lord gain posession of the One, (as is actually the case) the work of the Three will be suborned to it. There is but one cure, we must destroy the One, even if the Three should fade as a consequence. INTO THE FIRE WITH IT!

Your analysis of the character of Tolkien's fellowship races is essentially correct. You miss the sacrificial aspect of the hobbits, (Baldur) but you hadn't read the books as of the time of your movie review. Tolkien's elves, dwarves and men are truly faithful to the sorts of characters our ancestors made them out to be. He in fact used the names of a number of dwarves straight out of Norse mythology in The Hobbit.

Insofar as capitalism is a jewish contrivance, your analysis is correct. Gandalf points out in the book that the sole basis for Sauron's wisdom is desire. That is certainly jewish enough. Likewise, as that Most Aryan of Aryans, the Buddha pointed out, desire is the basis of suffering. The temptations which beset Tolkein's heros are all so based. I do take exception with your rather broad condemnation of technology. I would remind you that it was the elves who invented the "Ring technology", not Sauron and just so, we Aryans have invented all the worthwhile technology of today, even though the jew perverts it. Mastery of Nature is a fine thing, once one has mastered oneself. THAT is the proper Aryan weltanschaaung.

Jackson did pander to one aspect of jewery in his production, feminism. Tolkien didn't have elvish Xena types running about with swords in TLOTR. I didn't appreciate this bit.

Anyway, DO read Dr. T's work. You will be a better Aryan for it.

I understand that very few "conservative" websites are willing to openly name the Jew as a major culprit endeavoring to extinguish white western civilization, so VNN was created to fill that void. Certainly VNN does not hesitate to use the J-word, but seems willing to name *nothing but* Jews as the problem. That is very shortsighted.

Let me use a brief cite to make my point:

Why doesn't VNN do more to point out the treachery of the white power elite? That story on Devon st. in chicago is exactly right. One time I was waiting for my wife at Orchard Mall in a north chicago suburb, it was taking her forever to return something. I sat in the car with our kids watching all the kike-girls, gooks, etc filing in and out of the mall while she returned some trinket or makeup or something. this was the pretty side of the non-white influx to chicago.

Once she returned to our vehicle, I drove off in search of a macd's to get some quick nourishment and a lavatory... cant remember the street we went down off I94, but it's well known, and when I got out and went into the MacD's I thought I was in friggin Peshawar or something. It SMELLED AWFUL. I was amazed that I was more revolted than the typical MacD's in a city staffed by negroes... I hadnt thought that possible. The place was dirty and the bathroom unmentionable. All of this within 30 miles of the world HQ of MacD's in Oak Brook.. how pathetic.

Funny thing, in the parking lot some full-Indian blooded middle aged mexican woman was looking at a map trying to figure out where the heck she was. I was getting in the car, and she stopped me and asked me in the worst English where such and such avenue was. In my own poor Spanish I told her she was lost and far away and I wasnt sure how to get there. [I should have said, SOY LA MIGRE! DONDE ES LA CARTA VERDE! She probably would have laughed at that in this third world ghetto] She thanked me and hobbled back to her jalopy, and I sped off as quickly as possible. It seemed wierd but understandable that some mojada would sooner try and talk to a white man than all the Paks in the neighborhood.

I mentioned this sad story to all my Chicago friends, sequestered in their office buildings and segregated neighborhoods, what a shame that part of town had become, and they looked back at me with this impotent look of resignation. Alex, I think many times the struggle is less to educate the white man to racial realities than it is to awaken his fighting spirit, and sense of pride and self determination. At least it is among the white folk I know.

Ed. Note: I agree. Whites know the truth about niggers, that's why they move away from them. Jews is where the education is needed. And "education" is always overrated. For what they are, and what they've done, Jews deserve to be hated, despised, and driven out of White areas - at the least. You assume that the US policy on immigration is there for the benefit of US citizens. It's not. So you see, the open border question in "certain places" isn't applicable to the US, which is like a big free-for-all for free trade colonies to expand. Buchanan whispers the truth but too many grad-school economists on this board will LEAP OUT OF A CHAIR to strike down Buchanan because he wonders off the "free trade/globalism" script. "The Truth About Zionism

It is my understanding that Horowitz will soon respond to a reader who asked him about Zionism.

Here is an outtake from my own essay about Zionism (could not post entire essay, due to word limit):

"The left-wing U.N. condemned Zionism as a form of racism in Nov. 1975, in U.N. Res. 3379. One would think that that alone would almost settle the matter. Resolution 3379 states that the U.N. "DETERMINES that Zionism is a form of racism and racial discrimination." It also equates Zionism with the racial apartheid in White-ruled South Africa.

Many Jews have tried to claim that the U.N. in 1975 condemned a "different form" of Zionism than what they currently practice, such as the "political" variety, or possibly "cultural" Zionism instead.

As noted by Israel's High Court in 1970, there is no such thing as Israeli nationality. In Israel, "Jewish nationality" is the only status which bestows full rights on a citizen inside of Israel. This would mean, by default, that any Arab inside of Israel is not a "full" citizen with "equal" rights, according to Israel's own government.

The movement of Zionism is racist by default, because it is racially exclusive, since Jews are a race first and a religion second; and Zionism only furthers Jewish interests at the expense of non-Jews.

I find it scary that Horowitz and his Israel-first gang at FrontPage so blatantly condemn "racism," e. g. the Klan, yet support Jewish ethnic racism, known as Zionism. And it is truly racism, since "Jewish" is, again, a race [hybrid race by exclusive interbreeding for centuries] and religion, both.

Horowitz and his (many Jewish) cohorts need to come clean about what Zionism, and Israel, is really about.

Further, lest you call me an "anti-Semite," note that Arabs are also Semites, and that there are many more of them than Jews.

Its great to come back to VNN after a short new year's break. Its hard at times to visit with the extended family and try and tell them about the perils facing our people and get a bunch of blank idiotic stares.

The great thing about VNN is it helps keep truth alive. Both by reaching out to newbies and by fortifying those of us who are awakened. I am reminded after socializing with non-racist white family members, that many reasonable white folk, after hearing all of the rest of the media and society repeat the mantra racism is bad, nigs are ok, jews are our friends, etc., repeated thousands of times over, even if they may have some White Nationalist beliefs, they can be tempted to give in to the insanity and go with the flow etc. Kind of like peer pressure on a teenager to do drugs or whatever. Or more like a person at a Chi-com/Maoist indoctrination camp. Or like the traitor in the Matrix, the fantasy world promoted by the media is at times a tempting construct.

And then a little story like the Fox thing leaks out. The thing about the Israelis managing phone calls, billing, and wiretaps is a cruel wake-up call even to us who are aware of the Jewish domination of the media and government. I have to say I have been aware of the Jewish problem my entire adult life; and yet I was still suprised by the detail and extent of control in this particular area (the phone system). After years of independent study about the Jews I still keep asking myself, how did 6 or 7 million Jews and their israeli co conspirators seize control over White Christian America? And how can their control be so open and yet so taboo to discuss? Its the hardest part of our message to sell to people, because really, to the average whitey I think it [Jewish control] may seem the most implausible. Unfortunately, much of the key in understanding consists of identifying the numerous white traitors, stooges, and useful idiots who accrue large financial benefits from the current ZOG arrangements. Now the corruption is so rife, probably most of those whose efforts support the current system have no idea how destructive to our people it really is. Yet in coming to terms with this parasitic relationship that has troubled our people for nearly two millenia, we lay the foundation for our eventual liberation.

The sad thing is that they are brought into the midst of the flower of our white womanhood, and turned loose to release their animal desires on the very best, while less tv-worthy white men are kept aside as second class citizens. When these apes rape and beat or seduce any white girl foolish enough to be caught alone and drunk with them, the school covers it up. The school aides and abets them in cheating, since many if not most they are too stupid to learn enough to pass classes fairly. The school has to demonize racism, or sane white boys might just take the inspiration of the great General Bedford Forrest and put these modern day coons, scalawags, and carpet baggers in their place. So after all, its good that the football white figure head is gone, and a nigger in the place of Canute Rock ne, so now the foolish alumni can stop wasting their charitable dollars giving to a place that while it poses as lilly white is in fact equally guilty of promoting the destruction of our people.

Too bad those Holy Cross monks couldn't have been true to their vows of poverty, and never sold off ND to the ZOG system beast in the seventies. I am a Christian who came to Israel with a deep awareness--instilled by my parents and my academic background--of the horrific abuses the Church has inflicted on Jews for two millennia.

In the winter and spring of 1995, under the auspices of my organization, Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT), I visited with numerous Israelis and Palestinians involved in peace and human rights work. After meeting with grassroots organizers in the West Bank city of Hebron, we received an invitation from the mayor's office to set up a project there.

I knew before the project started in June 1995 that my knowledge of the history of Christian anti-Semitism would be both a burden and a tool. On the whole, my knowledge has been a useful tool that has helped our team in Hebron establish warm relationships with dozens of Israeli peace and human rights activists. It has helped us connect Israelis with Palestinians who are facing home demolition and ongoing harassment from Israeli soldiers and settlers. To do our work, our team has had to open ourselves to the pain and suffering that begat the pain and suffering that begat the pain and suffering ad infinitum.

But at the moment, I only feel the "burden" part. I am tired and sick at heart from what I have seen over the last two years, and I have done almost nothing for the last three days besides deal with the fallout from death threats that some Kachnik--probably at the behest of the Hebron settlers--has made against my co-workers there.

When I first sent Tikkun my reflection piece on Israel at fifty, I tried to convey my ambivalence--how I juggle my relationships with Israelis and Palestinians, my evangelical/fundamentalist upbringing, the realities of what I see, and the historical context that gave rise to Zionism.

You, Michael Lerner, told me it came across as emotionally detached.

So you want to know how I really feel about Israel after having worked for nearly seventeen months as a human rights activist in Hebron? You don't want the sion that I give in presentations to Mennonite Churches that emphasize our conflict resolution work? You don't want the version I give Jewish friends to avoid seeing that veil of pain drop across their faces? You don't want the version that I tell the children in my household so they won't grow up thinking Israelis are bad people?

Are you so sure you want to open those doors that my rage has strained against for the past two years? Are you? Well here it goes. Israel makes me want to throw things at a wall until the plaster shatters and my arms are too sore to hurl anything else. Israel makes me wish that my theology permitted me a purgatory where folks like Ariel Sharon would have to experience every bit of the pain and terror they have inflicted on their victims over the last decades. Israel makes me want to point my finger, like Emile Zola, like the prophet Nathan, at Netanyahu and his cronies, and say: "J'accuse--You are the man," as silent wraiths heap corpses of ewe lambs, slaughtered on the altar of Israeli expansionism, at his feet. God! Do you have any idea what you are asking of me, when you say you want something less detached? I have expended enormous energy to subdue my passion so that I don't repulse those who are only moderately interested in my work. I walk on eggshells so that I do not detonate the passion of others who are too involved with the conflict.

Much of what I have witnessed, I can report only with detachment: I have seen a man with his hands and feet blown off, skin boiled red, thrashing about like a seal. I have seen men picking up little bits of people stuck to asphalt, walls, and trees in Jerusalem. I have seen Israeli soldiers in Hebron beckon settlers to come over and spit on terrified young men they have detained at a checkpoint. I have seen the huge grin on the face of a man holding me up by the hair with his left hand as he drew the other hand back to punch me in the ear. From the ground I watched him run away with my camera held over his head like a football, surrounded by other settlers in white shirts and black pants. They laughed and cheered as though he had made a touch down. I have been called "Nazi"; I have been spit at times too numerous to mention. I have on many occasions had Miriam Levinger cackle at me, "Don't say I didn't warn you."

I have listened as countless soldiers and settlers who have never had a civil conversation with a Palestinian--let alone eaten with them, lived with them, babysat for them as I have--tell me all about what Arabs "are like." I have heard Israeli soldiers tell me, "you have seen nothing," when I confront them about physically abusing young Palestinian men they had detained against the wall across from our apartment. I have stood one too many times in front of tearful Palestinian women asking me "Laish? Why? Why? WHY are they doing this? What have we done?" as they nursed the bruises of their children who had been attacked by soldiers or settlers. I have listened to their sobs and wails as bulldozers plowed into their houses while Israeli soldiers laughed and cheered. My bile, my tears, well up as I write. Before I went to Hebron I lived under the illusion that houses and human bodies were solid. I didn't know they could come apart so easily.

It is better to detach. It is better to think of myself as a biological organism, made up of a finite amount of fluids, because otherwise I think my tears, my vomit, would drown the Fertile Crescent.

The year before I joined CPT, I finished a book, We Are the Pharisees, in which I examined ways the Church has used Jesus' diatribes against the Pharisees as anti-Semitic propaganda. I wrote "... until we understand our horrible history of persecuting the Jews, we cannot really talk with [Jews] on issues surrounding the state of Israel and Israeli-Palestinian relationships. Some of my friends have expressed impatience with the way Jews "use" their past persecutions in order to justify Israeli policies. I believe this is the wrong approach. As long as we refuse to listen to the Jews regarding their history, the Jews have every right to refuse to listen to us. We need to understand why Jews throughout the world crave the security that came with the founding of the State of Israel." I received my author's copies a week before I flew to Israel for the first time. As I re-read my words today, I ask myself, "Do I still believe them? Do I still believe anything I believed before the Israeli-Palestinian conflict infected me?" I am able to rise above my rage long enough to realize that, yes, my words still hold true. Even given my experiences in Hebron, I don't think there is much I would add or change.

As a Christian white European American I want to take responsibility for the injustices in the Middle East. If I can take responsibility for what has happened, that gives me a small measure of control, right? The silence roils in my stomach. I will continue. I still believe I have an obligation to follow Jesus' command that I love my enemies. Can I love Mr. Shektman, Miriam Levinger, and the anonymous Kachniks currently threatening the lives of my friends in Hebron? Yes, I can love them. They were not born hateful. I know--no, I am certain--that God loves them.

Israeli friends have told me that W.B. Yeats' "The Second Coming" has become especially meaningful to them to them in the last few years--"things fall apart; the center cannot hold."

The lines from that poem that leap out at me are, "the best lack all conviction, while the worst/Are full of passionate intensity." Is that what you meant, when you said you wanted less detachment and more passion? Because there has to be some emotional force that matches those who vociferously defend their right to treat others with contempt? What if the passion only adds to the cumulative rage mushrooming in the region? What if it makes me lose control and betray the principles of nonviolence to which I have committed my life? What if my detachment is the only thing holding me together?

ST. PETERSBURG -- Hate takes no holiday. The National Alliance, a white supremacist, anti-Semitic organization that distributed pamphlets in several northeast neighborhoods in early December, unloaded another batch over the holiday weekend in Bahama Shores, a waterfront neighborhood in southern St. Petersburg.

"It was on the front steps," said Susan Riggins, who lives on Bahama Shores Drive. "I'd heard about it in other neighborhoods. You can't help but feel how hurtful it would be to your neighbors. I went around and if I saw others, I threw them away."

The three-page tract targets minorities, especially African-Americans, and Jews, using provocative language and general references to incidences of violence. The only contact is a phone number for the organization's office in West Virginia. A taped message by the group's founder, William Pierce, describes the National Alliance as "America's foremost organization working for the long-term interests of men and women of European descent."

"It's not illegal, as long as they're not threatening anyone," said George Kajtsa, spokesman for the St. Petersburg Police Department. "But we do keep tabs on it and turn it over to an intelligence officer."

"It's so repugnant," said Linda Rogowski, who lives in Bahama Shores. "Your first instinct is to pick them up and throw them away. But do we want to do that or let people see them and confront it in their own way?"

There were no reports of fliers in nearby neighborhoods in the Pinellas Point area.

PARISThree of Israel's five leading banks are under investigation by French authorities as part of a larger, ongoing probe of a money-laundering network between France and Israel.

The network used Jewish charitable institutions and cultural institutions based in France to process illegally-acquired money.

An executive from Bank Leumi France SA is among those under investigation, alongside workers from Israel Discount Bank and the First International Bank of Israel according to recent reports. In November French officials said there were some 80 suspects in the case including six rabbis. Six people are reportedly already in jail.

"The misuse of banks by money laundering networks" is the judicial inquiry's focus said Leumi's French spokesman, noting that no charges have been placed.

The French media reported that both Israel Discount Bank and First International Bank of Israel are also under investigation by French authorities regarding their possible involvement in a money-laundering network since 1996.

A Bank Discount spokeswoman said the bank was "cooperating with [investigators] in whatever ways" they could. She denied the bank's involvement with the affair.

FIBI's spokesman denied that the bank has been under investigation.

"No one came to ask us questions," he said, adding, "We don't even have any business activities in France."

"Investigators are interested in the flow of checks from Israeli banks, including Discount Bank...passing through France," French daily Le Monde reported recently. "Large withdrawals were made from checks delivered this way."

Sources said that the Israeli banks were being checked as part of a larger investigation but insisted that their involvement had been only technical, with the Israeli banks clearing the checks in question rather than cashing them.

They noted that the focus of the investigation was not on the Israeli banks but on a number of other banks including the French branch of Barclays, Societe Generale SA, France's third-largest bank, BRED, part of the Banques Populaires group, and Societe Marseillaise de Credit, owned by the UK's HSBC.

Leumi last month saw the manager of its Swiss operations removed by the banking regulator for violating money-laundering laws by accepting assets from Peruvian spy chief, Vladimiro Montesinos.

The increased spotlight that Israeli banks have received recently due to money laundering allegations is unlikely to speed up Israel's removal from the Financial Action Task Force black list in February 2002. Expectations of coming off the black list have also been dampened by the replacement of anti-money laundering head Lior Horev by Yehuda Schaeffer last month when Horev fell out with the Justice Ministry over the slow pace of implementation of the unit, which is not yet fully operational.

In addition to Israel, the FATF blacklist includes the Cook Islands, Dominica, Egypt, Guatemala, Hungary, Indonesia, Lebanon, Marshall Islands, Myanmar, Nauru, Nigeria, Niue, the Philippines, Russia, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

A famous man once declared that the establishment of a Zionist state in the Middle East would not provide a true homeland for the world's Jews, but rather would serve as "a central headquarters for their international world swindle .. . . a haven for convicted scoundrels and a university for budding crooks."

Dear VNN,

I have some concerns about "Some Traitors Are Ok, Some Are Not" by J.R. Colson. In effect Colson argues that John Walker (Lindh?) could very well spark a groundswell of anti-Israelism; hence, the passionate demand for his execution by typically "mild-mannered" under-Jew-thumb columnists, on both the left and the right.

While I appreciate Mr. Colson's hope, and certainly wish that were true, I don't think it is. I do not profess to be an expert on this case, so I may be mistaken. I'll sketch my general concerns and leave it to Mr. Colson or other VNN readers to correct me.

Knowing the Jewish power on the left, when I first learned of the situation between Israeli Jews and Palestinian Arabs I thought, "Wow! This should really drive a wedge in the left." While the left in principle ought to damn Israel's no-holds-barred oppression of the Palestinian underdogs, the powerful Jewish leaders--who really care only for Jews, not for underdogs per se--could never go along with that. While they are comfortable hating America when it opposes communism or some other Jew-spawned ideological monstrosity, they love America when it's cleansing the Middle East of non-Jews, or otherwise serving Jew purposes. And to a degree the wedge has been driven. Unfortunately, Jewish power is so strong that the dissenting left can barely get an anti-Israel/anti-war word in edgewise. The most publicity they have gotten, ironically enough, is from traitorous "neo-conservative" Jews (and the neo-conservative gentile lackeys they fund) bashing their "anti-Americanism."

From what I understand, Walker, like most of the oppositional left today, was never so much anti-Israel as he was anti-American. He read The Autobiography of Malcolm X and sympathized with the plight of the black man in an evil white world. As VNN reported a week or two ago, Walker was a wigger. As he grew more interested in Malcom X's brand of anti-American Islam, he even assumed a black identity and posted anti-White-American messages on black websites to the effect of "white racism is evil and omnipresent."

This anti-white, anti-western, anti-traditional America is what I fear is at the heart of both Walker and today's oppositional left. They are far less concerned with damning Israel and exposing its horrendously hypocritical crimes against humanity than with seeing it as an extension of Western American imperialism. Though I can't be certain, I'd bet money that those "mush-for-brains college students [taking] up Walker's cause, and writing uncritical essays about him, and even reading those essays aloud in a classroom" are slamming American imperialism (which is quickly identified with traditional White westernism) far more than they are outlining Israel and the Jew's history of political, self-righteous tyranny. No doubt, the gist of those essays is that the White man--not the Jews (who in these situations quickly become "white")--is oppressing Arabs. No doubt, they fall more in line with the motto Harvard's Race Traitor Magazine, "Treason to Whiteness is loyalty to humanity," than with VNN's "No Jews. Just Right."

For these reasons, I find it difficult to see in Walker a hero. While I support resistance to Israel and the cessation of American support of Israel (not to mention the cessation of Israel itself!), I do not support Malcolm X wanna-be wiggers. And I certainly do not champion them as true rebels for the cause.

The main propaganda point we should make is the imbalance in treatment of his "treason" vs. Pollard's by the chatterers, particularly the neocon gentiles. Caloric restriction in rodents is well known to retard the rate of aging, increase mean and maximum life-spans, and inhibit the occurrence of many age- associated diseases. However, little is known about the influence of short-term repeated fasting on longevity. In this study, female (NZB x NZW)F1 mice were used to test the physiological effect of short- term repeated fasting (4 consecutive days, every 2 weeks). The results showed that fasting mice survived significantly longer than the full-fed mice, in spite of the fasting group having a heavier body weight than the control group. Mean survival times for fasting and control mice were 64.0+/-15.3 and 47.9+/-9.4 weeks, respectively. Short-term repeated fasting manipulation was also effective on the prolongation of life-span in autoimmune-prone mice.

In organisms studied to date (yeast, nematodes, fruit flies, mice and rats), CR increased both mean and maximum life span, as well as significantly reducing signs of disease. In all species examined, the extended longevity and health of the animals was accompanied by changes in the regulation of energy metabolism. Recent research has determined that genetic manipulation of glucose availability, metabolism, and signaling pathways can mimic the longevity-extending effects of CR in the yeast model. This discovery makes the yeast model of aging and longevity a powerful tool for uncovering the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for increased longevity and health span, with a view to developing effective interventions.

CR Increases Neurotrophic Factor Production in the Brain and Protects Neurons. Beyond extending life span, CR also reduces development of age-related cancers, immune and neuroendocrine alterations, and motor dysfunction in rodents. Recent animal model studies of neurodegenerative disorders provide the first evidence that CR can also increase resistance of neurons to age-related and disease-specific stresses. One possible mechanism is that the mild metabolic stress associated with CR induces cells to produce proteins that increase cellular resistance to disease processes. Indeed, CR increases production of one such protein, a neuronal survival factor, BDNF. BDNF signaling in turn plays a central role in the neuroprotective effect of CR. This work suggests that CR may be an effective approach for reducing neuronal damage and neurodegenerative disorders in aging, providing insight into the design of approaches that might mimic CR's beneficial consequences.

Use of Gene Expression Microarrays in Aging Research. Aging is normally accompanied by changes in expression, or activity, of a large number of genes, but it is not clear which of these changes are critical in the aging process. Gene expression microarrays, which allow profiling the activity of many thousands of genes at once, provide an opportunity to obtain a more complete picture of what these changes are, and to design tests of whether these changes are causally associated with aging. In three recent studies, investigators looked at differences in gene expression patterns in young and old mouse skeletal muscle, liver, and brain tissue and also made several observations on changes brought about by caloric restriction. Though the data analyses are complex, some initial observations are:

1) aging results in lower levels of activity of metabolic and biosynthetic genes;

2) aging is accompanied by patternsof gene expression that are indicative of stress responses, including inflammatory and oxidative stress;

3) many, but not all, age-related changes in gene expression in mouse liver and skeletal muscle are slowed by caloric restriction; and

4) caloric restriction appears to increase expression of genes for repairing and/or preventing damage to cellular macromolecules.

Microarray technology is proving to be an efficient approach to answering long-standing important questions about molecular mechanisms of aging and how these may be manipulated, for example, by calorie restriction.Profiling changes in gene activity may eventually provide useful biomarkers of the aging process itself, markers that might be important in assessing the effectiveness of strategies to retard aging-related processes.

HUMAN RESEARCH THAT MAY REPLICATE CALORIC RESTRICTION- INDUCED LIFE EXTENSION OBSERVED IN LABORATORY ANIMALS

While glancing through Prevention magazine [1] during breakfast today I came across a brief article on the Okinawa Centenarian Study. [2] It seems that residents of the Japanese island of Okinawa have been verified as among the healthiest and longest living humans on earth. [3] Researchers apparently believe that their secret is eating less, a practice called "hara hachi bu."

"Hara hachi bu" (ha-ra ha-chee BOO) means "stop eating when you are 80% full." Prevention states that as a result, Okinawan's eat 10 to 40% fewer calories than Americans. That's exactly inthe range of caloric restriction that has been shown to extend the maximum life span of laboratory animals. Prevention cites the following data from the Okinawa Centenarian Study presented at the American Geriatrics Society annual meeting, 2001:

"Compared with Americans, Okinawan elders

* are 75% more likely to stay mentally sharp into old age

* get 80% less breast and prostate cancers

* get 50% less ovarian and colon cancers

* have 50% fewer hip fractures

* have 80% fewer heart attacks

* have cholesterol levels comparable to Boston Marathoners"

Regarding benefits other than life extension, the new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences I recently pointed readers to notes that in addition to extending the life span of mammals, caloric restriction "is also the most effective means known of reducing cancer incidence and increasing the mean age of onset of age-related diseases and tumors." [4]

In only three weeks of CR I've lost nine pounds of unwanted fat mass! I'll be able to fit into the pants I recently retired, and I'll have to since my current pants keep falling too low without as much fat mass to hang on to. Immediate effects observed are an increase in energy and longer lasting cognitive awareness, which is to say I don't get as mentally tired late in the day. The first week was difficult, as my body kept crying out for its normal level of intake, but since then it's been easy. In fact, I'm less hungry than ever before -- a pleasant surprise!

While I'm eating about 40 to 50% less, I'm eating healthier than ever. Zero junk, all vegetables, whole grains, and vegie juices. As a vegetarian avoiding soy I've sold out for eggs (egg-whites only), but maintain ethical principles by using only eggs from cage-free chickens (health-food stores often carry such eggs). One might think you'd go crazy with such zero-junk restrictions plus CR, but I'm actually enjoying my smaller meals more than I used to enjoy larger meals, they even taste better. Makes sense too, since your body is all the more happy to consume that food. Another benefit is the extra money that's staying in my pocket!

The low-calorie nutrient-dense diet consumed for 2 yr by the eight persons sealed inside the closed ecological space known as Biosphere 2, near Tucson, AZ, constituted a unique "experiment of nature," amounting to the first well-monitored application of a nutritional regimen proven in animals to substantially inhibit and delay time of onset of most age-related diseases, induce physiological changes characteristic of a functionally "younger" age, and extend both average and maximum lifespans. Over the 2 yr the eight persons demonstrated a substantial weight loss, remarkable fall in blood cholesterol, blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, and low white blood cell counts--exactly as seen in rodents on such a regimen. Studies in progress involving levels of cortisol, insulin, and glycosylated hemoglobin support the rodent similarity. Further studies will seek to determine whether additional among the large battery of physiologic changes induced in animals by caloric restriction are also induced in humans on a similar nutrient-dense, calorie-limited diet. Such evidence will pertain to the question whether the increased disease resistance and aging retardation shown by calorie-restricted rodents might also be expected to occur in humans.

It is indeed a good film.

Just as I had expected, the audience was nearly white.

The only thing I didnt like was the Jewish-looking Frodo. All the hobbits look like normal folk, but not Frodo. While most of the characters are blue-eyed, blond or brown haired, Frodo is the only one (by facial characters, and his wimpy behavior) who resembles the guy from the nearest synagogue. Jews still managed to make this film a sour experience for me. I have nothing against Saruman having Semite qualities, as he is an antagonist character, but I have everything against a Jewish main hero. Anyone know how much Jewish blood this brat contains?
