I see Edgar Steele is pleading mea culpa to everyone he suckered into speculating in gold and, far worse, silver. The smallest loss is in gold, which is “only” down 25% from top to current. And on that stick around. The leveraged hedge funds have only liquidated half of what they intend to dump.

And not having listened to himself (buy for cash and take physical delivery), Steele now confesses to having bought mining stocks, on margin. That should have been good for at least 80% losses. He only says “destroyed”.

As for Mary Schapiro, let’s be cautious about not being too hasty in speculation. I see nothing in her photo, or her education, or her background that says “Jewish”. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean very much. Many Jews, especially those that are part-Jews, are not easily recognizable. Her mother (at least) may very likely have been a gentile. I note that her biographical material is curiously sparse on personal details. I’d certainly like to know her maiden name.

However, I do note that Shapiro is her married name (husband is a lawyer). Therefore, it seems quite likely that she could be (like Christina Romer) an “honorary Jew” by virtue of marriage. In the absence of more specific information, I’d go with that.

I’m not sure what you’re talking about, gw. Mary Schapiro looks extremely Jewish. It’s pretty obvious. And just because she’s married doesn’t mean that “Schapiro” is her husband’s name. It could very well could be her own name. There are lots of professional women don’t take their husbands’ last names after they’re married. That’s a pretty common thing.
