Western Wall rabbi says pope should not wear cross at site

Ahead of Pope Benedict XVI’s May visit to Israel, the rabbi of the Western Wall, Shmuel Rabinovitch, has said that it is not proper to come to the site wearing a cross.

The pope wears a cross in all public appearances and is slated to visit the Western Wall on May 12 after a meeting with Muslim religious leaders at the Dome of the Rock.

After the visit, which will include a meeting with Rabinovitch, the pope is slated to meet with Israel’s two chief rabbis, Yona Metzger and Shlomo Amar.

“My position is that it is not fitting to enter the Western Wall area with religious symbols, including a cross,” said Rabinovitch in a telephone interview with The Jerusalem Post Monday. “I feel the same way about a Jew putting on a tallit and phylacteries and going into a church.”

Rabinovitch is responsible for religious decorum at the site.

“In coming days I intend to discuss the issue with the pope’s people,” Wadie Abunassar, media coordinator for the pope’s visit to the Holy Land, said in response to reports that the pontiff would not remove his cross. “I cannot imagine the Holy Father removing his cross.”

On a historic visit to the Holy Land in 2000, Pope John Paul II prayed at the Western Wall, stuffing a written prayer between the cracks. Pictures from the visit clearly show him wearing a golden cross while praying.

Despite this precedent, Rabinovitch maintains his position against the display of religious symbols. In recent years there have been at least two incidents in which Rabinovitch has barred access to the Western Wall by Christian clergy wearing crosses.

In November 2007, he refused to allow a group of Austrian bishops led by the Archbishop of Vienna, Christoph Schonborn, access to the site after the clergymen refused to remove or hide their crosses.

At the time Rabinovitch told the Post that “crosses are a symbol that hurt Jewish feelings.”

In May 2008, a group of Irish prelates from both Catholic and Protestant churches were prevented from visiting the Western Wall for the same reason.

Rabinovitch also opposes security arrangements that would prevent worshipers from reaching the Kotel for several hours before and during the pope’s visit.

“Police and Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) authorities met with me and presented certain demands for security during the visit that include closing the Western Wall to people who want to pray,” said Rabinovitch.

“For the past 42 years, no one has ever been prevented from praying at the Western Wall and, God willing, no one ever will. A solution needs to be reached that provides adequate security for the pope without infringing on the right of everyone to pray. The Western Wall belongs to everyone.”

A senior Catholic church official said in response that the security arrangements for the pope were an internal Israeli affair that had nothing to do with the Church.

Before 1967, when the Western Wall was under Jordanian rule, Jews were forbidden to pray there. In the Six Day War, Israel conquered east Jerusalem, including the Western Wall, from Jordan and prayer was opened to all religions.

Interesting thought. Yes, and it successfully subverted Rome and eventually took over, replacing the gods with saints and the emperors with popes.

About Bogota, I could write a book! What an education. It is an immense sooty, grimy, ugly, polluted, chaotic Third World city, the size of New York. It is the only city in the world of its size without a public transportation system. The result of that is unbelievable traffic and chaos.

It provides a scary preview of what is to come for North America in another century or two, if current trands continue. There are isloated pockets of great wealth, where the few rich and priviledged whites live behind walls, electronic gates, and private guards, surrounded by a sea of crime and filth, where the tri-racial masses live, including the poor whites who have been forced down into this miscegenated squalor. I also noticed that massive dogs are very popular there among the rich.

I noticed too that the mansions of the rich (in fact all but one that I saw) heavily favor the English Tudor style. Mullioned windows, lots of brick, ivy -covered walls, lush lawns, all behind high iron fences and with a guard house at the entrance. Inside that protected little sanctum they can pretend that they are in a little bit of England, there in South America under the equator, with the multi-racial millions around them.

I couldn’t help think that if a Haitian-style revolution ever comes to South America, it would be a bloodbath on a continental scale. A nightmare. Thus far, the whites are still very much in control, and unchallenged. Their culture, language, religion, law prevail without Jew-instilled Protestant guilt. They are not apologetic or ashamed of their absolute hegemony, unlike North America, and they are not given to appeasement of the non-whites. European culture and standards rule; there is no pretense otherwise.

The ritzy North Side of Bogota, has elegant hotels, restaurants, shops, very comparable to Manhattan’s wealthy East Side. I couldn’t help notice the similarity between them. In both, it is an all white world, a prosperous world where you see no beggars or blacks. Bugt unlike New York (yet) is it guarded by uniformed troops (not mere police!) with rifles and machine guns, who look like they mean business. You can walk there unmolested and without fear (which you are advised not to do elsewhere).

You are told by everyone you meet, first thing, where if is safe to walk and where it isn’t, which neighborhoods are good and which aren’t. Certain areas of the city have been “cleared” of crime (by military presence). It reminds me of a city after a snowstorm. Certain streets and neighborhoods – where the important people live – have been cleared of snow, and there you can walk or drive without difficulty, while other streets have not been plowed yet and you are advised to remain inside until they are.

Quite an experience. And as I said, it’s an ominous look at the future. Actually, it reminded me very much of the movie “Idiocracy” (do check it out on Youtube) … a vast sprawl of ugliness, squalor, grime and pollution as far as you can see. That’s what Bogota looks like (outside of the North End). If you’re a millionaire, life can be quite luxurious … but risky. Who wants to live that way? If you’re a poor white, God help you.

Incidentally, they know nothing about Jews there. So they think! They think Jews are irrelevant to their lives. But their TV carries endless programs imported (dubbed) from Hollywood, and the jewspapers and magazines carry syndicated colums from the US written under local names like Roberto Garcia or Carlita Gomez. The hotel I stayed in, as I found out, belongs to a South American chain that is owned by the Sheraton group, which is part of the Starwood group, owned by Barry Sternlicht. Little do those employees (or guests) realize that they are working for a billionaire Jew in Connecticut!

I’m confused by the phrase “Jew-instilled Protestant guilt”, if you feel like elucidating a bit.

Is there something inherent in Protestantism that makes Protestants more susceptible to guilt than Catholics? As a child and teenager, I definitely noticed that the few Catholic kids and teenagers I knew seemed much less troubled by any sort of guilty feelings than did my Protestant peers. (I attributed this to Catholics’ confessing every week). On the other hand, as I grew older, I met Catholics who TALKED about Catholic guilt, making jokes about having attended the “School of Our Lady of Perpetual Guilt” and so forth.

Or are Protestants and Catholics equally susceptible to guilt, but the places like the U.S. where Jews had their greatest play, happened to be Protestant?

Sorry, gw, but it kind of bothers me that a tiny, arrogant ruling elite, whether they be White, Jew, Chink, Mulatto or whatever, should possess all the wealth of a country and keep everyone else impoverished and exploited like they do in Latin America. That’s not how Whites are supposed to behave, ie, exploiting and oppressing others. I wonder just how “White” a lot of the White ruling elite in those countries really are…..some of them look kind of dark or mestizo to me.

Besides, why would any civilized White want to live in a society where you’d have to have private security forces armed with machine guns patrolling the barbed-wire barricades around your compound 24 hours a day, a society where your daughter has to be driven to school in an armor-plated limo out of fear she’ll be kidnapped by rebels or drug lords? May the Gods forbid we should ever live in a place like that, a country where you are either a member of the aristocracy, the clergy, a soldier, a farmer or a peasant……… No thanks.
