New York – Manhattan prosecutors say a real estate attorney has pleaded guilty to stealing $2.1 million from clients to pay his personal expenses and run his law office.

Sixty-six-year-old Mount Kisco resident Ira Berman pleaded guilty Thursday to grand larceny in exchange for a sentence of three to nine years in prison. He also agreed to sign a document acknowledging he still owes victims the money.

Prosecutors say the funds Berman stole were real estate down payments deposited into the escrow account of his Manhattan firm.

Prosecutors learned of the case last fall when a seller complained that a down payment was missing. Since then, at least eight people have filed complaints claiming they were missing money. [AP]

$2.1 million dollar theft and he only gets 3 years. A blue collar worker would a lot more for stealing a few hundred dollars, or for robbing a hamberger stand using a firearm. There’s one rule of law for the bourgeois and a different one for the proletariat.
