I used to work for a (privately-owned) environmental remediation contractor that was involved with the Katrina cleanup. My good friend and colleague was in charge of health and safety for the effort and gave me the scoop.

First of all, the company was ‘too big’ (~$150 million) to be allowed to bid on the work under current ‘small-business’ or ‘affirmative-action’ rules (but too small to compete with Halliburton, Bechtel, Fluor, URS, etc), so we had to team up with a certified “8A” (minority) contractor to be able to do any work. Fair enough – it had the potential for $250 million, so we bit the bullet.

Of course upon arrival there was absolutely nothing – fuel, building materials, etc, since the Feds had prevented private business from bringing in anything. But immediately, the local government officials began soliciting, er, contributions. At first it was couched as requests for “donations” – help the parish high school to put on a prom, etc – but later developed into direct demands for unvarnished graft. We persevered, the reward was too great to pass up…

Except it wasn’t. Invoice after invoice went unpaid due to Federal incompetence and red tape. So, after 5 months, and millions of our own money spent, we left.

Whose the Bigger Bigot?

When America went to war against the Germans it was ok to hate Germans. When America went to war against the Japanese it was ok to hate Japs. When Americans fought the Indians we said “the only good Indian is a dead Indian”. George Patton used to say he didn’t want to just kill Germans, but he wanted to “murder them”.

Just about every race or country on earth has hated another country or race at one time or the other, but somehow that’s never bigotry. If I say I don’t trust Jews because of my experience with Jews I am called a bigot. In my opinion Jews are the biggest bigots on the planet, but I’m a bigot for saying that even though there is more evidence of their bigotry against everyone else on the earth for thousands of years. I’m not sure I get this logic.

The Jewish National Fund’s blue collection boxes have long been a familiar sight in diaspora schools, workplaces, shops and homes – a chance for ordinary Jews to contribute their private cash to the Zionist dream.

These “pennies from the pushka” were used from 1901 onwards to purchase land for Jewish settlements in the Turkish and later British territory of Palestine, stepping-stones towards the creation of a Jewish state.

Yet sixty years after the birth of the state of Israel the JNF continues to thrive – and to generate controversy.

Last month Israel’s parliament overwhelmingly endorsed the first stage of a bill which would formally allow the JNF to continue its established practice of barring non-Jews from leasing land and housing held in its name – 13 per cent of the area of Israel, much of it now prime real estate.

South Florida Students Face Indictment for Carrying Explosives Across State Lines

WASHINGTON —  Two Egyptian students at the University of South Florida were indicted Friday for carrying explosive materials across states lines and one of them was charged with teaching the other how to use them for violent reasons.

Ahmed Abdellatif Sherif Mohamed, 24, an engineering graduate student and teaching assistant at the Tampa-based university, faces terrorism charges for teaching and demonstrating how to use the explosives.

He and Youssef Samir Megahed, 21, an engineering student, were stopped for speeding Aug. 4 in Goose Creek, S.C., where they have been held on state charges.

The two men were stopped with pipe bombs in their car near a Navy base in South Carolina where enemy combatants have been held. They were held on state charges while the FBI continued to investigate whether there was a terrorism link.
