MEDIA REALITY IN PALESTINE

Luyendijk spent some time in Israel/Palestine, or “the Holy Land,” as he cautiously calls it. The circumstances here, as he describes, are extremely different. If the main problem in the Arab world was a lack of information, due mainly to a lack of democratic freedom and to authoritative regimes, basically turning the reporter’s professional life into hell, Israel was a journalistic heaven. Luyendijk describes an overwhelming, perfectly oiled propaganda machine, super-professionally run by the Israeli government and army. The reporter is spoiled by an endless stream of information, perfectly tuned to his needs. The Israelis spoil their guests with exhaustive lists of eloquent speakers, from academic talking heads to common people, ready to say in any of some 40 different languages those precious sound bites that television loves so much. You need a Dutch-speaking West Bank settler who lost a spouse in a terror attack? No problem, here are several phone numbers, here are the quotes, here’s an expert’s view, here’s some recent footage. The foreign reporter can just sit back in his armchair, and the Israeli PR machine will do his work better than he could ever dream of.

Professor Steven E. Jones, the Brigham Young University physics professor, is retiring Jan. 1, 2007

“I am electing to retire so that I can spend more time speaking and conducting research of my choosing,” Jones said in an interview Friday. “I appreciate the wonderful opportunity I have had to teach and serve and do research at BYU for more than 21 years.”

In September, the university owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints placed Jones on paid leave in order to conduct a professional review of his controversial Sept. 11 theories.

The review was in its earliest stages – a panel had not yet been appointed – but it has been canceled due to Jones’ retirement, said Carri Jenkins, BYU spokeswoman.

Bollyn comments: This is the review that could not be done. I was eagerly awaiting this review. Because I know they could not disprove what Professor Jones has proven. Therefore, this was the review that could not be done.

I wish Professor Jones had stuck to his guns and demanded a professional review. The professors of political correctness should put up or shut up. They could not and will not. Professor Jones’ resignation has let them off the hook.

The cowards have won this one.

That is a crying shame.

Here is the letter of Professor Jones:

I stand firmly against the war in Iraq and any war of aggression.

I support scientific scrutiny of the events of Sept. 11, 2001 a day which will live in infamy. I speak as a private citizen of the United States.

“In a democracy we can renounce war and proclaim peace. There is opportunity for dissent. Many have been speaking out and doing so emphatically. That is their privilege. That is their right, so long as they do so legally . . . We can give our opinions on the merits of the situation as we see it.” (President Gordon B. Hinckley, LDS General Conference, April 6,2003.)

Wholeheartedly agreeing, I am exercising that right and that privilege. “A team of American and Iraqi public health researchers has estimated that 600,000 civilians have died in violence across Iraq since the 2003 American invasion.” (New York Times, 11 Oct. 11. 2006) I renounce these killings in the Middle Eastern wars.

We must insist on complete answers to questions about what really happened on Sept. 11, why there were no air defenses that day, and why we have gone to war in the Middle East. These issues transcend party politics. These yearnings for understanding of 9/11 and the wars that followed take us to the core of our heritage as Americans — I support the Constitution of the United States. I am very concerned about those elected officials who would engage in pre-emptive war rather than “common defense” to “repel invasions” (Article I), compromise our rights against torture and cruel punishments (Eighth Amendment), take away the right of habeas corpus (Article I), and diminish the freedom to speak out without fear of reprisals (1st Amendment).

Two structural engineering professors in Switzerland have recently spoken out as I have also done, declaring that explosives were with “utmost probability” responsible for the collapse of World Trade Center 7 on Sept. 11. “WTC7 was with the utmost probability brought down by explosives”, said one. ‘Tages-Anzeiger, 9/9/2006″

After seeing the collapse of World Trade Center 7 (see wtc7.net), many instinctively want to know why this 47-story skyscraper, which was never hit by a plane, collapsed completely seven hours after the WTC Towers had collapsed. How could this happen? The 9/11 Commission report fails to mention the collapse of WTC7. Federal laboratories have not officially answered yet. FEMA explains how fire might initiate a collapse, then admits, “Our best hypothesis has only a low probability of occurrence.” Is it a crime, then, to consider an alternative hypothesis, that explosives were used?

The paper therein by Joseph Firmage explores evidences that US intelligence knew in advance that the hijackers were coming and that the attacks were “allowed to happen,” to justify wars in the Middle East. At least ten nations are on record as having warned the current administration that terrorist attacks were imminent, shortly before 9/11.

If another “9/11-like event” is “allowed to happen” in the near future, do you not suppose that it will be blamed this time on Iran or Syria, followed by a swift and deadly attack on the country blamed? Can you not imagine that a military draft will follow next, with college students constrained to enter the military, and handed rifles to go and kill people in the Middle East, by the tens of thousands?

Because of my concern for college-age students I have taught and loved for decades, I am motivated to speak out emphatically against what I judge – after thorough study and reflection – to be terrible wars, wars of aggression, founded on deceptions.

Tonge condemned for Israel remark

Ms Tonge stepped down as an MP at the last election
Lib Dem peer Jenny Tonge has been summoned for talks with her leader after saying her party was “probably in the grip” of the pro-Israel lobby.

Ms Tonge said: “The pro-Israeli lobby has got its grips on the western world, its financial grips. I think they’ve probably got a grip on our party.”

The peer, who has been sacked before for comments on suicide bombers, was speaking at a conference fringe event.

Senior Lib Dem officials said they were “deeply disturbed” by the remarks.

Norman Lamb, chief of staff to the Lib Dem leaders, said: “We will be seeking a meeting between Jenny, Ming Campbell and Tom McNally, our leader in the Lords, at the earliest opportunity to seek an explanation.”

‘Despicable’

Ms Tonge’s outburst comes despite the conference overwhelmingly passing a motion on Wednesday condemning the Israeli military action in Lebanon as “disproportionate”.

And it comes after a group of MPs warned this month that anti-Semitism was on the rise.

Jon Benjamin, Chief Executive of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, said the remarks were of exactly the kind of problem identified by the MPs’ report.

“At a time when anti-Semitism is on the increase everyone should be working to develop communal harmony, I find it despicable that she believed it was appropriate to make comments such as these at a major political conference,” he said.

Repeating controversy

Ms Tonge was sacked from the Lib Dem front bench in January 2004 after saying she would consider becoming a suicide bomber if she was a Palestinian.

She insisted she was not condoning suicide attacks. Since then she has retired as an MP but entered the House of Lords.

At a conference fringe meeting, she said she stuck by her original remarks.

“I said, and I would repeat it now: if I had had to live through that as a Palestinian over decades and I was being given no hope for the future whatsoever I might have considered being a suicide bomber,” she said.

“I condemn terrorism, whether it comes from bomber pilots dropping bombs on Iraq or Afghanistan or Lebanon or whether it’s a suicide bomber.

“The suicide bomber is prepared to give his life, the bomber pilot goes home for a beer in the bar afterwards. That is the only difference.”

Gavin Stollar, a spokesman for the Liberal Democrat Friends of Israel, said: “Jenny Tonge’s original support for suicide bombers in Israel got her sacked from the front bench.

“I think her vulgar repetition and rhetoric means that her position within the party needs to be seriously reviewed.”

And Karen Pollock, chief executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said: “Jenny Tonge’s remarks are based around one of the oldest discredited myths about Jewish people and serve to plant the seeds of racism for others to harvest in justifying acts of anti-Semitism.”

The National Hockey League (NHL) season has reached the quarter pole, and already there are rumblings of an attendance crisis. Some teams are reporting attendance figures as low as 8,000 for games in state-of-the-art arenas that seat capacity crowds of more than 20,000. Chicago, Long Island, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Colorado, and Phoenix have all seen precipitous declines in attendance- some as low as 22% below last season’s figures.

Where Are the “Deniers?”

We hear about “Holocaust deniers” about once a week – usually from a Jew or a Jewish group.

But here’s the problem: we’ve never encountered any actual Holocaust “deniers.” Ever.

Sure, we’ve met people who question some features about the Holocaust – for example, we’ve met people who say “no, 6 million Jews didn’t die in the Holocaust, only 4 million Jews died.” But we’ve never met anyone who said “no, the Holocaust never even happened. There were no Nazi-built concentration camps, and there were no Jews, or others, put into those camps.”

[By the way, when we say “Holocaust,” we don’t mean the first holocaust of the 20th century, which Jews largely committed [1]. We mean instead the second holocaust of the 20th century, which was largely a response to the first one].

So, here’s our question: where are all these “Holocaust deniers?”

The federal government’s response to illegal immigration in Arizona — the virtual gateway into the United States for illegal aliens — is to man the Phoenix ICE office with about 60 agents, roughly the same number found in the agency’s Honolulu or Denver bureaus.

In addition to the chronic understaffing, the Phoenix ICE office has never had a stable rudder.

In 2004, its first special agent in charge shot himself in the head while driving on Interstate 10 to a press conference. More on that later.

Since then, ICE hasn’t been able to keep a chief in the Phoenix hot seat for very long.
